New PlayStation Home pictures photo

Did you forget about Sony's PlayStation Home? I kind of did, too. It was almost one year ago at GDC 2007 that we started to hear about the free PS3 online application/virtual world, but the Sony camp has been pretty tight-lipped ever since.

Sony's Japanese Web page has several new pictures of Home, and I have to say that things are looking pretty good. Of course, I'd love to know more about what I can do with Home, but all we can gather from these pictures now is that they've been working on the visual side of things.

The site provides nothing in the way of new details or news (yet), but I expect more to come out soon, especially seeing as how the 2008 Game Developers Conference is right around the corner. We'll be there this year to hopefully attach some new developments to these good looking pictures.

More games, less second life please!

Sure the visuals are nice. I'm starting to get really concerned that they're concentrating so freaking hard on teh pretties that they're forgetting that they're competing with a fully competent service that is XBL. XBL is simple, intuitive, and functional. If Sony can provide XBL usability with teh pretties, then great. But, if we're talking 2nd Life with a gaming as a secondary then they're entering a world of pain. MARK IT ZERO!

I'm more concerned that they're concentrating so hard on the pretties that they forgot they eventually need to release it.

Am I the only PS3 owner who thinks Home is a waste of time? I dont want some graphical Second Life.

Gimme XBox Live, but with Sony logos on it instead. That would be perfect

Home is a waste of time and only Second Life/The Sim freaks will like it.

So will we be able to walk around that dock and inside buildings? Or is that just a backdrop?

I want to know how interactive and free Home is before I buy a PS3. If I can't jump in water and swim or sail a boat then it's a scam.

Cheeburga may be onto something, They could make it some sort of mini MMO, except you level up by playing your actual games. So you could "party" with your friends and achieve quests etc.

This would actually make it relevant.

This looks fairy nice graphically, nice radiosity type lighting etc. What is its purpose though? Will you have to wander around taking ages to find anything "fun" to do. Oh PS3 owner are used to that. Ok. (sound of blueray hate machines powering up)

Home seems to me to be like a blow job from orlando bloom. I'm sure some people would love it, but it just ain't my thing.

...Yes, I am implying everyone who like home is gay.

The graphics look like CAD visualizations circa 1995.

The water shader on that top pic is pretty impressive.

Your going to be able to do a lot more in Home then party. This app is definitely NOT a waste of time and will revolutionize PSN.

Lets just hope it actually gets released sometime this decade so we can try it out and not form opinions of it based on speculation.

I'm not interested in Second Life, and I'm not interested in this. I mean, there's potential there, but I don't think it can be met. I'm not even sure how one would even meet it.

Doesn't it seem like Sony is trying to sell you what they have in the future while Microsoft is selling the here and now? Wouldn't Microsoft update Xbox live to compete with Home if it becomes a big selling point?

@vexed alex: That’s hilarious. Poor Paul Reubens.

I view Home with a lot of trepidation, but I’m going to withhold judgment (unlike the rest of you) until I actually have some hands-on time with it. Obviously, its graphics are looking fantastic, but video games take up enough of my time as it is, and I’m not sure I need a virtual world in which to while the time away. But we’ll see...eventually. What’s the current anticipated release date, “Spring 2008”?

The environs look pretty nice indeed. Good for escapists, even though the whole affair is dull. It's like Second Life without the fucked up cockmongers walking about and all the gambling. You take the unsavory stuff out of Second Life and clean up the graphics, and it's like turning bad beer into water. I'd prefer the beer for my free time/video gaming.

Also, I may get a PS3 if it meant I could log onto home and punch that smug looking bastard avatar in the face.

Leave it to Sony (and Second Life) to spend all the time and energy it takes to create a virtual world...and make it look exactly like the real one.
