I, like probably most of you out there, gave up hope on the Sonic the Hedgehog series long ago. Let's face it: the series went down the shitter once the Dreamcast died. Plus, that teaser trailer from April didn't help matters for Sonic Unleashed, either.

After watching this above trailer, though, I feel like I'm going to cry. I'm sorry, I just thought I'd never see the day when a good Sonic game is made again.

This trailer shows off everything a good Sonic game should have: fast-paced levels, gorgeous environments, and music that sounds like what Sonic music should sound like (none of this "I want to fly high" crap ... admittedly, I like that song, but it's just not appropriate for a Sonic game). I can't believe all of this is in-game footage, too (notice all the context-sensitive buttons thrown around).

If this is what the game is really turning out to be, then you better believe I'm excited for Sonic Unleashed now. How about you?

I'll admit I don't quite have the reverance that alot of people have for this series, but I think this looks like a decent realization of the character's strengths. I kind of felt cheated by the original Sonic games, despite their detailed level design. You've got this character whose main draw is the ability to go fast and, for a majority of the game, I'm left going not so fast and just jumping around to collect rings, which will let me into a mini-game, which in turn will REALLY let me beat the game.

wha-huh?

Anyway, I think trailer shows this to be a nice mix between exploratory level design (right there around 0:40, there's a whole alternate set of rings that he'd have to back track to pickup) and flatout, speed run, this is why I'm not a plumber, roller coaster action!

But of course, everybody looks good in their trailers . . .

Jesus fucking christ! Quit bitching everyone. This is one fucking level. They're showing off bits and pieces. Don't tear apart the final product based on less than two minutes of video. What if when you don't hit the button, it takes you somewhere else like when you don't jump or don't have enough speed in the original games? Have you played it? Me either, so just shut up for a few months and let me be excited about it.

Now that I have that out of my system, I have to say I love the idea of going back to 2d and it seems that he is on a rail when the camera is behind him, which hopefully is as effective as it seems. I will give this game a chance, and if this one dissapoints, I"m going back to sonic adventure 2 to raise my chao garden while crying and using sonic 2 as a tissue.

I'm pretty sceptical about it. Looks like it might be fun, and indeed, I quite enjoyed the Adventure games (not played a 3D Sonic since) but how different are the 3D gameplay sections to that? And the 2D sections look pretty basic. So it appears to switch between Adventure and Rush style gameplay, is that really enough? At least it appears to have multiple routes in places, but at others it still looks like it's on a track.

If they stick to the side scrolling 2D but 3D looking parts this game will rock!

Looks fine. It would be great if it plays like that. I really hate like those old games forced you to stop and do some jumping like that purple water level in Sonic 2. QTE would be a great addition too since they require reaction but don't stop the gameplay.

Man, I was VERY excited when I read the title of this post... But I have to agree with most of you. I'm sure that a focus on good platforming over speed will be the secret of making Sonic good again. I think future articles about this game ought to be handled only by Mr. Sterling, because I can't stand this same kind of false hype again -- Sonic and the Secret Rings stung just too damn much.

honestly, this is still not what i want from sonic, yes it looks pretty, but the camera can't make up it's mind where to go, and it does look linear from what we get to see...still i didn't see big the cat or shadow so all's well on that front.

This game reminds me of a 3d Sonic Rush. Which isn't entirely a throwback to the old games. Albeit the Sonic Rush games are fun, and this one appears to be as well. It just doesn't seem this game is built entirely on what the old Sonic games 'Sonic' games.

People are complaning that the game is just "hold right and do QTE" but I saw multiple alternate paths and strings of rings that led off the main path that they followed. They were just doing a really fast run of the main path for the level, because that looks impressive for the trailer.

This actually looks decent to me. I'm interested in Sonic again now. Sega, dont' fail me.

I like it- it looks like a badassed version of some of the stuff from sonic adventure 1&2 on the dreamcast which were the last sonic games that I really loved (I know people rag on it but sonid adventure 2 was awesome esp. when you got to the space levels, kind of like the stuff in mario galaxy).

Well I've officially become a part of the DToid community. After reading 100+ comments on Kotaku saying "AWESOME!!!!!112", it was refreshing to find the majority of people on here noting that old-school Sonic was not all about holding down the right button.

But yeah, I agree with the dissenters: it's better than anything on the consoles recently, but it will barely be a rental if it's just Sonic Rush with prettier blurred scenery.

This looks terrible like all the other 3d sonic games. Sure the video looks jazzy but think about if you were actually trying to play that going so fast and having no clue what obstacles were coming. You would get hurt and stopped constantly notice they video avoids showing the stupid recovery sequences featured in all other 3d sonic games.

Linear path, quick time events, poorly designed levels, unimaginative enemies, and the same environments from a dozen other games = fail.

The homing attacks existed in other games they were an excuse for poor camera and control systems. They quickly grew boring and repititive.

Also the levels don't show any enemies with the ability to hurt sonic or realisticly defend themselves, later levels will certainly have these and make the ridiculous control scheme seem even worse.

Also cocks.

I actually have to agree with most people on this one. It looks pretty awesome, but it kind of gives me a "Sonic and the Secret Rings 2.0" vibe. >.>

Still, regardless of that, I haven't been this giddy over a game trailer since SSBB back in 2006. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hope that Sonic Team has finally come back to their senses.

I think most of those are not so much context sensitive button queues, but are more like in game hints on what button you should be pressing "RIGHT NOW" unless you want to get stopped by a wall. sorta like at the start of games where they teach you the ropes. I don't think they will be there all the time...

hmm. I see Railgrinding. Railgrinding is for skateboards, not Hedgehogs. Especially the grind at 1:30. How many times do you think the player pitfalled there before it was burned into his mind?

Again. There is only one thing Sega is awesome at; Trailers. Give me true gameplay, And not from one of Sega's hardwired, impossibly good Sonic game testers that apparently just eat, sleep and earn S ranks on sonic stages, and i'll think more about it.

Whine whine whine, you're all wrong and here's why.

Stop being a bunch of lamewad hipsters and flaming QTEs. Yes it has been used a lot now, but it's so popular to attack them it just looks like you're spouting balls without thinking. These actions, as much as we saw, are barely QTEs in the action games we've seen recently.

They remind me of the original ones in Shenmue where you would have to move out of the way of some inpending doom while running.

The problem with old sonic games (OH NOES OLD SONIC GAMES HAD PROBLEMS!? NO! Don't ruin my sense of quality, blurred with nostalgia!) was that you had to learn the stage's layout to actually achieve speed a lot of the time. Sure, you had the super fast sections you barely controlled, which were probably made more sweet by the fact you spent the other 3/4 of the level bumping into things occasionally. In this, it looks like they have helped this irritating situation by giving you a little warning.

Would you seriously prefer it if you had to play that same level over and over because you didn't know what was coming ahead?

Next was the enemies. You just plow through them? Yeh, there were those side scrolling bits where you did. But the behind view ones made you hit the enemy to hit another in the air, this could be elaborated in later levels.

There was a definite lack of platforming but the wall jumping sections give me a little hope. These slowed down the pace a little and makes me think they would add a little more slow sections. Like it has been mentioned before, the best thing about sonic was the mixture of slow and fast, they complimented eachother. You would get bored of a lack of control, so there was platforming, you would get bored of that, then there would be a fast section. Here's hoping they can keep that balance.

This looks like the best evolution of sonic into the 3D realm ever. It looks like they fixed a lot of the major problems (bumping into things, turning corners. Did you see how awesome that drift was?) There's still a chance they could mess it up, after all, they're not the best coders.

Everyone seems to hold the retro sonics as these high and mighty deities but really, they were alright. Not fantastic, just alright. They were good fun. I think it's time people started being realistic about games, you're never going to make a perfect game, unless you want to chip in some of your own cash to the development.

I could go on but I doubt most of you will read this and you'll continue to talk from your asses while making penis jokes.

"Whine whine whine, you're all wrong and here's why."

Man, you know you're in for a winner, when a comment starts with that. You know, the game looks okay. I wasn't especially impressed, but then I haven't really cared about Sonic (the games or the character) since the '90s. Frankly, I think he's just a dead horse, and you know how the games industry loves beating on those.

As others have said, it looks like there are a lot of - what is it called? "Quicktime"? A lot of those moments, God of War, etc. Which is lame. And it didn't look really compelling. Better than anything else in recent memory. Still, is that really enough? "It doesn't look as bad as it usually does"? Meh. I probably won't ever play it.

so is the game just about holding one direction and pressing jump? oh wait, i guess that describes all the best sonic games.

on a serious note, the classic, good sonic games do involve some solid platforming and exploration. i hope they don't lose that entirely. i'm sure they are only showing the "big wow" sequences here, so one can only hope.
