Quantcast

A few days ago, Sierra announced Prototype, and I was less than impressed with the plot, vague as it was. Well, a cinematic trailer has been released and while it sheds a little bit of light on Prototype's storyline, it doesn't make it much more appealing.

Here's the breakdown:

1. Government creates top-secret mutant killing machine.

2. Top-secret mutant killing machine escapes and seeks revenge on the corrupt government that ruined his life.

3. ?????

4. PROTOTYPE!

That's cool and all, but hasn't this been done before? Final Fantasy VII did it better.

While the story remains, for me, uninteresting, the trailer certainly makes the gameplay seem fun and visceral. Of course, no self-respecting trailer actually shows any gameplay, so I'm just guessing. But the whole explosion-coming-out-of-the-ground looked really, really cool.

And in this age, where storytelling in games is a farce and technological advances have come to a grinding halt, explosions (albeit really cool ones) are the best we can hope for, right?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Explosion out of the ground? Those were spikes coming out which blew up the Humvee's gas tanks.

Oh, Rogue Trooper - good call.

*slaps forehead*

It was still cool though, and in the ground.

I thought it looked pretty good, assuming they implement it properly.

I like concepts like this, it's just the mind numbing thought that they usually turn into shit that I'm worried about. A lot of games where somebody says "Wouldn't it be cool if..." often have reviews that say "The idea was nice but it's not very good" which is probably why developers don't really want to do anything different.

I think this game could be pretty cool. I hate the main character's super generic design though. I swear he's wearing some Chucky Ts.

I think it looks cool. GI had a recent piece on it. Still this is not gameplay but CGI, so take with a taste of radioactive salt ...

The T-1000 and one of the Crackdown guys somehow procreated, and their offspring made it into the next Def Jam game.

There was once a time where I'd punch you in the neck and make you eat grass clippings for saying something like that. Sadly, those days are long, long departed.

You know I have to agree with mono here, that game could be called generic. I think sierra needs to change the name. I mean when I first started watching the trailer I went "Oh cool this is kind of interesting", however by the end of the trailer my excitement was no more. And prototype? Come on man the whole story reeks of cliches.

X-Men + Assassin's Creed = Prototype

Despite its lack of originality, it looks pretty darn cool.

I'm gonna have to agree with epoch. When i bought hulk ultimate destruction for my son i wasn't expecting much but as soon as i seen him playing it i stole the controller and he never got it back till i had my fill(yes i am evil).

That is why i have some hope for prototype. The way he moves around the city(new york) has been compared to crackdown only better by some publication's and i did engoy me some running around in crackdown and hulk ultimate destruction. Only time will tell i guess.
