It's finally time to relax, everybody. The crazy rush of videogames has finally slowed down. At last, we will all have time to play through all the games that have been pilling up. Plus, it won't take me nearly two hours to write and format this release schedule anymore!
The big release, or rather re-releases, of the week are Chrono Trigger and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. SSFIITHDR is a no-brainer for me; I'll definitely be picking that one up. However, I am stumped on whether I should pick up Chrono Trigger. I have never played the game and I feel the only proper way to play this game is on the original Super Nintendo -- I'm just not having any luck finding a copy. Sure, I can just get the DS version now, but my retro senses are telling me I have to play it on the SNES first (and no, don't tell me to get not-ROMs).
Oh, and let's have some fun this week. Which game do you think will do worse: Championship Foosball or Safecracker: The Ultimate Puzzle Adventure? And yes! You guessed right! They're both Wii titles!
Hit the jump for the full list of releases and videos for some of the games. What's looking sw33t to you?
PC: Skate City Heroes, Neopets, Band Manager, Disney's Bolt, Zoo Tycoon 2 Ultimate
DS: Emma in the Mountains, Age of Empire: Mythologies, Neopets Puzzle Adventure, Chrysler Classic Racing, Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force, Syberia, Cradle of Rome, Chrono Trigger
Wii: Ski & Shoot, All Star Cheer Squad, Cake Mania: In the Mix!, King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga, AMF Bowling World Lanes, Iron Chef America: Supreme Cuisine, Championship Foosball, Safecracker: The Ultimate Puzzle Adventure, Chrysler Classic Racing, Winter Sports 2: The Next Challenge
Releasing 11/24/08:
Age of Empire: Mythologies (DS)
Releasing 11/25:
King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga (Wii)
What did they do to Age of Mythologies? They turned it into another turn based strategy game in the style of Advance Wars. I think they ruined it to be honest.
I would have been happy with a port or a remake of AoE2 or AoM to be honest (Surely the DS would be a good console for an RTS and could handle it, although the resolution is lower)
no SF2 super-duper slamma-jamma mega deluxe insane turbo limited HD remix version for me, 360 d-pad equals shit, thereby making SF2 impossible to play... and I refuse to use an analog stick for it. but I will try to pick up Chrono Trigger, I can finally play that game!
I honestly don't know about how the port of Chrono Trigger went, but I know for a fact that all of the ports of Final Fantasy VI have been inferior to the Super Nintendo version in various ways (sadly, including the DS port). I always advise people to pick up game in whatever form to show your support and then download it on one of those SNES emulators.
Again, the Chrono Trigger port could very well be 100% perfect, I'm just saying that past ports of great games haven't.
Playing chrono trigger on a 3 inch screen with head phones or the horrible built in speakers sucks no matter how good the port is.
The snes or ps1 version still looks good on MY CRT HDTV and can even get fake 5.1 surround sound with any decent reciver with dolby pro logic 2.
Hell it might even support dolby prologic since a lot of SNES games did at the time, that was one of the reasons I bought a dolby prologic system then.
I'm still caught between wanting Street Fighter or not. I suppose that it hinges on whether or not people are willing to be patient while I learn how to play it. Other than that, not much else for me right now since I've got a bit of a DS backlog.
I'll definitely be picking up Chrono Trigger. I've never played it, and although I'm not normally an RPG guy, the story sounds so epic that I just can't resist.
ace of knaves: Please do. I typically hate RPGs with their overlong lengths, redundant convoluted storyline, boring combat systems, random encounters, crappy characters, LOOOOOTS of grinding, etc. CT doesn't suffer from any of this, 'cept that prehistoric girl. She sucks.
Hamza, Chrono Trigger is a very replayable game, and one of the best out there, so maybe you could start with the DS version and if you like it, find yourself an copy of the original. If you really want your first time to be on the SNES, here are three options:
1) We love you. I don't have a copy but it seems some other posters here do, so maybe they can lend you their catridge. Some SNES cartridges are starting to give out (in my experience), and nothing sucks more than a lost RPG save game, so be wary!
2) When I was in Orlando, I found a weird mom-and-pop used videogame store that sold copies of rare games like Earthbound[i] and [i]Chrono Trigger for the same cheap price as the non-rare games (of which they had many). I don't know why I didn't pick a few copies up . . . perhaps I was broke and not thinking on my toes . . . but in any case, maybe you can call around Orlando used game stores and see if you can order a copy. It's a shot in the dark, but there you go.
3) Bear with me, okay?
If you use a PC, there's nothing I can do for you, but if you have a Mac (Intel Macbook+), you can get a perfect emulation of Chrono Trigger that's even better than playing it on an old CRT television. I'm extremely particular about my pixels so I generally don't like emulation, but this is the exception.
What you need is BSNES, the Emulator Enhancer v2.3, and one of those SNES-controller USB adapters. The first two are free, the latter costs $22 or so. You also need that one obvious other thing.
Install it, go into the preferences (this is where the enhancer comes in), turn off bi-linear filtering or interpolation or whatever they call it, turn on the v-sync, turn off aspect-ratio correction, turn on auto-full-screen, and map your SNES controller.
If you have an Intel Macbook or a more power Mac, this is pixel-perfect, audio-perfect, controller-perfect emulation. It's fucking beautiful. The PC version of BSNES does not have an optional Emulator Enhancer as far as I know and thus suffers from v-sync issues or some crap, which is why I don't recommend it.
If you're altogether opposed to it (or "opposed to it, nudge nudge wink wink") for reasons other than inaccuracy, my apologies. I'm just trying to help you out because Chrono Triggeris worth it.
This site could use a better message system it don't make t that much sense and seems to less intergrated with the site in a collective whole than even the wii online with friend codes.
Oh and it is hard to find I sent messages now I cant find it again so can't tell you.
@ Cube: I'm not sure what your point is. First off, those are all Macs running XP in the pic, and secondly, I'm not trying to instigate a flame war, or even suggesting one OS is better than another. All I said was there is a particular bit of software that some guy made for the Mac version of BSNES (which he ported himself, I believe) that isn't available on Windows. It has nothing to do with the hardware or the operating system.
Let's not get off-topic here.
(But yes, the comment system here kind of sucks. Comment tracking only works for comments in the last 24 hours and the 50 comments per page limit is buggy and inconvenient. I think it's a work in progress.)
David Quinn Carder: Wow! Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.
First, let me address the comment system. Yes, it isn't perfect, but I can tell you we're going to improve the hell out of it early next year. In the mean time, just click on a user's name and it will take you to their profile page on Dtoid where you should see a PM button near the top of the page (right underneath the user's banner spot).
As for finding a copy of the game, I actually work in a mom and pop store myself and it's so hard to get that game in.
I don't own a Mac and I can't immerse myself into a game unless it's on a console. I need the original and I won't be satisfied until I get it. There are plenty of logical solutions to play the game and I can't explain why I want the OG copy.
and my point is there is nothing on mac worth anythnig, the only reason I have the mac running on my PC is for those freaky dudes at work who insist on giving me useless mac files to work with.
If you have a "home theater PC" zsnes can replicate SNES on a HDTV out put and improve on it on the TV. with w wide pic of filters and also offers sourround sound interpolation if you sound card is good enough amoung other things.
it will also upscale it to insanely high res if your monitor supports it.
And they both featured a blong hair chick side kick...and well the sprite died at the end of secret of mana so I thought they replaced him with a frog dude...
Well I don't know what Pacopaco was playing but Final Fantasy VI on the GBA was beautiful. As is Chrono Trigger on the DS. Sure it's not a "faithful" reproduction of the SNES experience, but then aagain you can play it wherever you want. And find a decent set of earphones and you're good to go. Just don't get too involved and miss your train stop like I did.
Humm I guess it has went up since When i got mine new near launch of the game, hell i dont even remeber what I paid since it was a gift for christmas 1995..
still not as shocking a rise as Bonk 3 CD version, and some of my neo geo stuff though.. phatasy star 4 was like $90 when it came out I think chrono trigger was about the same...
and you should have this, it has crazy jazz music about crhono trigger.
and really If you ever played through the far worse chrono cross on the ps1, then even the not so great port of chrono trigger will look like a golden god shiny and covered in vaseline for you.
Chrono cross is not good 80% of the time. But they did give me a free chrono trigger clock with it.
If you want it on a big screen the ps1 is a cheeper version that has been printed a bjallion times over.
Crono Trigger is an awful, awful game. The only positive thing I can possibly say about it is that it's graphics are gorgeous. Everything else is piss poor. Cross is so much better it's not even funny.
There are no games to buy this week. As much as I would like to play SF2HD, without an internet capable of supporting an online match, there's really no reason for me to DL it. I'll def. get it when I have better internets, though.
Eric: you have maintained the status quo of me never agreeing with you on anything in the entire time I've seen you comment on things (well besides Atlus related stuff but that's besides the point). CT is a fun game. Overrated as hell? Yes. More overrated than FF7? No. Worth playing if you've never touched it before? Hell yes.
Cross was much more interesting than Trigger. The core gameplay may have been a little more convoluted than the relatively simple Trigger, but I'll make that trade for a better story any second of the day, any day of the week.
You like the story of cross better? I thought it was far more convoluted and far less involving that trigger's. I can't think of anything memorable about cross, but trigger seems to stick in my mind a lot more.
Maybe it's just a case of rose colored glasses, but I like trigger more still.
