Aerox continues his streak as my favorite tipper for today by sending in a link to the above trailer. I've been following the progress of Soul Calibur: Legends for a while now, mostly as I think it's an interesting experiment in what Namco can do other than 3D fighters, but the more I see, the less I'm impressed by it.
That clip up there is footage of a gentleman named "Lloyd" hacking his way across a number of different backdrops. "Lloyd" is a character from Namco's Tales of Symphonia, and my -- and presumably your -- first impression is that "Lloyd" is a really stupid name. In a game about fighting with deadly weapons, I can fully accept a guy named "Mitsurugi," I enjoy names like "Ivy" and "Cervantes," and I'm even cool with a character named "Lizard Man," if only because it's an apt description of a man who is also a lizard. "Lloyd" however, sounds like he should be flicking a bee off the gas station hot dogs he's just set out for display, while ogling a picture of Katie Holmes' braindead ass on the cover of OK! Magazine.
Also, this entire clip brings to mind the depressing Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. Anything that reminds my ocular senses of my least favorite chapter of my favorite series of all time automatically earns scorn and a theatrical sneer towards my laptop screen.

This makes me sad...
Oh man, I already want to punch myself.
And great! That's just what we need, more games like these.
He doesn't even use the ballista, he ATTACKS IT!
Then again, I don't think Lament of Innocence is that bad, if you don't compare it to Metroidvania stuff. And I love Orochi Warriors. And I think Dragon Blade was cool from what I played. So yeah, just because every game isn't OMGTHEGREATESTNEWESTTHINGEVAR doesn't mean it's crap.
At least they figured that out.
Although if LoI is your most hated Castlevania, I'm guessing you never played Curse of Darkness or Castlevani 64. In that respect, you were wiser than I.'
(Death to Castlevania II haters though. DutyFree, I'm looking at YOU.)
The battle system is much better and so is the story. I enjoyed ToD2 a great deal, but after I beat it I never felt compelled to go back and play it again. ToS on the other hand I've played through multiple times because it's just more fun.
Anyway, the clip doesn't make the game look horrible.. the visuals aren't bad looking for the wii, but it looks like it's going to be an extremely shallow game that I'll pick up used a few months after it's release.
I think you're confused Nex. LoI has the first Belmont as the main character and CoD only has Trevor as a bonus character? Or are you saying Leon isn't a Belmont? Coz' he's certainly not as bad as that prat Juste.

That DOES look ridiculously like Lament of Innocense. I mean, you could have probably told me that this was a a recently found secret bonus character in LoI and (since it's been so long since I've played it) I'd probably believe you.
I mean, the graphics, the enemies, the gameplay, it's all the same. And I'm not one to usually rag on the Wii about graphics but COME ON, Namco! This game looks as good as a PS2 game from the beginning of its life cycle.
Also, I actually ENJOYED LoI for what it was (I only spent $10 on it) and I felt that Curse of Darkness was more of a step back for Castlevania in 3D than anything in LoI.
Oh, snap.
Woah woah woah, IGA says all the future games are non-canon now? Where the hell did that come from? I'd really like to read that interview if you could find it. I mean, I know IGA said he regretted locking himself in with the timeline, but I don't remember him lamenting anything else. It's weird if he said that recently after he just released Portrait of Ruin last year and tied it in with previous Castlevania games. Furthermore, I'm still waiting for a game that covers the events of 1999, with Julius Belmont as a main character.
Also, Leon is the first Belmont since the first Belmont was never really defined. I mean, there's the (now non-canon) Castlevania Legends with Sonia Belmont, but that game sucked horribly (and contradicted Symphony of the Night) and should never have been included in any Castlevania library to begin with.

Plus I'm not a fan of the ridiculous grind they've been putting on the games since Aria. First with the soul collecting, then with the MULTIPLE soul collecting, and now with the using subweapons a billion times, ON TOP of the drop collecting from SotN.
And don't tell me that a console 2d sequel couldn't be awesome. Look at that ninja game Vanillaware is making. I want to see something like THAT in a new 2d Castlevania. Instead we get an endless wave of recycled enemies and environments, with just enough new to make it fun.
Honestly I don't think I'll really ever be satisfied until there is a sequel that stars Alucard anyways.
