New mode in Rock Band 2 is like Wii Music photo

In case you haven’t heard yet, you can’t lose in Wii Music. Sure, you can bob your head around and make notes higher or lower, but there are no real constraints to the game. Recently, it came to Joystiq’s attention that there is a new mode in Rock Band 2 called “No Fail Mode.” As the subtitle plainly suggests, there is no way to fail out of a song while utilizing the mode. Sounds like Wii Music, doesn’t it?

From personal experience, I think this mode is a bit ingenious. Like Jim, I’ll never be able to get over the fact that a game like Wii Music will exist, but not being able to lose in a mode for Rock Band seems like a good fit. I’ve been to a couple of parties with older, unhip adults scrambling to understand the fine art of holding a plastic guitar. After finally getting the strap appropriately around the shoulder, playing the game is a near impossibility. While, I, the trendy one in the room can master the medium difficulty, there’s no chance someone who hasn’t seen a console since the Atari is going to be able to get through a single song.

Perhaps it’s all about accessibility. What say you, Destructoid community? Is this mode a good idea? Do you think it will help launch Rock Band 2 even further into the stratosphere when it hits?

As a guy who's had to endure too many mucked-up renditions of "Slow Ride" by the hands of a clumsy adult, this is music to my damn ears.

I think it's pretty spiffy in case you want to play through a song on Expert just to see how it plays/looks without resorting to watching uptight douche bags playing the game in YouTube videos.

This is old news, btw, or at least an old rumour. I think its a great idea; ive never liked practice mode, its more fun to just play a song through. Like dragonforce at the end of gh3.

I think the no-fail-mode will be very handy for people showing the game to children (hey kid, this here's Deep Purple), non-gamers, the elderly, and people with physical limitations that might prevent normal play (weak grip from a stroke, lack of feet, that kinda thing).

Of course, as far as Mr Sadistic's comment goes, you can alway go to practice for that. But the No Fail Mode will allow that kinda fun in multiplayer - and having watched more than a few 50+ non-gamers try the game, I think it will be handy indeed.

I'm glad for it, now I can play without worrying about whether or not I should save my star power for a tricky part or use it to help some one that's losing.

I've been saying that this should be a necessity since day one, primarily for the reasons cited in the blog post. No Fail is a much nicer and more satisfying alternative to practice mode.

This is decent. I can barely manage medium, so this will be good for the times that I just want to relax and not worry about failing. At least I won't be playing "Yankee Doodle."

This is nothing like WiiMusic, Brad. "No Fail Mode" is simply what it sounds like: in band play, a player can completely suck it up -- missing notes left and right -- and the band will not fail out. The notes they are missing are not played, and the performance suffers, but the band does not.

This would actually be fun in Rock Band. I'd like to play Paramore with all my friends without failing for a few hours.

I think a No Fail Mode is ok as long as the game does not loose it meat because of it. I have played at friends houses and have a little kid want to play and they are smart enough to know they don't have a controller plugged in but they can't pass a song and its no fun you the other people that just want to finish a song. The challenge is still their for the other people playing.

Sounds a good option when you are playing with people that haven“t touched a plastic instrument in their lives.

A fine addition that will come in handy when playing with the decrepit or uninitiated.

YES! So now my girlfriend can't bitch that we'll fail a song and I won't have to force her to the kitchen (though she'll eventually go there, AMIRITE?)! MUAHAHAHAHA!

On a serious note: I'm going to be a party hit when I walk in with this game.

I think this is a great idea. I've been with a group of friends playing Rock Band before and we've had the problem where people could handle certain songs on medium difficulty, but not others...but they didn't want to go back to easy difficulty. This creates a problem when you can hold your own, but have to avoid a song altogether because someone else doesn't want to go one level down to ensure everyone wins.

No fail mode? like Wii music? Why would they put that into the game if NO ONE LIKES IT? amirite?

This is an excellent idea. First, because it's optional. And second, it makes it great for parties.

I know there's a lot of songs that I can play on Expert drums, but then there's just one section where I'll do terrible. With this mode, my friends don't have to worry about conserving their Overdrive to save me, and we can have a lot better time with it. If you're able to turn it on pre-song or something, that would be best. If it's something where you have to turn it on from the main menu, I probably won't use it as much.

This mode is pretty good for practicing stuff. I'm new to this kind of games, but i'm basicly bored with medium on guitar hero, but not completly good to pass all the songs on hard or expert, so i put this no fail mode and it's helped me to get much better, and as it doesn't work on career mode nor online, it's not a handicap for the meaty part of the game.

I just hope the game makes it clear how much you suck and how fast you would have failed it to encourage people to play the real thing once they have mastered the no fail mode.

A great option to have. At the pool where I lifeguard, we had a fun camp for the past two weeks, and on each Friday, I usually bring in Rock Band. I figured some kids knew it, and others could surely manage, but you would not believe how fast some kids failed out of even easy songs. This would help a lot.

So Nintendo has no fail game where you just flail around like a fool and it's idiotic, Rock Band puts a flail around like a fool mode in game and it's a great idea. Just wanted to make sure I'm following the story here.

It's certainly a great idea for those who don't play games regularly. Most of my friends don't play at all, and when they play RB or GH, they feel like they're "bringing me down."

Takes a lot of me trying to talk them into continuing to play. Besides, when they do fail, most of them decide to quit. So, a no fail mode would be great.

Finally! I've been hoping for this. Now when my mom plays she won't fail out everytime.

More importantly-- when I sing (no matter what song or difficulty), I won't fail!

Sometimes you just gotta rock.

@Everyone who thinks it's just like Wii Music

The difference is this; "real" players can still play their challenges on Hard and Expert, but they can also simply have fun with friends who play on Easy and still fail. See what I'm getting at? If not, there's a nice shiny bottle of shotgun mouthwash waiting for ya. =D

This is a great idea i was playing rockband at a friends party the other day and of course the bastard little kids (under 10) want to join in and play and you can't tell them no because you'd look like an ass (which i am) so you have to deal with failing songs after about 30 seconds until they get tired of playing (which doesn't happen) or you stop playing long enough for them to lose interest....in short No Fail Mode ftw

Namelessted at 07/18/2008 16:58
Please do not say that Rock Band is like Wii Music in any way, ever. No Fail Mode is a good thing, Guitar Hero had it through a button input sequence. A mode like this makes sense. Never talk about the similarities of Wii Music and Rock Band because they do not exist.
