The ad you're about to watch has no in-game footage at all. It is directed towards the hardcore Halo crowd that is obsessed with the story line. This is for the people who have read every book, comic and went to the trouble of finding the movie script.
It's really emotional to watch retired Major Pawl Czernek look at the reenactment of his famous battle and describe the events to the interviewer. The fact that there's no traditional sound effect for the Xbox 360 logo at the end really drives this ad home.
Was this too serious for you? Hit the jump for more wacky Korean Halo 3 ads where a guy in the Spartan armor plays StarCraft. Also, there's a StarCraft sound effect song towards the end ... ya, really.
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

I love the new Halo 3 ad. It's incredible how the most subtle and emotional marketing can get to you the most. It's incredible and I applaud Microsoft's marketing team for this one.
I thought the ad was SO seriously and dramatic it was almost comical. Almost like those horribly cologne / perfume ads. Though it was still cool. Can't really hate on different forms of commercial advertising, especially for video games.
I am not a fan of Halo at all, dislike it for the most part. But I liked the serious ad, it was pretty interesting and it at least focused on something other than Master Chief blowing the shit out of things.
Well, it was different, but is this going to get people to buy the game other than the hardcore? This feels like a failed ad. People who know very little about Halo are going to look at this and say "OK....back to the VMAs!"
It made me more excited to play Halo, though. I didn't pre-order and wont. Hopefully I can get a copy launch day.
I enjoyed this, though I think it was perhaps not as effective as it could have been- it seemed a little overdramatic, but I still appreciated the change of tempo. Good call Microsoft.
I have to agree with Trevor McGee. Not really a die-hard Halo fan, though I've played through the games, and even enjoyed playing the firsts multiplayer for a while. I did really enjoy this ad. It was kind of an eerie, Band of Brothers type emotional response, which is exactly what they went for.
Having played thew first Two Halo games. I enjoyed them. not a hardcore fan. just a happy customer. I just can get emotinally involved like others have
That doesn't mean I couldn't appreciate the Ad though. good stuff right there
goes right alone with the policy of NEVER SHOWING ANY GAME FOOTAGE WHATSOEVER!
thats one thing i abhor about commercials nowadays. nothing againt this particular commercials though lol
I'm no Halo fan, but that was a good advert. Like the Gears of War one before it, Microsoft knows how to pull out some classy advertising for games it wants to get behind.
i like the ad. i dont like the whole "believe" thing though. i live in massachusetts and when the red sox won the world series that was all everyone said. so now halo=red sox.
I absolutely fucking love this ad. It is really amazing to me. I assume that this ad is going to air on TV all over the place. Because it damn well should. It is one of those ads that give you major goosebumps. The way the whole thing is edited works perfectly. I would have to say this is the best video game ad that I can think of.
It doesn't focus on the gameplay or pretty graphics to sell it. In just 1 minute it manages to bring you into this character's world and allow you to feel the same feeling that he felt. THAT is where the beauty is in art in general. It isn't about all the fancy stuff, but to share an experience.
And that, ladies and kids, is why teh Haloes kick motherfucking ass. Regardless of what anyone may say or think, Halo has an utterly phenomenal amount of depth for an FPS. It's this kind of attention to quality and detail that makes the mythos so appealing to me. It's stuff like this that rekindles my Halo fanboyishness. Keep it up, Bungie.
So... That happened really far in the future of the Halo Universe.... meaning the humans have to win. There, half the story given away. Most Flood zombies don't live past 70 and they don't often tell old war stories. Or maybe they do, what the hell do I know about Flood social habits.
Maybe everyone else already knew this, and I'm just catching up. I don't know how they could say he was just a really, really old marine or something. Looks like we won. Rejoice.
BTW, that Korean promo was the most confusing shit I've ever seen. It even has parts of Time Crysis in there! Why does MC sound like Mickey Mouse? Why is he playing Starcraft? OH GOD THERE'S TOO MANY QUESTIONS!

The total lack of creepy crying babies makes this ad less interesting.
Also, the Korean ones make me laugh everytime. Although, the first one was the best.
It made me more excited to play Halo, though. I didn't pre-order and wont. Hopefully I can get a copy launch day.
I liked it.
1.) no cure for baldness in the 26th century?
2.) Did Luke Smith rip off the already established "BELIEVE" or did Bungie use his famous response to the four man co-op press release?
Success. /applaud Bungie Ad crew.
Korean Ad: Its funny but why do they alter their voices?
That doesn't mean I couldn't appreciate the Ad though. good stuff right there

OH, and they're not making a movie... why?

Also, WTF Korea? Yeah, you like Starcraft, but seriously.
Maybe everyone else already knew this, and I'm just catching up. I don't know how they could say he was just a really, really old marine or something. Looks like we won. Rejoice.
No no, they are holograms that shoot onto your retina to create the image of what LOOKS like miniature plastic soldiers.
Yes...that's it.
