New Shantae game for DSiWare? Yes, it's real! photo

[Update: Nintendo Power has a full feature on the game that confirms THREE episodic releases in the Shantae universe!]

Shantae is one of those games that you either remember with incredibly fond feelings and wish for a sequel for or have never heard of. Originally released on the Game Boy Color, the platformer sent you off to Sequin Land in the role of Shantae, a half-genie with the ability to use her hair as a whip. Take that, Bayonetta -- women have been fighting with their hair long before your time! Although, Shantae didn't end up naked because of it. Times have changed...

In a recent email from Nintendo detailing their upcoming releases (which also gave us a release date for Spirit Tracks), we found Shantae: Risky’s Revenge listed at the very bottom. Slated for Q4, all we really know for now its that it will be a DSiWare title. We've contacted WayForward for comment and ought to have more information for you shortly. Seven years of waiting has finally paid off! I can't wait!

Doesn't Shantae have some sort of going back in time potion like Braid but it isn't infinite? Or maybe that's another GB game.

Sadly, it's not Risque's Revenge, but anything that doesn't suck on DSiWare is a welcome addition indeed.

I've always wanted to play that. The graphics of that game look so amazing, I mean its the gameboy color. Not the advance, the COLOR.

The new Nintendo Power actually has some artwork and screenshots. Looks REALLY pretty. Supposedly this is episodic.

I can't wait. WayForward is really helping DSiWare something to care about.

I was hoping I would never actually feel like I had to spend the money on a DSi. Hopefully they'll release all the episodes on a cartridge, but if they don't atleast the DSi is coming to America in white. Anything for some Shantae!

after seeing the GBA boxart, I remember how good this game was for a boxart that would make you think it's some cheesy game catered to young female gamers...but the sucky kind.

maybe I should track down this game and try it out.

GOD DAMNIT, something on DSiWare I actually want. Gah, I gotta go find one on the cheap somewhere now...hopefully.

I never knew about the first Shantae until a few months ago when someone made a C-Blog where Shantae was his number 1 forgotten mascot. I then proceeded to aquire a rom for myself to try it out(couldn't really find a good one though :(, much less one that I could use with a GBA emulator to make it GBA enhanced ).

Hopefully there will be a physical copy release of all three together or something...

This sounds great. I was too young to know about this game when I had my game boy color, and it wasn't called Pokemon, so I didn't play it. I'm happy that I'll be able to experience the sequel when it comes out. Hopefully, it'll be good.

I only remember this game because I read somewhere (probably here) about a dude who used to work on it who was working on some other kinda thing. The details escape me.

Only on DSiware? What a shame, because I would love to have another Shantae game.

I'm hoping that WayForward gets its head out of its ass and releases the full game on a cartridge, and allows its customers to actually OWN what they've paid for.

I'm joining in the DSIWare Exclusivity complaint. I'd gladly pay for this game, but I'm not buying a DSI to do it. Plenty of lesser games with less cult value manage to get published so WayForward should try a little harder to get this game on a DS Card.

Nintendo Power had a column on Shantae in their most recent issue. I knew there was some sort of meaning to that! They even hinted at the release of a sequel, but I didn't think it would be confirmed so soon.

Why would you want, or even care that's its a retail release, or not? So it can fail just like the GBA one did in 2002, and than we won't get another one, for another 7 years. Plus everyone always says that DSiWare needs more good games. Well here you go, now we're getting three of them soon enough!
