Quantcast

Okay, that title's kind of a lie. While Gametrailers has indeed got a new showreel up for Wii and DS action game Mushroom Men, the trailer is actually another showcase for the game's production art rather than its gameplay. Sad news, yes, but I feel it's better to tell you now than have you get all disappointed, as I did, when you load the thing up.

It's not all bad news though, as if the artwork and tone of this trailer are anything go on, there are some very sick minds indeed working on this game. From the art style to the bouncy rip-off of Marilyn Manson's The Beautiful People, the whole thing just boosts my earlier impression of Tim Burton directing an Earthworm Jim game while Gerald Scarfe shovels weapons-grade narcotics down his thoat, and that my friends, can not be a bad thing in this all too often derivative gaming climate.

If the actual game design can offer up the same level of twisted wonderment as this, Mushroom Men is definitely going to find itself sitting next to No More Heroes on my "Can't wait" Wii games list. And if anyone from Red Fly Studio or Gamecock is reading, yes that back-handed compliment was my way of saying "Hurry the hell up and get some gameplay ready for viewing".

[Thanks to Joe Burling once more]

Ummm awesome. I was just thinking about Earth Worm Jim today... bizarre. Remember how you could pull yourself up by your bootstraps... ahhh the good ol' days. I'm voting for this blog for best Geek Blog on the Blogger's Choice awards. (In case you want to add a brag badge - http://www.bloggerschoiceawards.com/blogs/show/4840). Keep us updated on Mushroom heads.

This game will be the equivalent of obscure indie bands I bring up in music discussions that no one has ever heard of.

"Yes, the game design in [new game] is reminiscent of that found in Mushroom Men."
"What's Mushroom Men?"
"Oh, you've never heard of it? It's soooooo creative and original. It's like a burst of inspiration on a sunny day, mixed with [indie game] and the art style of [random artist]. [Insert continued snobbery.]"

My interest is piqued. I am, however, tired of artwork trailers. Let's see some friggin' gameplay, or at least an in-engine trailer already!

And I already thought this sounds like Marilyn Manson when I watched it. Looks very unique. I´m looking forward to it.

I think it would be funny if the point of the game was to find your way onto a pizza or pasta sauce.

Or if they used Ragu pasta sauce as gore. They could make it as splattery as they wanted and no-one could complain.
