Are you desperate to know things about Mercury Steam and Kojima Production's new Castlevania game, Lords of Shadows? I suggest watching the trailer again, but if you're really desperate then checking out David Cox's Twitter would be a good idea. He's a producer on the game and he's been letting some details leak out about the game's development.
First, and foremost, is that the PS3 is the lead platform for development, but Cox promises it will look and play the same on both systems. This is most likely true, as when games have noticable difference they are usually developed with the 360 as the lead system. Second, and here we're getting into minutia, but Cox says that the camera is going to be fixed in the game, meaning they're probably going for a cinematic feel over a player controlled feel.
Neither of these facts really makes me any more excited for the game. I buy Castlevania games to play a Castlevania game, not an action fighter that looks inspired by God of War and Devil May Cry. Sometimes a game series doesn't need to be "reborn."

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Ugh. I've really had enough of games trying to be like movies.
If I wanted to watch a movie, I'd watch a movie. There is absolutely NO excuse for not giving camera control to the player in 2010.
Although making a movie entirely from a game engine and watching it from any perspective is pretty awesome.
I completely understand your motivations, as outlined by yourself, but don't you think, maybe, you're being a bit preemptive with your negativity?
The Castlevania series has been doing extremely well on the DS. And you know exactly what you're getting when you purchase them. That "Castlevania" game you make mention of; however, I see no reason to pan this title just yet. Let them give it (another) shot. It's true that 3D Castlevanias have sucked, but my hope certainly hasn't abated. Maybe this time, they'll actually make it good.
Also, the buzz-word "cinematic" seems to be sticking in everyone's craw, again unnecessarily (in my ever-so-humble opinion, of course). No matter how much we protest, this is, first and foremost, a VISUAL medium. Interactivity is essential, but the primary way we experience video games is with our sense of sight. It's absolutely redundant to state that a game is cinematic. Like, no shit, right? And so, maybe, reacting so harshly to a buzz-word some know-nothing corporate asshole decided sounded good on the box is a bit useless.
Being cinematic can be a good thing, fellows. Uncharted 2 is cinematic.
Fans have told Konami several times, "Ain't broke, don't fix" with the 2D games and then they go 3D and fuck it all up again.
Aria of Sorrow
Portrait of Ruin
Order of Ecclesia
Ain't broke, don't fix.
Order of Ecclesia made large strides to move it further back to the style established in Simon's Quest all those years ago while retaining the lessons learned from the "Metroidvanias," Dawn of Sorrow most notably.
Order of Ecclesia was pitch-perfect Castlevania. If you want to make it in 3D with a 2D perspective (like NSMB Wii), go nuts. If its just gonna be another cruddy Devil May Cry knock-off, I'll just stick to the real entries which appear on handhelds.
Then again, I did miss all but two of the secret stages... never mind.
My point is that they are still making the "proper" Castlevanias, and so another attempt at a 3D iteration is perfectly acceptable. They aren't sacrificing 2D Vania games. There's been a steady flow of those, as listed by yourself.
Telling a company not to be progressive about their properties is just stupid. "Ain't broke" philosophies are all well and good, but this is a business, and they need to freshen things up a bit to continue to hook consumers. How on Earth could you possibly malign them for not only continuing to produce 2D Vania games, but on top of that, making attempts to make progress with the series with 3D iterations? Bitch about them if they're shit, by all means. But don't begrudge them the effort.
...But then I realize that this community is the most fickle, most ridiculously (and unnecessarily) over-critical group of people in the fucking world, Hell bent on finding something to bitch about.
At this point I feel it necessary to let you know, again, that they are still producing excellent Vania games in 2D... I have a feeling you're going to back-burner that little point in an attempt to further display the needless righteous indignation about "how dare they...3D...etc., etc., etc."
And I think this is a giant not even Kojima can slay. He might on some level "get" Castlevania, but his involvement here is even more peripheral to its development that his dealings with Silicon Knights and the Twin Snakes game.
I hate it when developers have a lead platform, or actually, when they make it public. It only fuels the fanboy rage, and that serves to annoy the hell out of all of us. Still, I'm optimistic about this game, since it's made by Kojima and all. Not super-excited, just optimistic. I haven't seen a good 3D Castlevania that I'm aware of, which is why I'm trying not to get excited.
Lolwut? Now please, name ONE GOOD Castlevania game, where you have camera-control.
But I'll give the game a chance. The PS2 Castlevanias were actually kinda fun, if not shallow.
Kojima Productions
Yeah that word. Once that word is involved you pretty much know where things are headed.
That's the problem right there. Don't get me wrong, the Metal Gear Solid games were great, but the later ones tended to forgo game play for cinematics - something I never want to see happen to a Castlevania title.
Castlevania games have always been good at two things: solid 2D game play and a haunting atmosphere. I would be open to playing a 3D Castlevania, since each 3D iteration seems to be better than the last, though nowhere near the 2D games. However, what I absolutely DO NOT want to see in a Castlevania game is a convoluted story with preachy undertones, which is exactly what Kojima Productions seems to be good at.
Let's forgo all of this nonsense and just demand a high-resolution (1080p) 2D sprite-based Castlevania game for a home console.
Naw, I'm kidding, I've only played one Vania and one Enders game.
Don't know what the fuck to expect, but if they're are nanomachines, I will drop Hydrogen Bombs meng.
Franchises would do well to innovate, otherwise they eventually die, having stagnated completely.
if you love the crappy anime nonsensical style of story telling, 2D platformers (please, I grew tired of them when mario and sonic were the only games in town) and poor voice acting, then sure, it didnt need to be reborn, but if you wanted to see a good idea (video game based, action retelling of dracula) through the filter of sony's action classic with great, gothic graphics and an amazing cast then it certainly did.
You can keep your old 2D platforming, anime style convoluted telling to your ds castlevanias. Now it's time for the concept to be done justice.
I don't mind the comparison to God of war.
the kojima thing is a plus, and camera angles,or lack there of dont bother me.
what i'm looking for is re-vamped,pun intended,old-school bosses!
bring back the reaper, frankenstein, and king blood-sucker.
in other words, mix the NES game play roots with the next generation video and sound.i'd also be keen on some of the old music making appearences too.hopefully the crucifix/whip will be more than just another weapon with a bunch of combos.throw in some re-play value and make gabe be able to level up/advance for the coming tribulations ahead of him.
the series was the original adventure/horror game. thats what will make me have to go out and buy it.
