New Square game surfaces: Sigma Harmonics DS photo

In line with their usual trend of making enough games to choke a small horse, Square has a new DS game in the works. Famitsu has published some scans from Sigma Harmonics, which will be released in Japan this summer. There are no details about an American release, but it's safe to say Square wants our money too, so we will likely get it stateside. More on that as soon as more details come to light, ladies and gents.

Sigma Harmonics is an adventure RPG that has a mystery-esqe storyline, which is definitely a departure from the usual Square storylines, although it seems it still uses RPG elements in battles such as leveling up. That's cool, I like leveling up. Makes me feel weirdly accomplished.

The game is being directed by Hiroki Chiba, who was the event director for Final Fantasy VII (ooh!) and Dirge of Cerebus (ugh.) That really could go either way, but the Famitsu scans look pretty interesting so far, so I'll try not be the RPG cynic I really am. I'm pleased that the theme and look of this title are a little different (you also hold the DS sideways to play, which I've enjoyed for games like Hotel Dusk.) Now, to wait for Square to release an official statement to we can dissect it swiftly and prattle over all the details! It can't be long to wait.

You misspelled "Sqaure" in the title.

For whatever reason, I'm more excited about this than I should be based off what little information was given. I love the book-style orientation and would love to play another mystery-style game. I know all of the reading in Hotel Dusk was a turn off for many, but I loved it! The more games I can play that remind me of Hotel Dusk the better.

You mentioned "battle." Any world on how combat will work on a sideways DS? I hope it's touchscreen-only; using the buttons on a sideways DS can get awkward.

That's more like it, SE. Put FF to bed for a while, create more stuff like this and I'll happily invest.

RPG cynic? Collette, you go crazy over every Atlus/FF announcement. =p

i really like the concept of this game, and I'll be keeping an eye on it as previews come in. As long as the combat isn't half-assed, I may get it.

Who the hell keeps feeding horses video games? Someone should come out with PSA "videogames are not a substitute for food in a horse's diet and could be harmful to their health."

There, problem solved.

I think I find that man/woman with the glasses slightly more attractive than most of their men/women.

I'm a huge fan of mystery/detective movies, and a Square RPG version for the DS seems awesome. Granted, I'm in college and have no time for one, but I'll watch my GPA plummet again if its good enough.

Its nice to see them do stuff other than Final Fantasy for a change, but I honestly wouldn't put it past them to slap the FF name on there some how.

I don't know what it is, but Square/Enix kind of lost me with all their weirdness. Case in point, this game. Can't I just get some sweet SNES looking sprites and a cool story instead of crazy jpop kiddies?

After finishing Final Fantasy X back in the day, I looked at all the other stuff they were coming out with at the time, I scratched my head and went... huh? Whats even crazier, is that we don't even get half of their games in the states.

JRPGs have become almost like anime to me. Market saturation, big time. You have to weed your way through 75% crap to get to the good stuff. Even then, guys like me just kind of give up after awhile because I have other things to play.

Where is my true Seiken Densetsu sequel at? Or how about Vagrant Story motherf*#$ers?

Demtor: I feel you. I miss the days of old, too. But for me, I want more old-school turn-based JRPGs, like Dragon Quest and early FF. There's such a market saturation of action RPGs and strategy RPGs that it's like the turn-based ones are dying out, and those are the ones I enjoy most.

I love Hotel Dusk ( just started 2 weeks back, but FF:Revenant Wings is hogging my DS at the moment ), its also a handy way to use the DS, I think its easier to hold it sideways :-)

I miss the days when Square was courageous enough to produce titles like Einhander and even had the gall to release it over here.

Yeah, I like the look of this RPG, the character designs look sweet. Only the male's clothing looks quite like he is a pyjama warrior.
