Yup, “retromazing.” It’s the new word I just made up. I hope you like it.

There are a surprising amount of people out there that are upset with the 8-bit look of upcoming WiiWare title Mega Man 9. I truly don’t understand this negative reaction. While other companies are either releasing upgraded versions of old games or moving old franchises into the new millennium of technology, Capcom took a major risk and created an original, nostalgic work of art that is in every way an 8-bit game. In my humble opinion, Mega Man 9 is an incredibly brave creation and I applaud Capcom for its risky, artistic decision.

And to you naysayers: if the above trailer does not change your mind about Mega Man 9, nothing will. When I watched it I was filled with so many wonderful memories of being a child, looking in Nintendo Power, and seeing images of an upcoming NES game for the first time. Do you remember the first time you saw the giant robot fish from the Bubble Man stage in Mega Man 2? That is how I just felt when I saw the big mechanical elephant.

And speaking of Mega Man 2 ... according to IGN (where this exclusive trailer came from), NES classics Mega Man 1 and Mega Man 2 are now confirmed for release on the Virtual Console soon. It’s a great day for Mega Man fans!

What do you think? Is this trailer absolutely gorgeous or what? Are you as impressed as I am with the bold new direction Capcom is taking this series?

Yeah... did the article writer not see that it's going to all three services? Oh well.

Anyways, I'm downloading it on WiiWare. It just feels wrong on anything else to me. Just me, probably.

While this trailer made me hard, the best part about it was the PLAYSTATION Network and XBOX Live Arcade logos at the end!

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Day. Fucking. One.

Or you just don't like Megaman ;) I have to admit though, despite my distaste for the blue bomber, this does look pretty cool. I'll probably end up buying it, just so that series I love will get the same awesome treatment :)

@Chad, lazy people, thats who. Talk about going backwards.

the new MegaMan games might not have been all that good, but going back to making an NES game is a step in the wrong direction. What they should do is make a new game, with an old style feel. Use high-res textures, make the controls updated to they actually work but give it that classic feel. Making an 8-bit game just seem lazy to me.

Oh my god, oh my god, I will officially buy this game the instant it goes live. I just wish Mega Man 1, 2, and 3 were confirmed to be coming to the VC soon.

The music at the end (presumably the game's title screen music) almost brought a tear to my eye.

I like Mega Man 8 too, but I'd like it even more in 8-bit. The only Mega Man game I don't enjoy that much is Mega Man 4, and even that one has stuff about it I like. Toad Man's ass shaking ways still give me a smile even to this day.

But more to the point, the reasons I'd want Mega Man 7, 8, and Mega Man and Bass in 8-bit are purely cosmetic. 8-Bit is just the right look for the character, as 16-bit is the right look for Mega Man X, 3D for Mega Man Volnutt, 32-Bit for all the GBA and DS iterations of the character, etc, etc.

Just look at the fan made 8-bit Mega Man 7. Isn't it just more...right?

This kinda makes me wish games were still like this.

Still a little disappointed its not 16-bit styled. Probably because my first Megaman was Megaman 7. Also disappointed that it appears the story won't fill in the gap between the classic series and the X series(though I hope i'm proven wrong here).

That being said, the gameplay bits that were shown were freaking fantastic. The level design seems reminicent of the older games...but with new gimmicks to freshen it up. Is that a "Dark" Megaman I see at 1:08 in that trailer? Oh, and, 1:13, hard jump much?

Here's hoping the final product lives up to the rest of the series.

I have seen the light.

I have been somewhat of a naysayer with regard to this latest installment of the Mega Man series, but this trailer made this game look... well, as Chad so perfectly put it, retrotastic. The game doesn't look cheap or thrown together. It looks finely tuned, and more importantly, fun!

I sincerely apologize for my previous comments about this game.

I'll be buying this. I suppose the only question is should I get it for WiiWare or XBLA. Thoughts? :)

I do love in the trailer though... The sprites for Mega Man 1-6 are EXACTLY the same, then quite the difference in 7, return to form but all polished up for 8, then back to the original sprites for 9. ^_^

To the people that think it's lazy or a step backwards:

Is it lazy for new bands to go for a lo-fi route and record music using older equipment? Is it lazy for a director to do a film in black and white? Or with only in camera effects? Or what about animators who choose to do hand drawn animation instead of CGI? Are they lazy too?

I don't understand this concept that these people are lazy or somehow don't work as hard simply because they aren't being cutting edge. Have we really become that jaded with the whole "New and Improved" thing that we can't appreciate the finer points and techniques of the past?

As video game design gets older and the art form really develops, this kind of stuff is going to happen more and more. It's in the nature of artists to explore styles that have previously been established.

I've never played any mega man game EVER, I never even owned an NES. I've been playing 3D platformer/FPS/Driving etc. all my life. But I'm finding myself WANTING this. The strange thing is, if they had released it as 3D high resolution extravaganza, I doubt I would have even considered getting it. But the 8-bitness of it...I don't know...I love it. This is the first time I'm hearing this will be out on the PSN, meaning this is my day one. Of course, there'll be no nostalgia when I play, but hopefully the unfamiliar retro run and gun gameplay will make up for that.

I also want to tip my hat to Capcom. Deciding to return to the original mega man design was incredibly brave of them, especially when the target consumer is the racist 12-year old who's only knowledge of video games is Halo and GTA, and Madden. It reminds me of The Behemoth deciding to keep Alien Hominid 2D and arcade-y when it jumped from flash to consoles.

I'll jump on board the "very cool" train. When I first heard of this, I was picturing high-res, spritey shininess, and was, admittedly, a little disappointed at first blush. HOWEVER, seeing it in action again, now, and having really rallied to the Virtual Console since I got my Wii a couple weeks ago, I am smitten.

I do "get" the naysayers, but they weren't around to shed a tear at the end of Mega Man 2. They were crying for their bottles while I was watching the season's change. *shiver* So...good.

Now I have to decide if I want to buy it on Wiiware where I can play with the Wii remote that I like better for NES games than even the original controller or PS3 where the DRM-scheme is vastly more open. I can't handle these choices!

I don't find the 8-bit look to be lazy on the developer's part. It's a convenient solution for what would be the first all-console digital download: small file size and huge nostalgia factor

Imagine if instead we got a graphically gimped MM9, due to the limitations of the online services. THEN you'd all be cryin'

Right, you negative people stop whinging. Its a DL game, it s going to cost peanuts. Its not like they will be trying to charge to £30 for this. I'm not a Megaman fan but I like that they've gone to the effort to make it 8-bit. It is pandering to nostalga a bit but its a bit of fun for God's sake.

@jonathan holmes: i actually didnt too much care for mega mans 8-bit sprite. people always freak out when i say this, but i never liked the nes' graphics - even when it was the only console I owned. i agree that mega man just didnt look right in 7 and 8, altough i didnt play much of either, i own 8 and was put off by the way it looked. it just didnt feel like mega man to me. but i think mega mans genesis sprite was amazing, and would have loved to have seen 9 look like that. (youtube rockman mega world.. im too lazy to post a vid)

i remember renting mega man 3, and although i found it entertaining, the only lasting impression it made was the music (best soundtrack ever). personally, id opt for a "proper" sequel with sprites that looked like wario's new wii game, but as i said, the genesis sprites would do.

Well, Im a naysayer, but not because of the graphics. I think we're romancing a bit about later Mega Man here. The first three games were brilliant in every aspect. Each title always innovated itself with new features, the gameplay was smooth, the music was great and the level design was awesome. But I honestly stopped caring after the 4th game because it seemed to lose in production quality. From watching this video, the music has certainly not improved and levels look bland and boring.

But Im also a bit old and grumpy. Going back to the games I used to play as a kid doesn't work. They just don't seem to have the flair as when I first played them.

I'd go for a new 16-Bit Mega Man X9, and day of the week, but I stand by my belief that OG Mega Man's character is integrally linked to the 8-bit sprite. I agree with Shouryuken that the Wily Wars Mega Man was the best 16-bit Mega Man, but that's because like with the Super Mario All Stars remakes, they had to keep Mega Man's sprite the pretty much the same as the 8-Bit one in terms of size and proportion.

I'd go for a jazzed up version of the 8-Bit sprite as well, like this one.

But I'm more than satisfied with the straight 8-Bit look too.
