New Jazzpunk trailer invokes spirit of Johnny Mnemonic

5:15 PM on 01.23.2014

Whoa

If you're going to validate your cult pop culture bona fides, this is how you do it. A new trailer for Necrophone Games' Jazzpunk has been released by Adult Swim, referencing the 1995 motion picture Johnny Mnemonic in a live-action sketch. There is so much visual information and so many little nods to other media (including a BBS "Door Game" bit which had me in stitches) that you'll probably want to give this three or four views to fully digest.

Jazzpunk releases on February 7 and I'm expecting to be doing a lot of laughing that day.

Describing Jazzpunk is pretty damn hard. It's billed as a "comedy adventure game," but it's so much more (and sometimes less) than that. Unless you really like the idea of squirting a can of Cheez Whiz on Jim Sterling.

I'd be convinced Jazzpunk was made by some actually-talented, alternate universe me, for me, if I didn't meet and chat with one half of its creative team, Necrophone Games' Luis Hernandez, for myself. It's a first-person joke...
