New Splinter Cell: Conviction scans; Ubisoft devs crap on the PS3 [Update] photo

Sam's gone emo. He's also kicking ass in broad daylight and fighting crime by hurling the entire Ikea catalog at the bad guys. A Finnish gaming magazine scored an exclusive look at Splinter Cell: Conviction, noting new gameplay along with some dispariging remarks about the game's unlikely apperance on the PSTriple:

- No more sneaking around in the shadows. Apparently you're going to be more like James Bond and infiltrate buildings in plain daylight. You won't have to use force or sneak around as long as you don't act suspiciously.

- According to the article, every single object that is rendered on screen has physical properties and most of them can be used by Sam. For example, Sam can pick up furniture and use it as a weapon, or throw printers at enemies or papers in the face of enemies to gain the upperhand in fights.

- Melee fights are much more than "press this button to hit" this time around. There's different context sensitive attack buttons and as mentioned before lots of environmental interaction.

- Ubisoft developers stated that being exclusive to the 360 allows them to do much more than if they were multiplatform, but they also state they doubt they would be able to achieve what they're doing with the game on the 360 on the ps3 even if it was ps3 exclusive.

- Ubi also claims the AI is really good and the magazine says the AI for example makes cover out of chairs and tables.

Ouch. There must be something lost in translation there. We all know that the PS3 has a notch more under the hood than the 360, so perhaps they are speaking about workflow or not having much portability if they were coding for the Cell? We're not sure. My Finnish is a little rusty. Six mouthwatering screenshots after the jump

[Update: Higher res images loaded, and this PS3 forum thread suggests that the translation may be misleading. We hope to hear an official statement from Ubi.]

Is that even supposed to be Sam Fischer? Or are they going to keep the series "fresh" with new characters?

OH BOY.. this is normal of these exclusive game shit talk that then is later clarified...

of course the game in it's current state won't work on ps3 they would have to rework it.. same goes on any other system...

Ubi is the new EA, make a great franchise then milk it for all it's worth with a new installment every year and run it into the ground.

"they doubt they would be able to achieve what they're doing with the game on the 360 on the ps3 even if it was ps3 exclusive."

I remember reading that the AI on the 360 can do more than the AI on the PS3. If that's true, I'm sure it has something to do with floating-point VS general-purpose processing, but what is it?

I really like the look of it, although Sam Fisher looks like a cousin to the new GTA guy now. I can't wait to get to try this out.

The PS3 may have more processing power, but MS is known for offering the best API's out there. They make the programming for their platform easy, I have not heard the same about Sony. I don't really believe that the PS3 is any better than the 360 in terms or what it can do (or vice versa), I just think it comes down to who offers the better API, and MS cleary offers that.

@blindside

Why? How do you know? Do we have proof of Sam Fisher dancing down the street?

Also, less like James Bond, IMO. James is more suave AND he shaves.

I gave up on SC games after Pandora Tomorrow got boring. The multiplayer was fun, but single player was meh.

Oh my, that looks superb. Question though....why does he look like MGS3 snake from far away, and Emo-Parker up close?....

On the topic of 360 vs. PS3 mudslinging,

Having more under the hood isn't always an indicztion of greater power, or game quality, hmm? (Saturn vs. PSX) These are consoles, not computers, and judging stat for stat simply doesn't work in this race.

Remember how the PS2 smashed the Xbox in terms of fill rate? (MGS2 rain scene on PS2 vs. Xbox?)

I only ever played the first Splinter Cell and it was pretty good, but I didn't care to try the others...it is jus tlike RainbowSix in my mind...you play the one, the rest are just more like more levels and I didn't care to do that with those 2 games.

Sure the PS3 has more raw number crunching power but I heard there were nightmare bottlenecks on the RAM caches and I also know programming *anything* that is multithreaded (i.e. takes max advantage of multiple cores) is a fucking namelessted and a half. I mean bitch. bitch and a half. goddamn forum filters are in my head now.

I think it's a simple matter of how many games the Ubi team has dropped on the 360 vs. that Trippple. If they can recycle any code, or use any tricks they previously used to streamline the development process, they certainly will. they haven't developed on the triple long enough to know those shortcuts or how to use everything properly. That's how I'd read something like that.
Also, this game looks shithot. I love the idea of a more savage Sam Fisher. the idea that you can use anything in the environment as a weapon evokes memories of Dead Rising. I know it won't be like that at all, but I can dream.
I find it ironic that the one time Peter Parker ISN'T emo in the movies, that's when everyone calls him emo parker. Thems the brakes I guess.

Ah the eternal pissing match continues. Being that nobody knows who will win the console race, I do see the consoles relying on first party titles to keep their companies on top. Whoever comes out on top in the end, won't necessarily be a loser if they have solid first party titles. Halo and Gears of War are already system sellers for MS, as will God of War and Ratchet be for PS3.

From a gamer standpoint, anyone who passes up a specific console will be missing out on some solid Triple A titles. Basically, you'd be fucking yourself over. =)

@Pistolaero, I couldn't agree more.

My strategy, however, is to wait for a significant price drop on the PS3, then go back and play all of those AAA titles (and hopefully grab them out of the bargain bin).

Just a wild guess, but they're probably saying that the PS3 is harder to code for. I know that the Xbox was easier to code for than the PS2, which was a combination of how the systems were designed and Sony and Microsoft's policies on how coding education was disseminated.

Sorry, I meant if you could afford all 3. If you can't, then you have a choice to make. My point is, if you CAN afford all 3, then you should own all 3.

You shouldn't belong to a console camp. The PS3 and Wii might be sucking as far as software goes, but then again, so was the 360 last year. Now, the 360 is kicking ass and I am sure PS3 and Wii will catch up soon also.

If they're going to change it fundamentally like that why don't they just make it an individual property. I'm getting fed up of seeing stuff that isn't related to rhe previous installment. Movies do it too. It's easier and cheaper to just slap on a name thats already been established rather than actually put some effort in.

Personally, I think Sam's going with more of an old sea captain look. And if they're out of that, it's the high school drama coach. And if they're out of that, the child molester. And even if they're out of that, he's still got two options: Father Christmas and the homeless man.

Or maybe even The Namelessted.

I really hope they didn't release a 600$ console with significant bottlenecks. They're specifically designed to run games, is that so hard? Is it so hard to actually talk to game designers? Drivers help tuning their vehicles, can't game makers be invited to do the same? Bah. Every time new hardware comes out, it sounds like geeky teens are trying to run BEOS on their microwave oven. Not smart pro coders working on a dedicated gaming machine.

I believe it. They didn't specify what exactly the 360 can do that they think the PS3 can't. I bet it has something to do with the awesome AI that is supposed to be in the game. The developers of Assassin's Creed already said that the AI for the 360 version will be better than the PS3 version for whatever reason, it may be the same with PS3 possibly not being able to handle the Splinter Cell AI.

or maybe that they are from the same company? 360 has been out for 2 years, they worked the kinks + seminars to teach developers how to use their system, ps3 is barely doing that, dough the reason why they haven't touched 50% of what the PS3 can really do.

Guys, shut up about the PS3 VS 360 arguments.

What's even more retarded is that the game is supposed to reward you for not using force, yet they're implementing all these new fighting moves. What the hell? Am I the only one who still evades enemies in SC games, instead of killing everybody and hiding their body? Double Agent sucked ass, and this is looking pretty bad already. I want a classic Splinter Cell!

Oh Ubisoft, you're far too modest. All you have to do is get your crack team in Shanghai to cobble together something for the PS3 and bang you're done. Who cares what the quality is like, after all you're Ubisoft! Just dump any old shit on the market since the people who buy your games really don't deserve any better do they?

I heard the ps3 is just harder to make games on due to the fact Sony doesn't really help out the dev teams on anything. I also heard it's also excruciattingly painful to put games online for the same reason. Whereas microsoft have guidelines for certain things which make creating the game a whole lot easier
