Allegedly out this year. If no delay is announced, I'd see it pop up before Christmas as is tradition. This only applies to Japan though.

Well, we stil have 2000 Layton games that need to be bought to the West.... But I'm still wierdly sad about his retirement. I love the guy. He's got fucking class.
its better to stop at the peak of your interest and use your fame to make something new than to bleed it out and be forever the studio that makes Layton. Even when its successful moving on may very well be the best choice if you don't want to go down with the game.
I can respect the decision; better to end while you're still enjoyed than to do so after your fanbase has grown sick of it. And we got 5-6 games and a movie; Japan got even more. Can't say we were needing for content. Still, it'll be a bittersweet moment to give him the 21 Teacup Salute.
To be specific, it would be "Herschel Layton's last adventure." Layton is Level-5's most profitable original series so I doubt they'll can it completely. Luke will probably become the main character.

That's sad, but I'm glad that SOMEONE knows when to kill their popular franchises when they need to.
I'm actually happy about this, although I love this series it seems like the quality of the puzzles gets worse in every game. As it is I still haven't played the Last Specter. I respect ending it while it's still good then slowly letting the series turn to crap.
What cow said; just like the previous game was the first chronologically, this'll probably just be the last for Layton himself to be the star. For all we know Level-5 could just go back and make a game earlier in the timeline after this one and it'd just be another part of his life. Just because we have his story bookended doesn't mean anything in the middle wouldn't be viable.
@Klempky: Personally I would've liked to see another trilogy with Luke and Prof. Layton being older. We've got younger Luke, not-so-young Luke... just need one where he comes back as a teen and finishes his apprenticeship with him; I'd pay big bucks for that to happen.
Looking at the screen shots on Siliconera, Emma is in this game. So this makes me wonder, if this takes place in the middle of the chronology or if this takes place after The Unwound Future. Otherwise that's really the "last" game in the series. Either way, I'm kind of bummed about this.

I completely respect this decision. It is far better to end the series on a high note, then to continue to spout out more copies.
