I realize that the amount of great games landing next month is very, very high, but in all honesty I would gladly sacrifice them all in order to get my hands on New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Mario fanboy? Yes, unabashedly, but I don't really have a reason not to be as far as the main games in the series go (and the majority of his spin-off titles). However, this feeling is not just based on my love of plumbing brothers, there's video proof that fanatical devotion is warranted.
Below you can check out some gameplay of the new ice flower item, which would be cool normally, but is now awesome because it's being used to in an underwater level where the fish get turned into floating blocks off ice that Mario can use as platforms. I can't even begin to describe the myriad of platforming possibilities this opens up, but I can wonder why it took so long to bring out the obvious counter to the fire flower. Also below the jump is the opening "cinematic" for the game. I put cinematic in quotes because it's 57 seconds long. However, it's perfect. In just 57 seconds the entire plot of the game (Spoiler: Peach is kidnapped!) and the reason why there are all these power up items laying around the world are revealed. It's a bit of retrotastic plot description that must be loved.

Wgere's the vid? Kinda cruel, talk about how epic the game/video is then don't post video. Don't you know anyhting about how it works here @ Dtoid? *gets back on high horse, rides back to front page*
Swing your arms from side to side , come on its time to go do the Mario.
Take one step and then again. Lets do the Mar-e-o all together now...
Come on now. Just like that.
LittleBigPlanet dissolves any real need for this game to exist. You can call that a fanboy statement all you want, but when people are acting like this game is better than the other, despite lacking online play, a coherent plot, customisable character, a level editor, and the most important thing, Stephen Fry, it shows that brand overpowers innovation and quality, and we see why games these days are mainly sequels.
^
Now if only the community could churn out something decent with those tools and there were more systems at play than just the clumsy physics engine...
Also, there better be a sh*tload of content here because they've blatantly ripped almost all the graphical assets from NSMBDS.
LBP is kind of a joke in my opinion. The game is too slow paced, and doesn't have the tight controls that say, a Mario, or 2d Sonic games have. It doesn't matter how cool the levels are in LBP, the fact remains that nothing can really be done with it since the core gameplay itself isn't very good.
Little Big Planet is good but as a platformer is is very different from Mario. Moving around is slow and feels sluggish while in 2D Mario games everything is fluid and most of the time it's possible to go from start to finish in a level without even stopping moving. There is also all the classic mario sounds and enemies that make the games fun and memorable. Sure there is no story or online play but why would it need it? If I want to play LBP I'll boot my PS3. I don't need my Mario games to copy LBP. Both games are good, and focus on different things.
What I don't like of this new Mario game is the multiplayer aspect. It seems to only add chaos instead of fun gameplay. I'll be playing this one solo.
Ah yes, the classic appeal to position and appeal to the past logical falacies. If you can show me any Nintendo designed levels as good as Medusas Castle, I'll admit there is a reason for this. And a physics based platformer means physics based movement, so platforming comes through more naturally. But why bother with all that? Why should Mario have to actually update and grow?
Uh, no, it isn't a level from New Super Mario Bros DS. At all. Try again.
Also, Indigo, you're reeeeeally fooling yourself hardcore. Four out of your five points are meaningless and online play isn't required at all. Unless you have no friends. Then I just feel sorry for you and more than likely, you don't own a Wii in the first place so you shouldn't care at all anyway, making this entire argument of yours yes, a fanboy argument.
Haha try again? I love you dismissive guys. The coolest kids in school ;)
On a separate note, I think sometimes people get a little too caught up in this exaggerated enthusiasm business and really start believing they are psyched for the same old games. Then again, people are usually just fickle.
I apologize for the lack of videos guys. Late night posting gone awry. As for the ice flower I completely forgot about it in Galaxy, which makes me a bad person.
I need this and left 4 dead 2. I'd rather the went with a style different from the DS game but it's only a small gripe.
"But why bother with all that? Why should Mario have to actually update and grow?"
Go play mario galaxy then? People like 2D mario games, get over it stop trying to pick fights because your butt hurt people aren't talking about little big planet.
Oh the video's here now. I saw this ages ago but only checked for the video now so I can't believe I just dismissed this for so long. I can't wait to play this damn game.
@Matthew Razak:I wouldn't blame you. It wasn't put to half as good use as I would've liked to see. On the other hand, I coul've played through both Mario and Luigi's "campaigns" so intoxicated with glee and joy that the whole experience melted in a huge chocolate cake-tasted orgasm whose intricacies escape evaluation.
@Indigo Dingo
Pick any level in Super Mario World or Mario 3. There you go.
Seriously, get the PS3 troll out of here. LBP will never, ever, overtake Mario. It's a completely different pacing then Mario is, and the experience is fundamentally different. When you play Mario, you are playing MARIO, the game you grew up with and love. When you play LBP, it's LBP. Still fun, but much different (and slower).
It's like comparing a 1990 bottle of wine with a 1950 bottle. Yes, the 1990 is newer, maybe has a flashier label, and you could argue it was made with better grapes or something, but the 1950 will ALWAYS taste better.
Stop making yourself look bad. Just say "Hey guys, I think I misspoke. What I meant to say was, I prefer Little Big Planet to Super Mario Bros Wii, but you're right, they are different games and both deserve to exist. Even the creators of Little Big Planet would say so. Both can find a place in our market. In fact, fans of NSMB Wii may want to try out LBP, because they are different enough to warrant owning both games."
You don't even have to mention that you haven't played New Super Mario Bros. Wii yeat, and therefore shouldn't even be talking about how good the game is. Just take a "live and let live" attitude, and you'll be OK.
"LittleBigPlanet dissolves any real need for this game to exist."
Oh please! LBP isn't even in the same league as any "main story" Mario game, at alone enough to dissolve NSMB Wii existence. LBP was nothing more than a cool novelty, that faded out months after it released. Can you say the same about NSMB Wii? No you can't, because it will be selling to millions of new people for many years to come. All you have to do is look to NSMB on the DS for proof.
Myriad of possibilities? Don't you mean, the one possibility of freezing enemies and using them as platforms? This isn't the second coming of platforming, Razak.
Phenomenal. That intro is perfect, simple and sweet! And the Koopa Kids are back! Yes! =)
This game may not revolutionize platform gaming, but got damn is it going to be retro exciting fun!
Can't wait!
Also, love how Toad gathers together the new power-ups and cannons them into the world.
I still feel like Nintendo can put together some pretty awesome games when they really want to. Its just sad that they haven't wanted to lately since its so much easier to throw together basic junk and still make money.

Erm, Mario Galaxy? (Though one could THEN one wonder why it took until 2007 to bring out the obvious counter to the fire flower.)
WTF RAZAK. I NEVER WOULDA GUESSED
Because if its not, Im pumped beyond all reason for when you put it up.
Destructoid.. they lied to me.. ;_;
Take one step and then again. Lets do the Mar-e-o all together now...

Oh, now I made myself sad...
You mean they get paid to say games are good and which ones are bad?! SHOCKER

Give me tight Mario controls and Nintendo designed levels over floaty jumping and community designed crap any day.

LittleBigPlanet and Mario aren't nearly as similar as you think they are.
Don't remember seeing those two Toads or anywhere in the DS version...

And hell yes, multiplayer sidescrolling Mario.

't really feel epic... all seemed pretty standard, aside from the new power ups... and more fish then you usually see...
Mario is a different animal completely, even though they are both classified as "momentum based platformers."
