Yup, “retromazing.” It’s the new word I just made up. I hope you like it.

There are a surprising amount of people out there that are upset with the 8-bit look of upcoming WiiWare title Mega Man 9. I truly don’t understand this negative reaction. While other companies are either releasing upgraded versions of old games or moving old franchises into the new millennium of technology, Capcom took a major risk and created an original, nostalgic work of art that is in every way an 8-bit game. In my humble opinion, Mega Man 9 is an incredibly brave creation and I applaud Capcom for its risky, artistic decision.

And to you naysayers: if the above trailer does not change your mind about Mega Man 9, nothing will. When I watched it I was filled with so many wonderful memories of being a child, looking in Nintendo Power, and seeing images of an upcoming NES game for the first time. Do you remember the first time you saw the giant robot fish from the Bubble Man stage in Mega Man 2? That is how I just felt when I saw the big mechanical elephant.

And speaking of Mega Man 2 ... according to IGN (where this exclusive trailer came from), NES classics Mega Man 1 and Mega Man 2 are now confirmed for release on the Virtual Console soon. It’s a great day for Mega Man fans!

What do you think? Is this trailer absolutely gorgeous or what? Are you as impressed as I am with the bold new direction Capcom is taking this series?

I was worried that it was essentially going to be a ROM hack. You know, lots of reused concepts, lots of reused assets, etc.

This is clearly not a ROM hack. This is truly awesome.

You nailed it Chad, retromazing is the perfect word for this.

@Robotfart:

I think Mega Man is on VC in europe but not anywhere else. It will be nice to see MM2 on there. All they need is Mega Man 3 and I'll be happy

I didn't get a chance to write it in my rushed excitement to get this up ASAP, but you guys HAVE to read the article on IGN (I linked to it in the post). It confirms so many amazing things about Mega Man 9: leaderboards, XBLA/PSN support, story details, etc.

It is absolutely incredible. :)

In conjunction to penis hardness, this continues to build my liking for Capcom. Ever since I heard about the Phoenix Wright series I've been seeing a lot of innovation from Capcom (and Nintendo as well of course) and they've been doing some great work and branching off from the norm while still raking in tonnes of cash. The Wii and DS might get the most puerile of shovelware and the least polished multi-platform games but then you get moments of greatness like this where they show that someone is actually listening to gamers that want to see modern 2-d games and new (or old in this case) things aside from the next Halo.

Qraze, its probably because you are 12.

If they don't put this on an nes cart, I know who will.

I'm going to be honest though, watch the hd trailer. This isn't 8-bit. More than likely, this is just drawn to look 8-bit.

The first clue is the logo, which is clearly to high to be 8-bit.

Secondly, its not programmed on nes software, because there is no flicker on any of the enemies.

Not only that, there is tons going on each screen, and a lot of colors at the same time. Kirby pushed the nes to the max, and the color and animation on this blows that away.

So sorry folks, no NES cart of MM9.

SNES cart maybe.
free touch's Avatar - Comment posted on 07/10/2008 20:08

er... not that 12 is a bad thing, but you are obviously trolling hard seeing your first comment is about a 3d megaman. when all megaman fans know the 3d games are like the red-headed step-children of the megaman universe. That, and since you think the 3d games are awesome, you clearly weren't around to crack open a fresh MM2 and play it day in and day out for years.

There is good, there is great, and then there is Mega Man 9.

The only thing that could make me happier is if Capcom remade Mega Man 7 and 8 in 8-bit form as well. Then we would truly have "everlasting peace".

Hey Holmes: to be honest, I hold MM8 up there with the top of the games, new graphics and all.

I'm pretty sure it holds my number 3 spot, with the others being:

1: Mega Man 2
2: Mega Man V (Gameboy)
3: Mega Man 8
4: Rockman & Forte

this will show kids today that retro games are fun and awesome, and show them the difficulty of games that we played back in the day is so much higher then the games of today.

it was more about the fire breathing wolves for me.

but the giant fish still rock

I guess they are both really awesome in that "i just got home from school with the latest issue of nintendo power that my super rich friend let me borrow, and i'm NOT unlocking the bathroom door till i'm done!" kinda way.

Dude, if you're not shitting yourself over this, you're 15 years old or younger or just not a real gamer.

This is so awesome. I hope so many people buy it and send a good strong message to the developers out there (as mentioned with Konami taking notice for Castlevania).

This game looks GOOD. Looks hard too. And I'm ready for it.
