New Prince of Persia to premiere at Spike VGA photo

Spike TV honcho Geoff Keighley has revealed yet another world premiere for the Spike Video Game Awards -- Ubisoft's Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands

We had previously reported that Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner had trademarked the title, along with a Ubisoft character modeler directly referencing work on a new game in the series. Our own sources had confirmed this title has been in development at Ubisoft Montreal, and would continue "The Sands of Time" trillogy in some manner.

In a press release today, Ubisoft has stated the title will "many of the fan-favorite elements" and "new gameplay innovations that gamers have come to expect from the Prince of Persia brand." Whatever that means. The game is set to release in May of 2010, likely alongside with the film.

We'll know (and see) more when the game is officially unveiled when the Spike VGAs air on December 12.

The newest game was alright, but it just wasn't the same as the three before it.

All of the Prince of Persia games are excellent in their own way, the latest not being as great but still. I really wish they would end the series before they ruin it completely.

The last Prince of Persia was much better than Warrior Within, and just as good as The Two Thrones (The Sands of Time is still the best). I'm looking forward to more of that awesome art style.

A rushed game for the sands of time series or a sequel to the new series... I'd rather have the sequel

Oh man, I can't wait to watch the 15 seconds of footage we're gonna get, right before and after a big pair of tits with legs tells me how amazing Halo is.

The only good thing about the latest game were the graphics and animations.... That's it

The story was meh, the characters lacked personalities, combat was sluggish, it was REALLY repetitive, to be able to complete platforming aspects you only needed to press 1 or 2 buttons, the ending was broken, they sold the ending separately ,etc

We sure as hell didn't get it in the last game....

really liked the art style of the latest, but nothing owns up to the original. all these games now seem more hacky slashy than figuring out where to go in a quick amount of time. i miss the platform puzzler that it used to be.

The last one was really terrible in my opinion... was more a rhythm game than a platformer and not challenging at either. Graphics were ok, nothing special mostly due to the lackluster art design in my opinion.

Sands of Time was amazing, so I hope they reach for that high-point again.

Until I was going on the same path for the FIFTEENTH TIME.

Well, it isn't much to announce now. I guess it will follow the same gamestyle, visuals and engine as the last game, so the trailer probably won't be all that shocking :P

I very recently played the last one and I dug it. I saw people's complaints but I still think it's the finest platformer franchise out there.

Besides the two before it were WAY worse.

This series to me has always been okay. I have played the first game, the third one and the PS3 "reboot" and I was never blown away by anything. Mind you I didnt play the first one until a few years after it was released. Anyways, when this game comes out Ill give it a rent. I wont buy it.

I'm sad they are abandoning the reboot. I thought it was a great game with a touching story and brilliant graphics. I can understand the hate, but there was also a lot of people who really loved the game.
Also, how can they continue the original Trilogy? The series completely returned full circle, which actually worked out better then I had hoped after seeing the monster that was PoP:WW. What could they possibly add?
That being said, if this is a modern remake of Sands of Time, I'll buy 10 copies. Sands of Time is (in my humble opinion) the best game of last generation, and remaking it would be like a dream come true. Or just release on XBLA/PSN.

I liked the originals more. Did not like the recent one, it was just stupid. Hope they stick to their guns and make something that isn't over complicated. Is it so hard to just make a puzzle game/platformer these days? The combat was terrible in the last one. When you try to spread yourself thin like that and offer a variety of gameplay elements, all of them tend to get a bit mediocre. But I pretty much expect that from Ubisoft these days. Again... I just hope the next one is worth a shit. Reinvention of the series wasn't a good move.

I wouldn't mind the aesthetics of the last game, but considering the movie's timing, I'm guessing we'll have a return to realistic graphics, which is also fine by me. There definitely needs to be an overhaul in the gameplay, though. Assassin's Creed 2 is twice as much Prince of Persia-esque than the last entry into the series.

If there is a return to the heavy puzzle-based platforming, instead of linear QTE-styled worlds, then this game is bound to be at least pretty good.

I hope everyone talking about Sands of Time being the "first one" or the "original" are just using shorthand, since there were like 5 games before that.

Prince of Persia 3D was particularly terrible.

I wanted to like the 'newest' one, but I couldn't. The platforming was sub-par, the whole not really dying thing put a damper on actually having a learning curve. I felt the ps2 trilogy was way superior in every way.

All the this had was graphics. The characters were cliche, the story wasn't as interesting as it could have been, the one on one battles were 'cool' at first but get repetitive. Also the abilities you got through the course of the game just seemed like altered abilities you previously got.

Exactly. I really, really enjoyed the art style of the newest game. The cel-shading kept it from being "uncanny" and the color palette was great. I also really liked the new Prince. He was more "Indiana Jones"-esque than the last Prince, who started to take himself a little too seriously for my taste. I wouldn't mind better gameplay, though.

I really hope not. So it seems they aren't making a sequel to the last game? Way to milk people for DLC for it either way Ubisoft. Damn I'm really starting to not like that company.

I loved the reboot because I saw it as a great foundation for a newer series that would only get better with each progressive title. I am still hoping for a sequel, but going back to the previous trilogy is a mistake. The storyline was interesting and one or two gameplay elements worked well, but other than that they were barely mediocre games at best. Ubisoft is making a huge mistake with a movie tie-in-esque title. I'll rent it and hope to be surprised, but I'm not counting on it.

Ubisoft has 2 good franchises. Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell, but chances are they're ruining SC with Conviction. I'm honestly disappointed they're not continuing the story of the latest Prince of Persia.

I hope the new game is crap and the movie is crap.

I loved the last one, but I'm happy to see where this game goes. Could even conceivably be another reboot, given the wording of the article and the hints from the interwebs. See, I don't think the idea of "continuing [the trilogy] in some manner" will necessarily entail an outright sequel, but even if it does I'm sure they'll pull something out of the bag that is, in its own way, fresh. But out of all the possibilities, I'd like to see another reboot instead of trying to continue a "closed" canon or an arguably "broken" one.

When did they say that? I was under the impression this was a sequel to the reboot, and that somehow it was going to tie into the Sands of Time storyline as well.

The old prince was really only a good character in the first game. Once they tried to turn him into a cliche "dark antihero" everything went downhill. Honestly, I really don't have much faith in a return to the old trilogy at this point.

I wasn't a fan of the last game either (outside of the fantastic art), but i would feel less skeptical if they were doing a sequel to the reboot, rather than what will most likely amount to trampling Sands of Time's memory further into the mud.

Sands of time was great. the next two just okay. And that one last year...what a piece of sh*t.
Starts off with good graphics. Then you hear him talk and think, well, at least it's the Uncharted dude. He doesn't fit for Arabian, but at least it'll be decent voice work in an American sounding way.
Then you do some platforming and things are looking good. You face a boss at the end and...it's okay. Still fun enough, Prince always sucked in the boss battles. Can roll with that.

So you're settled in wondering where the plot is, which was as cookie cutter placement for a reason to jump around as it gets, but still optimistic.
All of a sudden that level you did where you jumped and swang towards the end where a boss was is repeated, over and over till the end. Swing, beat up boss. Repeat.

I know all games are kind of doing the same thing over and over, but not like that last Prince. That was the same level over and over with one or two hurdles thrown in.
It made Assassin's Creed (one) look like Uncharted (two) in comparison to variety of environments.

Prince was a cheap game preying off nostolgia for the previous trilogy. They pasted in gameplay from the past and then didn't bother with things like level design, AI or variety of enemies.
The only new thing they did was take from ICO, and twist it into giving you the illusion you didn't die (when actually you did and her flinging you up is the reloading screen). It was pure coasting on the developers part and deserved to be the bomb in sales that it was.

So it's the safest boast in the world for them to say the next Prince will be better. The only way it could be worse is if they had the people who made Superman 64 work on it.
Besides, we have Assasins Creed these days from the same development house. Without a unique story, there's no need for another Prince game from them. You know, other than to score quick cash off the hardcore who hold cherished memories of the Sands Of Time. And even that was a game that wowed when it was new but aged badly. It's really not that good a game in 2009.

Yes, I am using short hand. I know that where more Prince Of Persia games that came out before POP: SOT. But that was the "reboot" of the series (and a good reboot at that). I believe the original POP came out on the NES in all its side scrolling action. I recently downloaded the POP: Classic over PSN and I hated it! They made the prince so clunky and awkward to move around, I can't belive anyone played the game before it was released. Oh well thank god I only spent 5 bucks on it.
