Also why are folks freaking about about 'mandatory fights'. Non of the fights in Silent Hill games are technically MANDATORY. Half of the strategy to this survival horror franchise is just staying a live, and running away was always an option, sometimes a great one (depending on supplies and such).
Not really a big deal.
I bet this game is fucking shit.
That's the actual line from the article (sorry Jim, but you did a horrible translation error there), and it's not that bad at all. I swear, Silent Hill fans are as pathetic as Sonic fans. What a bunch of whiny little bitches! This team actually sounds like they know what they are doing.
"Horror is about making you feel vulnerable. You can't feel vulnerable if you've got a giant gun or an unbreakable fire axe." That's good news.
They also mention that the game uses occasionally fixed camera angles for cinematic scares, but not always. They've learned from the "ice = danger, no ice = safe" mistake made be Shattered Memories and are aiming to keep things unpredictable as you explore.
It all sounds great, and more like a true survival horror game than anything on the 360/PS3 in years. People seriously need to grow up.
Instead, they should focus on trying to pretend to be halfway competent in telling a story and balancing the survival/resources aspect to create something that can honestly sit on the same shelf of the first four games. Not that they will. I'd settle for a game on par with SH4 at this point.
tiny silver lining: Well, if you're a fan of the series, you know why a water theme is a good idea in terms of creating convincing decaying environments. Better than ice on a non-HD system, at any rate. So who knows, maybe they'll actually do a little UrbEx and get creative again rather than just wallpapering every visible surface with the same textures.
The title doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, I guess, but at least it's not "Silent Hill Underground" or something. It could easily have been that.
All three of the initial games had very old school controls and menus, melodramatic / poorly translated dialogue in places, repetitive (sewer) sections, hit and miss puzzles, and almost no jump scares. Graphically, only the 3rd game could really be called beautiful in its time. Several critics panned SH2 for being too empty and boring at the time, hard as that is to believe.
But none of these flaws mattered, because the developers had such brilliant imagination and attention to detail, that their creations are STILL being explored and debated by the fanbase a decade later. I hope Vatra has some people with imagination, even if what they end up with is as different from a classic Silent Hill as SH:SM was.
But, QTE? WTF!
FIRST thing that popped into my head when I read that was Hydrophobia. >.< But honestly I have actually liked ALL the SH games that I've played (the only ones I haven't played yet are 5 and SM). So I have no doubt I will enjoy this game as well.
That said, I'll watch with gaurded optimism. I will put up with some lame gameplay if the setting and scares are strong enough. But I will also probably wait till it lands in the bargin bin if that is the case.
CRAP. WTF? I don't want GTA I want a SILENT HILL GAME GOD DAMMIT! >_<
looks like SH3 shall remain the last good silent hill.
Anyway, let's just wait first before we call it a dud.
first, why has no one mentioned the fact that though this may likely turn out to be a decent game, fact of the matter is that it will more than likely not feel anything like a genuine silent hill experience atmosphere-ically due to the absence of Akira Yamaoka!!!
believe it or not his sound direction/composing/engineering is one of the major factors in the success of the silent hill franchise. his contributions were pretty much the heart and soul of the silent hill universe, especially after Team Silent disbanded and i must say his work is the main reason i really fell in love with the series.
now i'm all for fresh starts and trying new things when it comes to games, but this is something that i can't get excited about. Silent Hill Downpour has not excited me in the least. i will give the game it's fair chance and play it but i dont think this game will be a silent hill game in spirit at all. Konami should've pretty much ended the series or be fair and hire Yamaoka as a freelance with very very attractive contract clauses to entice him to work with the series again cause otherwise silent hill is DEAD!!!
this new game is just a possibly competent water themed survival horror title. love it or hate it but Silent Hill Homecoming may very well be the LAST TRUE SILENT HILL TITLE WE'LL EVER SEE!!!!!
and please stop badmouthing SH Homecoming.. anyone who praises SH Shattered Memories yet says Homecoming sucks clearly has abysmally subpar gaming tastes.
I finally got around to playing Shattered Memories recently and I actually liked it
