We’ve finally got some gameplay footage from Madden NFL 09 — and it’s more than the two seconds or so that we saw in the teaser trailer. This trailer showcases just under a minute and a half of video. For the most part, it comprises people getting (and trying to avoid getting) tackled. If you find smash-mouth football unsettling, or you just don’t like seeing people get the crap kicked out of them, you may not want to click the ‘play’ triangle above.

Obviously, people are excited about NaturalMotion’s upcoming football game, Backbreaker, for many reasons — not the least of which is that it’ll make use of the company’s already-famous Euphoria physics engine. The tackle animations in Madden 09 don’t look quite as realistic, but they’re not too shabby, either. It’s clear that EA Tiburon has been working diligently to improve that aspect of the game. The “flow” of the game looks much better than it has in the past.

Still, am I the only person who feels that any and all football videogame footage should be set to NFL Films music? That stuff is inspiring. Oh, well...this trailer is all about the visual impact of Madden 09, and on that front, it delivers. Hit the comments to let us know what you think of it.

[Thanks, Justin!]

I'm really surprised that EA hasn't bought Naturalmotion and implemented the Euphoria engine into Madden.

Seems like the only reason this video exists is to counter the Backbreaker video. But there's no way in hell Madden's tackles can touch that.

I'm not really into sports games but I've often wondered, when these yearly sports games come out what do you guys do with last year's release? Do you keep it for the sake of collecting? Do you ever play it again? Just wondering.

Awaiting the "dude you have to get it its Madden" people.

I love football as much as the next guy, but I've lost a lot of interest in football games over the years. And while it looks good, I'm not sure I'm ready to fork over $$ for a football game that I'll play not nearly as much as I should for plunking down $60. Also, Madden games have been more about football as a whole rather than bone breaking hits.

I hope to god they get the PS3 version up to speed. I bought 06 on 360, it was shite. Got 07 for PS3 thinking it can't be worse than 06. I was right but still shite, ended up playing NCAA 07 until the game let me save a bug and I couldn't continue.

Just GOD make it good. I'm getting the collectors because the managing aspect of head coach appeals to me and then I get both for $45 each instead of $64 + $53 for buying each seperate.

Not buying this. BTW Samit, I played MLB 2K8 with my friends. The worst A.I. I've ever encountered. Seriously. Why does my Left Fielder run right into my Center Fielder when the catch is clearly in the center? WTF? That game sucks. The Show FTW.

Also, again, do not want. Tired of Madden. I'll surely play it at a friends or something, but it's not worth my money anymore.

The only thing that sucks is that Backbreaker's gonna have an uphill battle without the NFL license. I hadn't seen Backbreaker until hearing it mentioned here, but wow...it looks freaking amazing in terms of the physics. I do hope that it gets the attention that it deserves.

Madden 2009... Hmmm? I really miss the PS2 versions, in terms of gameplay. Yes, the graphics and physics in the game look outstanding. Can't wait to check it out!
EA knows people will buy this game, let's just hope they put a lot of effort into it and max this game out to its full potential!

Come on, EA! Don't fuck this up, now!

I just realized why tackles in video game football weird me out. They all use the same crunching sound effect regardless of how the runner gets hit. It's really unsettling to hear that when no actual impact has occurred. I'm sick of it.

Looks a lot like '08 to me. I already Goozex'd my 08 copy, and I'll probably pass on this one too. When are they going to add in everything people have asked for, and stop taking stuff away? Also, where's the 60 fps for PS3?
