New Nvidia card smokes ATI's fastest, costs way more than a PSTriple photo

ATI general managers must be hosting group hugging sessions right now, as the world's fastest new SLI video card from Nvidia was revealed today -- smoking their offerings by a sizable gap. Next-gen reports early benchmarks and pricing:

The new GPU outperforms the GeForce 8800 GTX, previously the fastest GPU, by 10-15%, and is ideal for gamers hoping to squeeze the most out of DirectX 10 titles such as the upcoming Bioshock, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (pictured), Crysis and Age of Conan.

“The definitive gaming platform is built around the fastest components available and today there is no disputing those components include the GeForce 8800 Ultra GPU and an Nvidia nForce 680i SLI-ready motherboard,” said Ujesh Desai, general manager of desktop GPUs at Nvidia.

“The graphics industry evolves extremely quickly and it is quite an achievement when you can leapfrog your own performance milestones in succession like we have done with these GeForce 8 Series GPUs,” he added.

Graphics cards equipped with the Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra will retail worldwide from May 15, with prices expected to begin at $829 (€699).

Boners, yet I've always felt that the Nvidia Ultra series was an indicator that (a) we could have overclocked their last card to do the same and (b) something way better is about to hit if we hold our coffers for six months. That is a lot of meseta for a video card, obviously. While I'm sure this will have a niche market for men with bottomless pockets (and their insatiable whiny children) I'm sure that there must be some of you hoarding a small fortune to build the ultimate Crytek appliance.

Any early adopters jumping on this? If so, please also include driving directions to your house.

Holy Shnikes! Nvidia's lost their damned minds. It was painful to pay $599 for the 8800GTX, don't want to go higher price than that.

A $200+ price jump for a 15% performance boost? If the card meets the same spec as the GTX (which I'm all but certain it does), I may as well just overclock. Hell, even the performance gap between the GTX and the GTS isn't all that huge...

Mad points to Niero for the PSO currency reference.

As long as I can use the CryEngine2 Sandbox Editor with everything maxed, the presence of a green logo or a red one is immaterial.

I saw some benchmarks earlier, and yeah, almost no difference between this and an overclocked 8800GTX

-> Lugosi: Those of us who still game on our pcs on a near daily basis would beg to differ.

I've never bought a top of the line graphics card, and unless money starts falling from the sky, I'm not going to start any time soon. Also, never trust benchmarks done by the companies themselves, they know precisely what their cards are good at and tailor the tests to suit them.

At least they had the decency to realise that euro are worth substantially more than dollars. Not looking at anyone in particular. *coughnintendosonymicrosoft* I will always love the pc for never fucking over europe.

Lol that pic is incredible! I'm pretty sure I'm gonna wait for the new ATI cards, cause I read somewhere that they're gonna be some where between 450 - 500 bucks.

Damn, I've been saving up for a killer rig for the longest time. I was originally going to buy it over xmas, but then I decided to wait till summer... no I've decided to wait until the end of summer because I'm going to be traveling a lot... With how fast technology is moving, I feel like I'm never gonna buy anything and keep waiting till the end of eternity for the next greatest thing...

Woe is me... And where is ATI btw? The 8 series came out in November... like 6-7 months ago... they better have something sweet to unveil cause right now NVIDIA's kicking ass... but I like that, its good for my stock...

Who is really stupid enough to spend $829 on a graphics card? I know there must be a market for these things and "extreme" CPUs chips, but why? Is some small performance boost worth paying practically double over other cards? NVidia even do a GeForce 8800 GTS which would be more than enough for any game in existence and cost half of this thing. Buying an ultra card seems like a total waste of money.

A graphics card should never really cost more than 30% of the total system. If you are investing more than that, you're basically throwing away money. The Geforce 8800GTS 320 MB is adequate to run the majority of games at playable framerates for the next two to three years, and it costs a third of this Ultra card. $500+ for graphics alone is beyond ludicrous.

Ask yourself how much of that money you're spending for bragging rights, and how much bragging rights are actually worth to you.

I just feel bad for dealers that get the idea to stock this crap. There's still a ton of unsold Matrox Parhelia cards out there.

A good 3D engine is supposed to scale. Please blame the bad engines and devs on crack, not the hardware manufacturers.

"PCs have too much overhead; there's always some fucking app in the background that wants to suck down some of your cpu and make your frames skip."
All it means is that you suck at handling PCs. :/
Myself, being a primarily PC gamer, I haven't had problems like those for like ages.

I need glasses and I don't like using them, so good video quality or not, I'll play a game if it's fun.
That price is stupid.
