New Mafia II screenshots are Mob-tastic photo

2K Games has announced that Mafia II, the sequel to the hit 1930s gangster simulator, will be heading to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Games For Windows platforms. Now hold on just a minute -- didn't we know that already? In any case, there are new screens to accompany this "announcement."

First and foremost, 2K Czech gets points in my book for giving one of its characters an eyepatch. How badass is that? On a slightly more serious note, the buildings and cars are looking top-notch for sure, but why does everyone need to have such shiny skin?

Nitpicking aside, Mafia II looks to have some potential, so consider putting it on your radar.

Never heard of this title but it does look pretty cool. I might have to keep an eye out to see what develops.

Looks okay to me. I never liked the first one, but who knows how this will turn out...

Sorry, GTA's already got this genre covered for the year.

The first was a bit rough around the edges, but at its core it was a pretty fun play through. Not enough shoot outs or "hits" for me though. I wanted to light up the town Dick Tracy style with my tommy gun but I only got to do that about half the time. The other half I was driving... a lot. Very slowly mind you.

It's cause they're greasy eye-talians.

The driving in the first game could be brutal with those historically accurate 2 hp cars.

I hated the first Mafia game. The save restriction and effects of failing a mission were too overboard and completely ruined my fun with the title. It didn't help you couldn't change the radio station or choose music, and the routes through the city were pretty linear depending on where you wanted to go, so redoing a mission if you fucked up somewhere meant a good 10-15 minutes of repetitiveness per failure.

I like the look of that screenshot, graphically. The matte softness of the cloth objects works well. The face of the guy holding the gun looks static and expressionless, though. In other words, bad.

Is that Sean Penn with the eyepatch?
Anyway, I played the first Mafia on PS2..
..and I remember taking a dump all over it cause I didn't like it.

Mafia was a great game, with the only shortcoming being that it came out 9 months after GTA3 redefined the series. If you played it on consoles, you were doing it wrong... firstly it was released on consoles two whole years after the PC release, and secondly most who were playing it were expecting GTA3 in the 1930's.

This game stands out as giving a true, realistic account of mafia life in the 30s and 40's. The cars, the police, the guns, the story... they were all based on reality. It's a documentary in a game, and I can enjoy that just as much as I can enjoy GTA's over the top gameplay and story.

I can't wait for this sequel, and hope that it comes out before EA potentially buys Take2 and shits all over this series.

The first one was decent, but with gta coming out soon, this game really is gonna be in the shadows.

Gah, I forgot to change it to the 30s when I went back and changed the structure of that sentence. This new one is in the 50s though.

Also, I completely agree with the GTA IV comments.

I love Mafia so much more than the GTA games. The world had a real weight and reality to it. Elements like obeying road rules when you were just doing normal commutes really made the times where you did have to go nuts seem that more crazy and fun.

Screenshots for the sequel are looking amazing. I don't get why more people aren't impressed by them. Hell in a week where I read hundreds of comments about the Fallout 3 shots be "jaw dropping" (despite random over used bump mapping, low res textures on many objects, low poly models especially in the environment, misaligned textures with huge seams, etc) I imagined people would damn near have their heads explode "scanners" style over these.

Oh BTW people commenting that this game will be overshadowed by GTA4 last I read it wasn't scheduled for release until 2009. But I suppose EA might own Rockstar by then and we'll have a yearly GTA to compete with.

The farther away this game is from the GTA launch, the better its chances.

Hm...three things:

1) I could’ve sworn I’ve seen these screens before, like when they first announced the game.
2) They look great...except for the excessive bloom lighting, ugh.
3) What TrailerParkJesus and everyone else said about GTA IV.
