Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Microsoft just passed along the fact that there are now two new maps for Halo 2 available for download for $4 ... yeah, $4. This is great and all, but at this point, who cares? Shouldn't Bungie be working hard on Halo 3 and making sure we get our FPS hands on the beta and then the actual game? (which will of course be super duper awesome)

Here are the deets on the new maps:

The king of “Halo” maps has returned at last. Hang ’Em High, arguably the most popular multiplayer map for the original title, has been reimagined for “Halo 2” as Tombstone, with all-new graphics, features and a few hidden surprises. Now fans will enjoy the dangerous catwalks and trenches that made this the most requested “Halo” multiplayer map ever, with a modernized “Halo 2” flavor.

The second map, Desolation, is a symmetrical, Deathmatch-oriented map and a beautiful remake of the original Derelict. With new graphics and effects and a massive gameplay overhaul, the old favorite is now faster-paced and more balanced than ever — perfect for intense “Halo 2” combat.

Yay. Now give me Halo 3. Now! I demand it.

Summa: Bungie didn't make these maps.

Max Hoberman's (former bungie multiplayer lead) new studio "Certain Affinity" made these two remakes.

Bungie's still working on numero 3, so we're all set.

Fuck. Yes. Finally, Hang Em' High.

Only thing that sucks is that these maps won't be included in the matchmaking playlists because you have to pay for them.

@KilgoreTrout XL

I hope they'll be free eventually. I'll pay for them anyways, I do play custom games from time to time. But I have a feeling that, by the time they're free, I'll be playing the H3 beta and won't care anymore.

@Azrael

I play it almost everyday. As I type this, there are 22,049 players only in Halo 2, according to Bungie.net

Yes, people play Halo 2. A lot. It was the #1 Xbox Live games for two years straight until GoW came out. The 360 was out for a year before anything could surpass H2.

Its the simplicity of Matchmaking that keeps the game going.
Toneman's Avatar
Toneman at 03/30/2007 13:19
Well right now there's 22,567 people playing it. So I would say that yes, people still play it.

KilgoreTrout XL: Yes, I was going to bring up that point as well. A different company made these maps. Also, are these the maps that will only work on the 360? I remember Bungie talking about maps for H2 that will only be downloadable on the 360.

velcroman: Never forget!

as was said...the Hang Em High was best with Halo 1 pistols...also H1 grenade trejectory. However, these look fun!

As for the person complaining about *gasp PAYING for these, are you so cheap that you can't shell out 4 bucks for their time and effort? cmon

518 more people started playing between JJ's post and Toneman's.

I still play Halo 2 everyday. I'm trying to get into GoW, but the matchmaking in Halo 2 has spoiled me so much that GoW pales in comparison. How have developers not caught on that the Halo 2 matchmaking system is about as good as it can be?

Why do bloggers always seem to botch Halo information? (I don't just mean Destructoid. I still love you, Summa.) Thanks to those who set the record straight before I got here. I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but the maps will be downloadable via the in-game downloader, not the Marketplace. Owners of the original Xbox WILL be able to download it.

The reason Bungie didn't make these maps is precisely that - they were busy making Halo 3. And typically, on an average evening, there are 50-60 thousand people playing Halo 2 online. Come on, Robby Baby, get with it. You make me weep tears of disappointment. And why are people bitching about $4? It's four fucking dollars. I'm broke and I'll happily pay $4 for new versions of two of Halo 1's best maps. Boo-fucking-yah.

Yeah, I haven't made the switch to the 360 either. I was rather pissed to hear that it might not work for us old-schoolers. I was pathetically giddy when I heard that Microsoft was going to let me give them $4.

Yay! :) I wish there was Chill Out, Prisoner or Damnation too! But these two will do.

It would also be nice if it was for the OG xbox, but I understand why not :(

& what's the point of halo one maps without the pistol?!

Oh well... Still cool :) Can't wait for halo 3
