New, in-the-box Dreamcasts on sale at ThinkGeek [Update] photo

No, Sega's Dreamcast is not coming back. It's gone for good, as far as Sega is concerned. But there's a lingering fondness in gamers' hearts for the little white box. That's why retro game stores still stock Dreamcast games and accessories...and if you're lucky, working systems.

Forget the used crap, though. ThinkGeek has new Dreamcast systems, in the box, ready for the $99 of yours that you probably can't afford to be spending but will anyway. Their product page says that the systems "arrived mysteriously at our warehouse." How does that work? I need to get in on that.

From the product description:

Each Dreamcast console is new in the box and comes complete with a single controller, av cable and demo disc. You of course get a built in 56K modem and phone cable... which we assume you'll make great use of :)

As with my older disc-based Sega systems, I'm always paranoid that my Dreamcast is going to bite the dust, and then I'm going to be stuck system-less. I kind of want to buy one of these and store it for that time.

[Thanks, Nick]

[Update: it seems as if they're going to sell out today!]

They could have easily made more than double the money if they held out till September to sell them.

I think I'll go beat Jet Grind Radio again...

Only saw one in action once, and that was at friends house. He was playing Shenmu.. "Have you seen any sailors?"

Haha wow, that's asking wayyyy too much, even for new dreamcasts.

I still want one, even though I bought a used one not too long ago :(

@Celica
I can't stand JGR. Once you've played its sequel on the xbox, JGR is just too fustrating to really play. Check out Jet Set Radio Future. I still play that game from time to time. It is awesome. For realz.

I'd rather buy a PS2 for that price.

@ 007

Yeah I've always wanted to play Future but never had an Xbox. Plus I got my PS3 before the game became compatible with the 360. You may not enjoy JGR but it's one of my all time favouite games. I've gotten to the point where I can basically play through the entire game in my head haha.

When it comes to a new iteration I feel conflicted. I mean, I want a new version more than anything but I'm pretty sure Sega would find a way to mess it up. Plus I think something happened between Sega and Hideki Naganuma as his music wasn't in Sonic Rush Adventure :s

I never understood why people loved the Dreamcast so damn much. Especially since the controllers wire came from the bottom.

@maxhovoc2000:
Oh yeah, those controllers were godawful, especially the stick. But Dreamcast still seems to have fun games.

I loved my Dreamcast. I worked for FuncoLand at the time and it was the most fun console launch ever. There were games that people just had to have at launch like Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure and NFL 2K. Every system launch since then has been sort of sad in comparison.

Ah, the DC. What a great system. I'd certainly have picked another up for posterity, but ce la vie. Reasons for the love? Let me name them...

Shenmue, Gunbird 2, Cannon Spike, Blue Stinger (yes, I loved that one, flaws and all) Illbleed, Code: Veronica (Timed Exclusive the 1st), Skies of Arcadia, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Carrier, Zero Gunner 2, Under Defeat(!!!), Soul Calibur, Elemental Gimick Gear...good stuff, even now, and even as some have been ported to other systems. Sega's last hurrah and quite worth it.

I'd do this if most good DC games didn't already get ported to more powerful consoles, and if I didn't already have a fully-functional DC already.

Why would you pay $100 for a DC when it's so easy to find used ones for a quarter of the price?

I think that this offer is awesome for those that never experienced the DC. Since I already own 2 systems that work fine w/ VGA adapter (1 is NTSC-U and the other is NTSC-J, plus they are both PAL compatible for EU titles -- tee hee!), I've naturally passed on this.

...But I would so cream in my pants (I need a towel!) if someone had a one NIB with the ever elusive Broadband adapter!

@ GigaMach,
Naming all of those classics will force me to power up my DC tonight!

My Dreamcast is never unhooked from the tv and a power outlet. Anyone who let's their Dreamcast collect dust should just give it away, you obviously don't appreciate it enough.

I still have mine hooked up to the switch on the tv, but I ran out of outlets a little while back so it hasn't been played for a little bit

Horray for the first online gaming console ever! I played some great games on the Dreamcast. I wonder why it died?

The PS2 came along and slaughtered it in its sleep, And it wasn't because of piracy if I hear one more idiot say that I swear to fucking god I will slit your goddamn throats.

2 of my favourite games ever were on that system, Trickstyle (I still can't believe I've never talked to ONE person, other than my cousin and brother, that's never played Trickstyle) and Shenmue. Plus we had all the Sonic's on it, oh how those all nighters were fun....

Tricktyle was like Airblade but about a million times better. Only reason I bought Ariblade was because it was like Trickstlye a little bit with the hoverboards, I think I've been influenced by Back To The Future too much....

But for certain, I WILL be buying a DC again.
