After more than a year in production (and after a fair share of Destructoid posts about it), the fan remake of underrated Game Boy game Metroid II: Return of Samus is nearing completion. Now, before you go clicking the jump and checking out the recently released third trailer for the game, I have to issue a warning: If you are a retro Metroid fan (and especially if you love Metroid II and Super Metroid), this trailer may give you a stroke.
I don’t even know where to start. Shall we talk about the gorgeous, SNES-era graphics? The stunning animation? The music? Hopefully the left side of your face doesn’t go numb after viewing. If you can still type, sound off in the comments with your thoughts. Could this be one of the most beautiful Metroid games ever? I say most definitely yes! Let’s just hope Nintendo and its highly paid lawyers don’t freak out too much.
And, for the record, “getting the fish sweats” is a very good thing. Just ask all the Destructoid editors after our ridiculous (and delicious!) sushi binge right before E3.
Chad Concelmo is Destructoid's features editor. He loves hanging out with awesome people. That's why Destructoid makes him so happy, since it is full of THE MOST AWESOME PEOPLE OF ALL TIME! Also, dolphins.

Wasn't there another remake/game being made called Metroid:SR388? I wonder what happened to that one...Still, the game does look pretty good, but for some reason the Metroids don't look nearly as intimidating as their old Gameboy Counterparts. Meh, I'll guess I'll just have to see the finished product, I suppose.
@Mighty Pinto,
Yeah, the SR388 remake looked amazing as well. It seems that one may have fizzled out, though (or Nintendo got a hold of it); I haven't heard much about it as of late. :)
Wow so awesome, its really great that there are people out there who are so talented! Chad i didnt have a stroke, but there are feces everywhere in my office, its really gross.
"This and the new 2.5D Mega Man project are putting the originals to shame."
This.

"Nintendo needs to buy this and put it on Wii Ware"
This. Why don't companies do stuff like that? They could probably buy the whole project for 100,000, then sell it worldwide via digital distribution. Only 10,000 $10 purchases needed to break even, you help one of your biggest fans, and you gain a lot of hardcore cred.
Thats funny, I was just wondering to myself how far this had come along since I last heard about it. The news about 'Metroid M' or whatever the fuck it is, just made me want more 2D Metroid. Glad to see this is still very much alive.
When has Nintendo ever squashed a fan project like this? Other that the re-texturing of Brawl characters (which really doesn't compare to this case), Nintendo plays nice with the fans. It let Mother 3 get that translation. Starmen.net is still around, right? Exactly.
To be coupled with Mega's statement:
It's a widely known fact Nintendo NEVER squashes fan projects. While they'll openly squash Bob's game (lawl), fan made projects are never a problem for them.
Although I'm still excited, unfortunately this wasn't the SR388 remake that was mentioned earlier. This game seems to have the gameplay of the GBA Metroids, which while I did enjoy them, I thought the control was way too finicky and "jumpy" compared to the more controlled Super Metroid.
Still, this looks sweet. Hopefully the creepy ambience is still maintained when you're outside those temple areas...this game nailed creepy ambience pretty damn well for a Gameboy title from way back when.
Wow! Thats very, very impressive, props to the creators. They must be proud of what theyve done, what an achievement. Hopefully Nintendo won`t throw a spanner in the works.

When is this coming out?! The anticipation is immense on all levels!
i'm excited for this project, however SR388 was looking a lot better IMO. i pray it's still alive.

That's why I typed it really quietly. Shhhhh ... :)
Amazing.
Fish sweats.
Gross.
So this is to M2 as Zero Mission was to the first Metroid, right? Looking good.
