We've heard of multiple developers working on a game before, but it's not often that we hear a game will use two different engines. That's the case with the upcoming Medal of Honor. The official Medal of HonorTwitter account (along with a couple of other Twitter accounts from EA employees) state that the single-player portion of Medal of Honor will use a "heavily-modified Unreal 3 Engine" while the multiplayer will use DICE's Frostbite engine.
Furthermore, Blue's News goes on to point out this IGN UK preview where DICE President Patrick Bach talks about the expected similarities between Bad Company 2 and Medal of Honor's multiplayer: "I think it would be hard to not have anything feed in [from Battlefield]. We're using the Frostbite engine and it's amazing to see how it can build a completely different experience."
Not too sure how I feel about this. Whether it's intended or not, single-player usually prepares a player for multiplayer. Having two different engines seems like it will be counterproductive to the overall experience that Medal of Honor will provide.
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

So the two components will have different graphics, controls etc? If that's so, then screw this decision. Granted, I'll probably forget about the MP immediately anyway.
And why Unreal 3 engine? Bah, I'll be waiting for textures to load two hours into the game.
@M-A yes the beard engine white (frost bite + brown "YES UNREAL YOUR ENGINE IS NOW ASSOCIATED WITH THE COLOR BROWN" = beard )but seriously why not source and frostbite that would be a very interesting mix.
Pretty sure the two modes will control the same. Their engine for BF is already tested on the MP side, so I see the rationale for doing this. Is this texture loading thing with Unreal 3 a problem on all platforms?
Something about this does not sit well with me at all. This could easily be a hugely botched project. Using 2 engines would basically double the development time and that will probably mean the game will be unfinished and rough around the edges in both single and multiplayer.

probably
however killzones 2 singleplayer did nothing to prepare you for the multiplayer am i right?
Yo dawg, I heard you like engines so we put an engine in your engine so you can blow up buildings in multiplayer while you mull over the fact that in single player you can't because U3 engine is shit.
I think this is a good idea to have two different engines, but not for this title. The advantages to having two separate engines would obviously be for scaling issues. Multiplayer is traditional larger in scale and would benefit from a specific engine for large environments and large amounts of players. The single player would benefit from an engine that can provide more detail and personal experience.
Having said all that, I think doing it for Medal of Honor is a bad idea. Mainly because the multiplayer would be directly competing with another EA title using the same engine: Bad Company 2. I'd be worried that the two games would end up having a very similar multiplayer experience, since they're both in the same genre. Another smaller issue would be getting the gameplay to match in both engines. If they tweak it very carefully, I'm sure they could get the engines to match fairly well, but there will always be differences in the behavior of the physics engines, graphics, etc. If the gameplay isn't consistent across engines, I think it will fail.
oh wow a series known for being FPS is a fps, hbk? FUCK ME, IM SHOCKED RIGHT NOW.
OK calm now, that we have finally established the game's genre.
Battlefield Bad Company is one of the few multiplayer games I have lost weeks, if not months to (left 4 dead and its sequel being the only others). Im mainly a single player game, but if this can blend the amazing BFBC multiplayer with a good to great single player, what's not to like?
I'm certainly more behind this than I am the trend for slapping on MP to everything nowadays regardless if it needs or wants it (Bioshock, Dead Space, looking at YOU)
I cant decide if i dont like this because its weird and unusual, or because there is something wrong with it. As long as the single player campaign doesnt look like its carved out of stone (as many Unreal3 engine games do). Also i hope the two parts dont feel completely diffent to play.
Aren't DICE supposed to do the MP part? Better they use the same engine they've been using lately tbh. And most of art assets are done in software that can be exported to all kinds of game engines. Imho they'll prolly use less time developing the MP portion of the game, then if they used UnrealEngine3...
This is a terrible fucking idea. The Unreal campaign isn't so much a problem with me but changing it up with Frostbite's blocky, laggy, and relatively meh like engine for the multiplayer? Either commit to a standard engine and make the experience one that CONGEALS to one another instead of trying to find the best engine for the best separate experience. To reiterate, the single-player helps to set the player up for a great multiplayer experience..
Meh, I'll probably still be playing MAG and BFBC2 anyway.
Finally some good shooters!
Even if this is a completely ridicutarded idea (I doubt it, those guys know what they're doing a little bit better than we do) it's still going to be better than Call of knifey: Glitch Borefare 2.
Two engines is unheard of, infact I think this is a first time for such an endevour. However, I doubt its anything to worry about. EA are looking to handle MoH is a similar way to how they are handling Bioshock 2, by spreading the development of both part of the game, between two teams. This is will hopefully get the game done quickly, because EA are no doubt keen to beat MW3 to the end of 2010 punch bowl.
Frankly, EA have a good chance of topping MW2, and as the plot thickens like gravy, us gamers stand to win big again, either way.
I'd still like to see other conflicts covered though, because the middle east setting is becoming really old, We need something more.
So single player is going to be bad ass graphically and single player is going to look like shit. I swear BF:BC looks like junk and so did the second one. Main reason I didn't get it, just to jaggy and unpolished looking.
Yes this has happened before. The last Wolfenstein game for example used two engines. Single player used a modified Quake 4 engine and multiplayer used the ETQW engine.
I donīt have any worries whatsoever about Frostbite, Bad Company multiplayer was awesome.
Anyways, Iīm not sure if having two engines is a problem as far as SP preparing you for MP goes. As long as the controls are mapped out to the same buttons, I canīt see how itīd be a problem...
Doesn't this mean that EA has to buy the rights to both engines to use in only one game? Wouldn't this be a hugely expensive investment? - I can see the EA accountants sweating over the calculators right now - unless EA already owns the rights to the frostbite engine...colour me confused.

Hello Sir / Ma'am. With the use of two different engines Medal of Honor will be more enjoyable to play than any other video games. I can't wait to try it on my own. Thanks for this update.

That video was pretty cool though, they have my attention.

not sure right now if this a good or bad thing...
Trailer: awesome.
I'm torn.
^THIS
I'm just more really really bloody confused as to why.
Plus I'm going to be on BFBC2 anyway too much to bother.
Not sure about PC, but I can confirm it is both on 360 and PS3.
Why not just use Frostbite for both? It looks amazing! (And this is coming from a HUGE Gears of War fan.)
