New screens, video and hands-on with Legendary: The Box

Hamza CTZ Aziz on First Person Shooter

I recently got the chance to check out Legendary: The Box on the Xbox 360 again. This time though, I was actually able to play it instead of sitting uncomfortably on a couch packed with other gaming journalists while watching someone play the game in front of us. God damn did I hate that. It was like I was a cat and they were dangling a shiny clinking toy in front of me but they wouldn't let me get anywhere near it as they had super glued my paws to the floor. Jerks.

Anyway, hit the jump to read about my short experience with Legendary: The Box

Before I got some hands-on time, I was shown the very beginning of the game again. If you may remember, the game follows a thief named Deckard who was hired to steal Pandora's Box. Deckard decides to open the Box and as well as gaining some powers from the Box, he also unleashes mythical creatures that bring chaos to the entire world. Deckard then joins a group trying to stop the creatures while another group wants to control Pandora's Box to take over the world. All while dealing with the mythical creatures too.

Since the last time I saw this beginning level, a few things have changed. You now have a partner at this point in the game that tells you your objectives. Originally, she was on the evil groups side but switches teams when she finds out what their true goal is. There are health pick-ups all over the place now too. When you suck up health through your new magical hand, you can store it up and use it later whenever you're in a jam.

The fire system is in real time now too. One of the rooms you run into in the beginning gets on fire and slowly engulfs the entire room.

The rest of the level was pretty much the same. As you go on, you see Gryphons eating people and buildings crumble. At the end of the segment, a Golem forms and starts to walk through buildings like they're nothing. The Golem is huge -- taller than most skyscrapers in New York City. And yes, it is going to be a boss fight.

Now then, it's finally time to get my hands-on with the game. This part of the demo starts off in a city and I'm getting shot at as soon as the level begins. The attack on my team and me quickly changes to focus on the Werewolves but they don't stand a chance against them. Once the Werewolves are done with them, they come after my group. These are just the pussy version Werewolves though so they don't take much fire power to take out.

Around the next block sets up an interesting dilemma for the player. My enemies have a Super Werewolf trapped in a cage and my guys are stuck behind a blockade. I have an advantage though, as I'm in a building and I could either take out these guys by shooting them or I can shoot the cage open. I shot the cage open and watched the Super Werewolf go to town on them while I went to let my allies through the blockade. Once the Super Werewolf was down with the soldiers, it directed its attention to me and my team. That's when some regular Werewolves decided to join the battle too. Word of advice: Never let the Super Werewolves out of the cage and always carry the shotgun with you, as it's the best weapon against them.

The level then goes on to this next section with the Minotaur. It busts through some walls, beats the shit out of some enemy soldiers (it even gores one of them!) and once they're all dead, it comes after Deckard.

This is the part where I become a pretentious asshole and let you all know that this boss fight is nowhere near as hard or difficult as the person in this video makes it out to be. Sure, it took a lot to take it down but I was able to take it out before the battle turned into a toreo match.

After the Minotaur is dead, the demo ends but not right before a new enemy is revealed called the Echidna. It's a giant creature that stays underground and the only part of the body you see are it's tentacles which can grab you and take you underground where you die or have a slumber party with the Echidna (at least that's what I'm going to assume).

I got to play one more section of the game, which was the London level that was shown off during EIEIO. This is where you'll see dozens of enemies and allies fighting it out as you try to make your way through the church. It's more of the same except this time you'll get your hands on a chain gun and will have to fight a Gryphon. This level did show me that a lot can happen on the screen with the enemy interaction.

All in all, I did like what I played but the game still needs a lot of work. The build I played was nowhere near ready and had a lot of bugs, understandably. It's still got plenty of time to be worked on though and I was pleasantly surprised to see how much they've gotten done at this point.

My biggest complaints at this point have to be that reloading takes way to long on some of the weapons and getting hit doesn't hurt you as much as it should. Watch the Minotaur battle again. Notice that the ground shakes every time the Mintaor moves yet when it hits you with the club or it's horns, it's seems like you're getting hit with a feather.

The game is still on track for a Spring 2008 release on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
