Next month, Sony will release a new battery for the PlayStation Portable that is said to last twice as long as the standard battery that ships with the handheld. With extended battery life, you'll no longer have to worry about your system dying during marathon sessions of watching pornogr -- uh, playing Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow

The $49.99 2200 mAh battery will ship with a new dock cover -- available in silver and black -- due to the larger physical size. This new batter will be compatible with both the original PSP (PSP 1000 series) and the newer PSP Slims.

No exactly date has been announced, but Sony has pegged mid-December as the North American release date.

I have a feeling that one of the key reasons that Sony is actually putting this out there (means the PSP-1000 Batteries work just fine with the Slim Models...) is to dilude the market where you can easily make a "Pandora's Battery", much like the PSP Slim's Batteries (unless something has changed in the last month and a half), I doubt these will be as easy to get the PSP into Service Mode with.

I don’t have a PSP, but a new battery that costs nearly a third of what the unit costs? That seems a bit ridiculous to me.

That cost seems rather high for a simple battery.
