New Silent Hill: Rubbish Pyramid Head confirmed (also, November release) photo

Some new information has surfaced on the Western-developed Silent Hill: Homecoming. Chief among them for me is the grim confirmation that Pyramid Head is indeed being recycled and crammed in to this new installment, something I was trying to pretend wasn't real. As if that wasn't lame enough, the fact that he's the musclebound skirt-wearing version as seen in the Silent Hill movie, and not the creepy smock-adorned version from Silent Hill 2, suggests even more to me that this game will be a cheap disappointment crammed full of homages to the film more than anything else.

Pyramid Head, the nurses, the look of the Otherworld -- all of it has been lifted directly from the movie, which is rather pitiful and creatively lazy in my opinion. I'll stop bashing it before I sound like a Fallout fan or something, but I'll just say that this is not a game I am excited for, and to say that about a Silent Hill game is something that saddens me greatly.

Still, check out the new shots over at ActionTrip, and also be aware that Konami has pushed the release date back to November. Maybe they found something else from previous SH installments to recycle and shoehorn in at the last minute. It has been confirmed that a PC version is in the works as well.

Also, f*ck the developers of this game for making me feel like a whiny Diablo fanboy complaining about new games. If you'll excuse me, I'm off to make a melodramatic online petition to continue my Silent Hill bitching in peace.

Goddamit. The movie wasn't horrible...but c'mon. They could do so much more with this franchise, and they are just letting it slowly go down the drain.

Yeah matey, relax a bit hey ;)

We all know Silent Hill has been going steadily downhill since part 2. 4 had its moments, but there is only so many times a western audience can play the same stages over and over again, surely?

And did you really think the movie was that bad? I thought it was at least on par with most of the other shitty horror films released in the past 30 years. It had the game's atmosphere down pat in some parts...

But yeah, rehashing bad guys from previous games is always a bad sign.

So...Silent Hill is now just a Silent Hill rip-off, instead of doing new stuff?

lol Jim only you could whine about developers making you whine. Whilst i share your oppinions on this game to an extent, i somehow remain cautiously optimistic. I heard the argument that because of Pyramids head presence in the game it automatically make it crap but im looking at it with "Jung" in mind and maybe he/shes a concept springing from our collective unconcious. ... hahaha alright its a bit of a stretch but i really want a new silent hill.

Birdseye:

The first three quarters of the Silent Hill film were pretty decent, but that's no excuse for the developers to copy it shamelessly. I want to play a new Silent Hill, not a pathetic rip-off of a slightly above average videogame movie.

Is this where I sign the petition?

Pyramid head in a skirt... maybe they'll add a new feature where he rips the skin off of... nevermind.

You know, I am really not suprised. Cinema has to do things a bit differently when working from the original source material. Spidermans organic webshooters are now Marvel canon as well as the location of Wolverines claws (between fingers rather than on top of the hand.)I could list many more. This is just an attempt at synergy for the people who have seen the movie, but perhaps have not played the games before. If they can still atract the core SH fans and attract new players, all the better for them than. Let us just hope the game isn't ass.

I just wish the movie producers would realise that the only people that are going to see the movie are the people that want the movie to remain close to the source material.

Trying to reinterpret source material so as not to alienate newcomers just ends up alienating everyone.

I can definitely understand your feelings about the new Silent Hill game. It basically is a rip-off of the movie, in certain aspects. It may have the same characters, same kind of effects that the movie incorporated, but remember, it will be a totally different storyline. It's not going to have the same protagonist, or other supporting actors, but a fresh roster. So all is not lost.

Also, if you really want to think about it, the Silent Hill movie was a ripoff of Silent Hill 1 & 2, from the story to the characters, even though the protagonist was different. So then Silent Hill: Homecoming is a rip-off of a rip-off? Just lovely!

Jim:

Well when it is proven to be a pathetic rip-off of an above average video game movie then you can start your ranting. However unless I am mistaken you do not have a review copy of the game, so sit back, relax and stop sensationalizing :D

I thought the devs said they had played the games? That they were fans of the games? Obviously not, if they think that Pyramid Head could exist outside of James' own personal hell.

This is incrediby lame. Expected, but lame.

I thought the movie was fucking fantastic... captured the mood of the games perfectly for me. It was far from perfect, but I think it was a very good attempt at an adaptation.

Admit it Jim, when you saw the Silent Hill film, and I know you did, you loved Pyramid Head ripping that girls skin off. Everyone loves that.

Seriously, unless the game has the masculine theme of the second why bother with Pyramid Head? Can't they come up with something even worse/better than him?

Silent Hill: Homecoming, the game based on the movie based on the game. Where our All American Action Hero (tm) can just shoot his psychological demons to death. With GoW cover systems, because Gears is a cool guy.

Silent Hill in eastern hands was made by artists and programmers. Not the best gameplay mechanics, but heavily story driven, with complicated characters and beautiful visual metaphors.

Silent Hill in western hands is dumbed down, recycled trash. $20 says that this game has "aren't we so clever" satire of the War on Terror, and that this dude's demons are he was forced to shoot some kids. And the 'good' ending will have him walking off into the desert holding some middle eastern kid's hand.

So far, it looks like every choice made has been the lowest-common-denominator, painfully obvious, student project choice. There's no maturity to it any more.

Pyramid Head doesn't even BELONG in this damn game. He's clearly symbolic of James' sexual frustration in SH2. Are western developers really too fucking stupid to understand metaphor? What about subtlety, ffs?

Such a damn shame.

The game looks bad, it seems bad, it's designed badly and to top it off it's not even being MADE by the original developer. If this game does not suck worse than Alone In the Dark, I'll be surprised O_o

GODDAMMIT! I really want to like this game, but they certainly are making it a challenge. I'll still save final judgment until I get my own hands on it, but I'll be going into it with very low expectations. It's got to be better than Origins, right? RIGHT?!

It's not that they're copying, but Pyramid head has a special place in and ONLY in Silent hill 2(One of my favorite games of all time).
I can't believe the nosedive this series has taken.

Hmm, it's really interesting to read about this series as I loved the first game but had a bit of a gaming hiatus afterwards and never played the rest of the series. Sounds like 2 was a good jump off point for that series. Too bad I missed it :(

I actually liked the movie and particularly loved the look of shock I received from the girl I was dating at the time as she watched with me near the end... when the barb wire... went places... muwahaha! Had nothing to do with the game as far as I knew but hot damn that made for a fucking hardcore ending.

However, good movie fun does not translate to good game fun.

Fuck this fucking game and fuck Konami in the ass with something large and painful for handing development off to some piece of shit nothing studio who proceeded to rape the series of all its recognisable characters in the hopes of selling their piece of shit Resident Evil 4 knock-off survival-action game.

I hope nobody buys this thing (wishful thinking) and the talentless hacks have to get jobs pushing burgers round or something befitting them.

As if we didn't all know this was going to happen the moment it was announced who was to develop it. Did anyone really start out with that much hope for the new Silent Hill?

Silent Hill is probably my favorite series and there is nothing about this one that has got me excited for its release. Every screenshot that ive seen looks like ass. And those stupid nurse designs are stupid! I used to be terrifyed of the nurses. Now i cant stop staring at their cleavage. And theyre rediculous mo-cap. Its like they just grabbed someone of the street and told them to walk like an idiot. Bah. Anyways. There had better be some fucking bleeding walls.

This isn't the first time Silent Hill has copied itself. Have you played Origins, Jim? They lifted the look/feel from the movie in that one, too, complete with the "paint lifting itself off walls" transformation to the otherworld.

I liked the movie, I got what I expected out of it... but seriously... wtf. Konami needs to step in.

i dont remember the the paint lifting in Origins. Pretty sure they just used the mirrors to go between worlds.

@Timmeh
yeah im just sayin with all the other stuff theyre ripping from the previous games ill be pissed if they decide to leave out the bleeding walls. Playing the last bit of Silent Hill 3 was for me, some of the best creepy disturbing gaming ever.

Here's the thing you're not all getting. If KONAMI had a problem with it, they would have told the studio to change it. They have quite a bit of say in the matter, and they won't publish it if they think the product doesn't push the series further. Same scenario with the Silent Hill movie. Konami wanted to make sure it would pay homage properly and worked with Christopher Ganz to make sure he directed it properly. I'm sure they are doing the same with this game.

A while back on Kotaku there was a massive discussion about Pyramid head in this game, and it actually does have some justification. PH didn't completely come from James' head, it was inspired by a painting in the historical society that he saw when he visited Silent Hill with Mary (you see the painting in the game). The executioners of Silent Hill's resident crazy ancient cult wore those giant helmets, modeled after their Red God (who has a ridiculous name I can't remember). The Red God is in a painting in SH3. James needed someone to punish him, and so that manifested in the shape of the executioner, Pyramid Head.

I think it's just laziness on their part, especially since it uses the movie version. I doubt the Collective actually knows all that stuff I just said, though. If they think that this is actually fanservice, then they don't know Silent Hill fans. I'm still hoping the game will somehow be good anyways, but it's doubtful.

i have no idea why, but i actually have a bit of faith that this one could be good. that's saying a lot, given the amount of faith i have in pretty much every current-gen game coming out soonish - which is zero. in the back of my brain i know silent hill 5 will probably be horrible and ass up the series, but faith makes people retarded. that's the whole point.

Take a great game, make a crappy movie, then make that into a game. For shame Konami, for shame. I'm a big fan of SH. I've been following SH5 for awhile now, I've very little hope for this installment. The only surprises here are if the game doesn't completely suck. Makes me sad, so sad (I shed a single tear).

Oh for the love of god, will you all, especially jim, Shut the F up! You bitch and bitch and complain that the game is poorly designed when you hardly have seen it. Maybe you should be fucking congratulating the americans for at least attempting what is, to us fans, deemed impossible.
but no, oh no. the world can't turn if not the general consumer to blast it fo sake of blasting it. You have barely seen the game, you have barely seen the entirety of the game. so don't judge a game till you play it.
