When Punch-Out!! for the Wii was first announced last October, I have to be honest: I was a little nervous. The game looked great, but something about it felt a little rushed and, I don’t know, empty. Then rumors started that it was going to release only on WiiWare and would be nothing more than a straight-up remake of the original game. Luckily, these rumors proved to be false.
All of these initial fears, though, were immediately alleviated once I viewed this brand new trailer.
The trailer -- which you can view after the jump -- shows off a whirlwind of nostalgia-flavored images. While the reappearance of classic characters like King Hippo and Glass Joe are sure to get your 8-bit heart pumping, it was the quick shot of Doc Louis riding his bike by the river with a pink sweatshirt clad Little Mac jogging behind him that sent a tear down this retro gamer’s cheek.
And don’t even get me started on the introduction of new character Disco Kid! One thing the Punch-Out!! series does very well is feature hilarious, well-designed characters. Here’s hoping a slew of new opponents makes an appearance in the final game.
What do you think? Does this trailer get you excited for Punch-Out!!? What do you think of the new fighter? Does he fit into the eclectic cast of Punch-Out!! characters or is he not wacky enough?
that trailer got me sooooo amped right now......can't wait for the release plus the different options for controller styles is a big plus and should be a lot of fun. Prolly no Tyson cuz he's in Fight Night , right? Grim , but i'm no less psyched for this
I thought Disco Kid was stupid, but at least we've seen new footage!
It seems it won't live up to the SNES version in terms of the roster. 90% of those boxers were new, and this Wii version is reported to only have 4 new ones. Nintendo got lazy, but I will still buy it!
Everything about that trailer was just so great. The music, the visuals, the gameplay! Oh my god, I'm so glad they didn't fuck up the gameplay! I need this now!
First, Punch-Out!! is a remake. Secondly, it's a second-party title being developed by Next Level Games (who have a very good track record for making sports titles) and published by Nintendo.
By the looks of it, Next Level seems to have all of its bases covered. If for some reason, motion control turns out to suck, then you can always use the Nes-style controls. Secondly, the game's graphics and animations look great. Third thing is that Next Level Games has done a good job of including the nostalgia factor of the previous franchise titles from the gameplay style and music down to several popular returning characters.
It would be sweet if Punch-Out!! included downloadable content in the form of new opponents to fight. Or even an online multiplayer for 2 players. Sadly, there seems to be no sign of supporting either.
Still, Im a big Punch-Out fan so I'm very much looking forward to this. Thankfully, I can enjoy the ridiculosuly awesome Excitebots while waiting for Punch-Out to be released in May.
I gotta call out the difficulty as well. One dodge, a couple swings and more then half the life bar is gone. I hope it's harder.
Other then that, it looks great. Music, is awesome, classic boxing stuff. The graphics remind me of Mario Galaxy (probably the lighting) which is a great thing.
be prepared for a reviving of the tired and true meme, nigga stole my bike (in 480p!)
anyway... it looks pretty nice and love the style it's resonating. i wasnt around when nes was out so punch out is something of an unatainable wonder to me. too bad we wont get mike tyson to beat up.
I don't like the art style, it looks like those cheap Saturday morning cartoons that are drawn in Photoshop. Also, as it's a modern day Wii title, it's going to be stupid easy. I really want to be wrong but it looks like this'll suck the big one just like Wii Mario Kart.
Looks awesome! I have one problem though. Doc's voice, it seems a bit stiff. I hope, if those are playable training sequences, that Doc doesn't shout "Left, right!" repeatedly like that.
