A new trailer for upcoming Wii sidescroller Muramasa: The Demon Blade found its way onto YouTube yesterday and, naturally, we are thieving it for our own sordid purposes. After the jump, you can check out the latest footage from Marvelous Entertainment's slice 'em up.

The game looks incredibly pretty, but I'm concerned about the gameplay. When I tried it out in Tokyo last year, I was a little disappointed. It played decently, but a little blandly. Hopefully that was because everything was in Japanese and I didn't know how to do any of the cool stuff. At least it's gorgeous, and has big, red, half-naked, bearded demons. That's important.

Make sure to hit the jump and check out the trailer.

Looks like Vanillaware is going to try again with the Odin Sphere approach. Hopefully the game doesn't feature an atrocious item system like its more fantasy RPG heavy brethren.

Not to say that Odin Sphere is bad or anything....just...ya know...had issues. Still, Muramasa looks pretty good.

I can pretty much guarantee that the only reason the gameplay seemed simple when it was tried in Tokyo is because they were showcasing a very early stage and it was a demo. It reminds me of how everyone was all concerned that MadWorld would be an easy game because the first demo they had had regular enemies that just stood around for the most part. Of course they aren't going to let you see everything the game has early on.

And I prefer it that way.

Hopefully is more substance than flashy animations.

From what I understand, there are two kinds of gameplay modes. The first mode is plays like an action brawler. The second mode plays like Odin Sphere in which you have to do plenty of micromanagement. The latter is for people who want to expand on what was offered in Odin Sphere. The former is for people who were turned off by Odin Sphere's system and prefer something straightforward. Don't make the mistake of thinking one is a "casual" mode and one is not, though.

It could, in fact, be that you didn't know how to do the cool stuff! My first shot at the Sega Genesis game Pulseman went terribly for the same reason, and it wasn't until I was suddenly reminded of it (and found an English patch) years later that I realized it was much, much more than a Stupid Japanese Game That's Too Hard. You should all cross your fingers and hope that masterpiece ends up on Virtual Console one day.

...What were we talking about? Something with Odin Sphere?

Need to see some more complex gameplay elements. Looks great, though.

I say, very nice graphics and animation. Soft and distinct.

@MegaStryke:

That's really good to know, I had not heard that.

Personally, I found Odin Sphere's system very enjoyable, in the extra challenge it wove throughout the combat. It was micromanagement, but it felt organic to the gameplay.

This game makes me want a Wii. It is the only one. Hopefully it will get ported to the other systems, maybe in HD? Of course I doubt that will ever happen, but I can dream! If I ever do get a Wii, this game will be one of the top reasons. I loved Odin Sphere, but the micromanagement gave it a hell of a learning curve. The only thing that kept me slugging through it was the fantastic story. It is good to hear, as megaStrike mentioned about the brawl mode (Odin Sphere Lite?), because I'd probably play through this one that way, just no time anymore.

This and MadWorld justify my Wii's existence.

Yeah, it took me getting to the second character in Odin Sphere to stop trying to hoard items. That game really opened up a different play style to me.

Anyway, I love sprites, and I think this may be one of the best looking games I've ever seen.

One of the only games out there that has sold me based on visuals alone. And I do mean SOLD. Madworld, this, Boy and his Blob, Wario, etc... Wii developers are taking some really nice artistic approaches lately and it's very refreshing, especially all the 2d stuff. This is the antithesis to 'next-gen' and I couldn't be happier about it.
