Everyone knows that the Call of Duty franchise is hot sh*t. Lots of people buy it. But a game making $360 million in one day? That's insane.
Call of Duty: Black Ops blew away every previous first-day sales record with $360 million pulled in on launch day. Mind you, that's just the figure for North America and UK. The previous record was held by Modern Warfare 2, which nabbed an impressive $310 million in the 24 hour period. That's two records, two years in a row, both for Call of Duty.
On that first day, November 9th, over 5.6 million copies of Black Ops were sold. Activision Blizzard's top dog, Bobby Kotick, says that they're also on track to beat a five day record of $550 million. Dollar bills, y'all.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
What was that guy saying about Black Ops not selling as well as MW2 again?
What line exactly??? I'm really just curious. I get that you don't like the game but what exactly makes it over rated? I understand people not liking COD but for $60 you def. get your moneys worth compared to other games that last 8-10 hours.
I've always thought of CoD as an overrated franchise, but I was trying to not be an ass this time around. But the sales are just too much, a game like this just doesn't deserve to sell so much in a day. That's just my opinion, if you like the game then whatever.
Black Ops is not super innovative, but it is fun, polished, and all of my friends on xbox live have it. Confusing how people bash an awesome game because lots of other people like it.
And for those who think 5.6M people > opinion, ever seen Avatar? Or Titanic? Extreme publicity and the excitement of the masses does not > the expert opinion of the critics.
But seriously who cares anyways, except Acti and their millions...
Cool:) I can agree to differing opinions:)
Back to topic, I can't believe I liked the campaign as much as I did. Treyarch took so many risk in the story department and I feel like they succeded. It may of not impressed everyone, but with this game done I would love to see treyarch try and make a new title.
Activision does not get a cent of my money, fucking disgusting company.
It might not be innovative our anything, but it works for me because I've never bought a CoD game before.
I can't wait to pick up my copy, beat the 5-hour campaign, play the multi-player for a few more hours and then sell it out of boredom. Hmmm, ya know, I think I'll just play the 10,000 other Call of Duty games Activision rehashed over the years instead.
360.
If you can handle the fact half the time bullets don't hit there mark, the fact there is no danger playing this game even on the hardest difficulty then yeah it's not bad. firefight zombie mode isn't bad it's pretty much the same thing as world at war just in a different setting, wish they had made numerous maps with that mode, but this isn't bungie that made it. as for the COD series as a legitimate complaint they never have any sense of urgency or danger while playing them, they seem far to easy to play no matter what difficulty you put them on, multi-player might be great for some but i like a single player campaign that will make me wanna come back more than once with some multi-player as the icing on top, not as the cake itself.
Keepin' it real up in the field, aight?
People who buy on day one, aren't buying "the game" they're buying the name and the hype.
(there's nothing wrong with that, I buy games based on name and hype myself sometimes)
But people who buy on day 20+ are buying a game out in the wild, a game they've probably tried out at a buddies house and actually know what they are paying for.
It saddens me that the industry can pretty much work solely on day one sales for games like this, without even considering that day one sales have nothing to do with the actual quality of the game.
Others: It's all fine to not like COD because it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but when people like me who spent 20 days of total game time on multiplayer for MW2 hear about a new addition to the franchise - it's going to be bought. I honestly know that Activision is evil, but Treyarch is not and I won't punish them and put them under the bus because their publisher happens to be an asshat. I surely don't punish a country's people for what their leaders do.
I don't even give a shit if this game was Dora The Explorer. To see something in this media do this well with the general public means only better things for it. We'll go through a period of COD clones because businesses want to cash in, but eventually people who discovered the fun of gaming through COD will venture out and discover the other titans of our culture. To have our hobby legitimized along with other forms of popular media will grant us the same power of those.
Miley Cyrus and Soulja Boy are popular. So are Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Stones, Bjork, The Beatles, Miles Davis, and BB King. Your point? The masses may be asses, but they're not the ones making the music or the games. If your enjoyment is equal to your happiness, then you have every right to fuck off of COD if you don't get anything out of it. Your personal tastes don't dictate how other people's brains fire, so you're soapbox is unnecessary and kind of self-aggrandizing.
