Mistwalker and Microsoft Game Studios are nary a month away from releasing Lost Odyssey in North America and the admittedly mixed impressions are starting to pour in. Some are better than others, but the general consensus seems to be that Hironobu Sakaguchi knows how to make Final Fantasy, and that's what you'll get, albeit on the Xbox 360. It's a good thing I love Final Fantasy.

In his defense, ASH looks promising, and his earlier career features  a handful of games that wildly diverge from the Final Fantasy formula (you guys remember Vagrant Story, right?). Either way, as a diehard fan, I'm prepared to look past some of the Gooch's creative shortcomings. He's allowed to use RPG clichés -- he created them.

I'm a total sucker for jRPGs and concept art, and this latest batch has done little to stifle my anticipation for Lost Odyssey. The character models and the environments are all incredibly detailed, even though the massive gallery after the jump doesn't do it much justice. It's a lot prettier in motion, trust me. The gallery shows a wide variety of landscapes and architecture, ranging from desolate, barren environments to lush, elaborate technological cities. I presume that this architectural diversity represents the industrial revolution upon which the storyline is centered and the changes that Kaim experiences during his 1,000-year life.

I adore concept art, and while Kaim's character isn't my favorite, some of the other characters look really interesting. Mack (the little girl in green), Cooke (the girl in pink), and Gongora (the tank in the sweet-as-balls plate armor) look particularly realized, and I can only hope that their actual character development receives the same amount of attention to detail as their costumes. If some of their outfits look familiar, it's because Lost Odyssey's costume designer also worked on Final Fantasy XII.

Lost Odyssey will be released in a month, and I know that I and some of my fellow Destructoid compatriots are bubbly with anticipation -- are you? Furthermore, does this new art seal the deal for any of you on-the-fencers?

I'm betting that this is gonna be much better than FF XIII, but the sheep won't admit it and the fratboys won't play it, so it'll have the same fate as Blue Dragon.

I'm getting this game. I don't care what anyone says about it anymore, my expectations are low so maybe I'll come out surprised. The art in this game alone is worth the price to me.

I'm rather convinced now that Microsoft funded Mistwalker on the condition that he make a Dragon Quest clone (thus Blue Dragon) and a Final Fantasy clone thus (Lost Odyssey) before he do anything else, which is why I'm more hyped for ASH than either of those two games. I think ASH is probably Sakaguchi's first real game that's completely his vision since he let loose the Final fantasy shackles.

Still, with it coming up so soon, I'm starting to get excited for Lost Odyssey.

Actually, I meant Cry-On not ASH. ASH looks really good too though.

Sakaguchi did not direct Vagrant Story; Yasumi Matsuno directed Vagrant Story. Matsuno also directed FFTactics and FFXII.

Lost Odyssey's characters were designed by Takehiko Inoue, famed Japanese manga artist. FFXII's characters were designed by Akihiko Yoshida, who also worked on Vagrant Story, FFTactics, and FXII.

Come on guys. Get your facts straight.

It looks cool and I'll probably get it, but what's up with Kaim's mid-riff armor?

These screenshots found their way to my desktop over the weekend.

totally forgot about my preorder. now I can't stop thinking about it. I had to quit playing Shadowhearts so I don't get RPG'd out.

Looks very much like Oblivion. Hopefully it won't be as boring and easy.

@ AirborneToxicEvent: Completely different.

Back on topic, I think I'm going to pick this one up somewhere down the road. As long as it's more like Final Fantasy then Dragon Quest, I'll probably like it.

I hated Blue Dragon, the characters were fucking terrible and the game was way too old school. It's obvious after playing Blue Dragon and DQ8 that I officially prefer FF style games. Blue Dragon was just so......boring.

So hopefully this one will end up being something special, or at the very least be a good RPG. And not Blue Dragon.

Well, it's definatly pretty, but after Blue Dragon i'm gonna keep a bit of skepticism with this game... Blue Dragon gained a lot of hype and yet in the end, it wasn't really anything special (not to mention a few other episodes of over-hyped games, like Fable). The graphics are very nice especially the environments, though the character designs don't appeal too much to me... ofcourse, story, character personalities and gameplay are the other major players and we have yet to hear much about it, let's hope for some good stuff.

I feel like the only person in the world that actually enjoyed Blue Dragon, I can't wait for this.

@AirborneToxicEvent

Rest assured it's nothing like Oblivion aside from a fantasy setting. Oblivion was a very western RPG, Lost Odyssey is a quintessentially Japanese RPG with turn based battles, effeminate characters and drawn out plot arcs. If you like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest you'll love Lost Odyssey.

I just hope there is a good story behind the goofy circus clothes, but I expect there will be an overly dramatic love triangle, and then you save the world.

I'm gonna go sink back into Xenogears and hope for a brighter future.

Screw all the Haters. I'm getting this Day one. From the mixxed previews I read they're knocking it cause it's not all action , alot of reading and resembles FF.

Really?? Well that's what I like in a JRPG thank you very much.

@Renzoguy: I know he didn't direct Vagrant Story, but he was involved in an executive capacity. My point is that Sakaguchi is definitely able to create a game that isn't a FF clone. Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough. =/

I love JRPGs, and Lost Odyssey looks excellent, but what I heard about 20+ hours of cutscenes a while back just sounds painful. The 20 minute cutscenes in Xenogears were bad enough.
