New Life With PlayStation app gives you weather and more things you don't need

New Life With PlayStation app gives you weather and more things you don't need photo
     Not games

You know how the Nintendo Wii has its weather channel? Now the PlayStation 3 will have one. Great.

This new "Life With PlayStation" is an app that features a fancy 3D globe that can be explored to reveal weather and news, according to Gizmodo. Revealed at a recent press conference, Kaz Hirai says that this one comes with high-res imagery and global weather satellite images. You're seeing weather, and not a forecast. Super. Now they can claim that no one does weather like PS3 does

As far as news goes, even local news items will be displayed, which may point to the service being open to more than AP feeds.

Hirai also talks about a photo feature:

For the primary version the application sticks to the present time but in the future we plan to build a system that can visually present stored photos and movies according to their recorded time and place, allowing users with their friends and family to enjoy the visuals in chronological order.

My take? It sounds confusing, and in the end I don't really need another Weather Channel or CNN on my consoles. You all say it every day, and I'm with you: make more games, Sony.

Destructoid Contributor Jonathan Ross asked, "If you set it to dramatic does it tell you about all the people who are dying because of weather-related phenomena?"

I don't know, but that would be pretty cool!

I honestly couldn't care less if the PS3 could do my taxes, predict the stock market, or cook me scrambled eggs. All I want is some damn games and an online service that is actually worth a damn. Give me that Sony. Show me that and I'll buy more games for that huge black box that sits around and collects dust

What a joke. They have shit games as it is...you would think they would fire up the devs and gaming divisions instead of diverting resources for this crap. LittleBigPlanet is not enough to persuade me to spend over $400 for a PS3. And no...i don't care about blu-ray...

This is gonna be awesome! Now we can watch as "Life With PlayStation" gets delayed and will come out before "Home". It's not ONLY a game console, not just a Blu-Ray player, but it comes with the Weather Channel...Now you can justify running out and getting a PS3 since it now offers the trifecta of a value purchase...

It would almost be ridiculous to try and put out a few more AAA video game titles...I mean, I can watch Ricky Bobby in all his high def glory, and play as Snake, and watch weather...

Too many sarcastic comments crammed into one post? You bet.

Sony! Stop giving us the useless stuff we don't want, and give us the useless stuff that some people do want!

WTF WHERE IS HOME YOU RETARDS.

The people doing this stuff don't make games. Yeah, useless to those just looking for games, but these people would be doing something else other than making games anyway.

And, honestly, with PS3 having more game releases than the 360 this year... you guys are still questioning when the games will be coming?

You guys are such broken records.

I'd like to hope when you set it to dramatic, it announces 400 "PEOPLE ARE DEAD IN A TSUNAMI IN FIJI" while a really sad violin plays in the background and you get a picture slideshow of the carnage.

@Loki: We sound like broken records to you because of the fact the PS3 is about as usefull right now for gaming as a record player is. I personally own both an XBOX360 and a PS3, and I actually purchased my PS3 well before I did my XBOX, yet I still buy 90% of my games on the XBOX. Why? ... because the XBOX360 online is better and the achievements are pretty damn addictive. I also think the XBOX360 controller is better for FPS and racing games then the Dualshock 3 is.

The only games I own on the PS3 are Sony exclusive titles. I want more of these. I want the PS3 to succedd, I really do, but they still have a ways to go. I do think they will get there though. I have my fingers crossed.

Stop giving us free stuff! I don't like free stuff and don't want it. I want to pay for everything and want my ps3 in fact reduced in functionality! /sarc

Some of you are amazing, I bet someone would find some way to complain if sony, nintendo, microsoft, came to their house and handed them a bag of money. Whine whine whine.

Just what loki said... The people who make this stuff probably don't make the games. So I doubt there is time wasted.

Also @SilverDragon 1979: Take everything you just said and reverse it for me. 90% of my games on PS3, Controller: Prefer Dualshock, Achievements: Don't care, even though trophies are coming for those who do, Online: I can find people to play against on the PSN so I don't see how live is really that superior.

The only titles I own on the xbox are Microsoft exclusive titles. I want more of these. I want the xbox to succeed, I really do.

If it does RSS feeds and podcasts, I'm all for it. The PSP has a great streaming podcast feature, but I never want to use it because, I have to carry a PSP around my house draining its battery streaming a podcast over wireless. If my PS3 would do it, that would be awesome. I'd love to switch it on when I came home and have it collect all my news for me, if it also gives me weather? Bonus.

I'm afraid I don't understand. How exactly is this a bad thing? I like news. I like being up to snuff on current events. I like weather. I like my PS3. Now i can combine all those things, and ignore Fox News, CNN, and local broadcast news at the same time! What could be better?!

The more features the merrier. I'm going to use this when I get a motorcycle and need to know if I should drive it that day. I hate TV stations.

Honestly people, get off your high horses. Don't be upset every time they announce a new feature for the PS3. They have plenty of games out and coming out. I have both systems and I play the PS3 way more because I don't see the value in the few features live provides. I only have 4 games for the 360 because I don't buy multiplatform games for it. In fact, I have more games than I can finish right now, and there are still about 4 or 5 games I'll be buying for the PS3 before the christmas comes around. The 360? Gears2, that is all.

This is pretty nice. I like apps, they make me happy. Although by the looks of things, the likelihood of this hitting anytime this century are little to none. I'm still waiting for in game XMB and Home.

Completely agree with you. I mean, heck, just because I play GTA4, DMC4, Oblivion, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, COD4, Rock Band, GH3, Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones, Motorstorm, Tekken 5, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Folklore, The Darkness, Heavenly Sword, Conan, Dynasty Warriors 6, The Orange Box, Dark Sector, and all but 1 of my PS2 games (which is currently more than 90 games).

Not to mention the games I don't own or I won't mention due to their level of suck (Spider-man 3 and Beowulf... don't point and laugh!).

I mean, a system is upper crap without Halo 3, Mass Effect and BioShock... And crap like MGS4, Uncharted, and Ratchet & Clank far from makes up from not having those games!

As long as it looks as sexy as the music player earth (which turns heads for how sexy it is on my TV) I could care less as it could turn out to be pretty cool.

Para, Wrath, Ha-Puken and loki d20 basically summed up my thoughts.

Thanks for clearing that up Wrath. Maybe if they put Kratos in a suit and made him read the news people would stop complaining about non game related functionality.

great, now just the 360 needs to get one of these and I'll finally be able to close my windows forever for I will always be able to find out about the weather without them!

In all seriousness though guys I will admit the PS3 has lots of games to buy and play. Like I mentioned earlier I bought my PS3 6 months before I bought a PS3. I bought both my PS2 the day it came out. I bought the PS1 the day it came out, before Playstation was even a household name. What I have always loved about Sony is that they have been putting out incredible gaming platforms for over 10 years.

What I honestly want to see from Sony is for them to stop being reactive and start being proactive. Putting Blu-ray in the PS3 was a proactive move and it has seriously paid off. A lot of the features they have added recently are just features to try to mimic the XBOX360, or in this case the Wii. The Wii has had a global weather/news feature for almost a year now.
