In the latest Talking to Women about Videogames (post coming on Tuesday), I had the audacity to say that Mass Effect was the last great single player-only series in gaming. That was silly. It was arguably even sillier when a few Youtube commenters corrected me, stating that Skyrim (a game they have presumably not yet played) is the real last great single player experience in gaming.

That got me wondering; where were the Zelda fans at to defend their favorite series? Isn't anyone out there ready to declare that Skyward Sword (another game they have presumably not yet played) is the really realest last great single player experience in gaming?

All I know is, the game looks like it has everything it needs to be one of the best Zelda games ever made. The graphics look amazing by any standard, the swimming looks similar to the excellent Zora Link-stuff from Majora's Mask, there are switches to whip, water spouts to ride, spiked walls to dash from, and... purple zombie Bokoblins? All great in theory. We'll see for ourselves next month if Nintendo pulls it off in practice.

I need to fix my Wii for this release, sadly, I don't have the moolah for either this game or send my Wii for repairing.

I need to fix my 360 too.

Did I mention that my life is sad?

November is a month of 3 games for me. Uncharted 3, Super Mario 3D Land, and last but the opposite of least, Skyward Sword.

Honourable mention to Mario Kart 7 at the start of December.

Holmes, your mistake wasn't that you thought that Mass Effect was the last great single player game, I mean really, who can fault you on that? But I do think that you made an atrocious mistake when you spoke in absolutes about one game series being better than another in such a subjective medium. I could go on, but I'm not going the rewrite that entire argument.

Nobody is bitching about what some people say about Skyrim/Mass Effect being "the last great single player experience in gaming", because Zelda is in another level.

Where Skyrim/Mass Effect could be a remarkable mortal, Zelda is a god. It's just silly trying to compare.

@ BenelliM4 - Rewrite an entire argument? Where did you write it the first time?

Also, Pac-Man: Championship Edition DX is better than Heavy Rain. Subjectivity be damned!

I don't think Zelda is the last great single player experience in gaming. It's one of the best, but I can think of plenty other awesome single-player only games out there; or at least games where the multiplayer doesn't take focus enough to justify an online pass. (Granted a lot of them are on Nintendo hardware, so online passes would probably be a disaster anyway. :P)

Zelda doesn't really get the same defense because (at least with Skyward Sword) it hasn't gotten the same amount of hype as Skyrim. I'll still get it and lock myself in my room with it and come out 50-100 hours later, I just don't think I need to prove it to people, especially not you Jonathan, considering I know you share my feelings on the topic.

I have one issue with the trailers we have seen so far. While dungeons are great, and what everyone thinks of when they think zelda, I feel that each zelda game has lived and died on the strength of it's over world. I know it's supposed to be in the sky but I haven't gotten a good feel for that yet. The water trailer showed a bit of the world but the next trailer I see I want to have a good amount of link running around outside of dungeons.

And if your a fan of nintendo it goes without saying that your games aren't threatened by the encroachment of forced online multiplayer. It seems link nintendo is more afraid of the internets then the mothers who buy wii fit.

@ VGFreak1225 - I'm hope that people know that there are countless great single player games coming down the pipe; DarkSiders 2, Batman Arkham City, Bioshock Infinite, Super Mario 3D Land, Lollipop Chainsaw, Luigi's Mansion, Little King's Story 2, Resident Evil Revelations, the list goes on and on.

People do know that, right?!?!?!?

I dont know about this Zelda; the more I see and the less I'm excited about it. This used to be my #1 gaming priority never missed an episode (even bought a second-hand Game Cube just to play Twilight Princess); but all I see there is a very pretty game with no surprises, all these "new" items are just variations around gameplay mechanics we already know too well.

Oh I also don't have a Wii muha haha maybe I should start there ;p

Yes they do... do you? Not exactly sure where that Mass Effect thing came from, excellent as it is. Not to mention a game doesn't suddenly lose it's "great singleplayer" status is it has multiplayer, even if that multiplayer mode is awful.

I don't think single player is going anywhere - there's too much demand for it. I like playing Street Fighter and Mario Kart online, but a lot of the time I can take or leave multiplayer, it's single player where I can get stuck into a story and lose myself. Zelda is going to be absolutely majestic. Zombie Bokoblins! But in the meantime, I'm playing Oblivion for the first time and I'm really enjoying that, and this Friday Arkham City arrives.

@Patrick

So this. I feel like any time anyone defends a Zelda/Mario/Metroid game, you're labelled as a Nintendo fanboy/apologist and that your opinion isn't valid unless you have strict loyalty to the PS3 or 360.

Not to mention a game doesn't suddenly lose it's "great singleplayer" status is it has multiplayer, even if that multiplayer mode is awful.

This is debatable. The development and inclusion of a multiplayer mode takes resources - most important of which is time. The more time spent on a multiplayer mode, the less time that can be spent on the single player campaign. As a result, the story may end up being shorter, the gameplay mechanics less polished, etc. The shoehorning of unwanted and unnecessary multiplayer into a single player franchise upsets fans of the franchise because they don't want the single player experience which they love to suffer.

Just because the single player mode still exists doesn't mean it will be as good as it could be without multiplayer at its side.

Skyward Sword really is looking amazing, I hope it turns out to be better than TP and more like Wind Waker.

Needless to say, singleplayer isn't going anywhere. Multiplayer is going to increase, but I doubt that singleplayer games will ever completely die off. If they do I'm going to have to buy a lot less video games.

But but but but ..... if game developers don't cram a multiplayer mode that most people probably won't play or will play for 10min then never return to ..... how will they extort an onlinepass tax? HOW?

Then games will stop being produced because all the developers will have starved to death T______T

With Aonuma at the helm Zelda is a shadow of its former self. It's gradually been getting worse over time and becoming more distant from what it once was (an arcade-action game RPG hybrid). Instead of exploration and exciting combat we get more puzzles, more linearity, more dungeons, and less overworld to explore, and the combat continues to be dumbed down garbage, sticking to the OoT battle system which just shows how behind the times the series is.

The real problem is Aonuma's background is PC adventure games, both in design and in his preferred choice of games. He's gone on record as saying he doesn't like reflex-oriented games (which is what the older Zelda games were about), so it's no shock that the newer Zeldas are more like glorified PC adventure games. And as a result it should be no shock that in Japan the series is bombing hard, with the DS games going straight to the bargin bin, and Twilight Princess not faring much better. Abroad the series has been stagnant in sales and gradually losing interest.

The simple reason that people sound more excited for a game like Skyrim is because it's actually closer to what Zelda used to be. An action-RPG hybrid. Everything that was in the older Zeldas but gone now is in Skyrim on steroids. Exploration on a massive scale. Non-linearity (the older Zeldas were very non-linear) and you don't even have to follow the story if you don't want to. You can go around and do whatever you want. The only area that might be lacking would be combat, but it looks like they're trying to improve on that with Skyrim.

Simply put, Skyrim outclasses modern Zelda in content, in allowing the player greater control in what they do, in replay value, and in actually making the player feel like on they're on a grand adventure in a huge world. Modern Zelda feels small because the player is constantly being guided on where to go next with no freedom to choose how to go about things (which runs contrary to the older games), and the "content" and world is just a bunch of cutscenes. Instead of the player having greater control over what they do, they have less.

Not to mention that Nintendo has fallen into the trap of hitting the reset button with every game they make, ala Final Fantasy.

That's where your "enthusiasm" for Zelda has gone. I'll go play the game that actually does the job of Zelda better than Zelda actually does today.

Game looks amazing, and I just want to play it!

Zelda trailers work best at showing off a million epic mechanics at once, running around a dungeon not so much.

I didn't really understand why people were talking about Majora's Mask Zora Link swimming until he RIPPED out of the water like that!

Loving the eastern stylings of that dungeon too, love me some lotus and things with lots of arms.

Mass Effect is grossly overrated.

Zelda fans on the other hand don't need to defend anything, people who dare say it's anything but gold are simply jealous of the Nintendo fans that enjoy it.

While I certainly agree the Mass Effect series is great and I really loved them both, I cant say its the last great single player only series.

The Batman: Arkham series is another(I'm assuming after reading reviews).

I am going to lie to Dr-Peace right here. Zelda is so much better than Mass Effect.
