I bought Reach at the weekend. The gameplay really does feel 10 years old!
*isn't disappointed*
*laughs at all the 12 year olds*
Meanwhile, Half-Life, a good game, is 14 years old. It could be some of you Halokidz's daddy!
Same with Counter-Strike. I remember playing that for the first time in beta 5.something and thinking "huh, this is pretty good, I hope this does well" and blow me down, now it's the biggest FPS ever, 12 years old and still going very strong. And that still surprises me more than Half-Life.
I wasn't targeting you, per se, but I can see how you are offended and feel the need to defend Halo. It is, after all, the most over-hyped piece of garbage ever made. No worries though, maybe one day you will have the maturity capable of understanding the Half-Life series. ;)
Well done, assumptions are the mother of all fuckups.
Of course, your comment could be easily turned around on to you, simply switching Halo's and Half-Life's places. But I'm not going to do that because I'm not a dick fanboy who feels the need to belittle other series to justify his own purchases.
I was simply expressing that the begining of Halo sticks in my mind clearer than the launch of Half-Life and even though Half-Life is older, the time that Halo has been around comes as more of a surprise. If you wish to project some kind of franchise war into that then that's your doing.
I can't believe I was 11 years old when this game first dropped. Damn. Also, sounds neat, but I don't know if it sounds $30 neat.
see I've played Both series and I wondered what Rammstein's deal is. I guess he hates that series with the fire of a thousand suns. No reason to be a dick about it even if it's clear your really just jealous of Halo's success ;)
I lol'd at "with the fire of a thousand suns" btw :D And the reason I hate Halo? Because when it launched, 12 year olds everywhere were like 'zomg BEST FPS EVER!' and/or 'ONLY FPS TO EVER MATTER' and/or 'BEST FPS ON CONSOLEZ' when their dumbasses have never even played Half-Life(which *did* have a Playstation2 release btw) and/or GoldeEye(Released around the same time as Half-Life, interestingly enough).
Basically, I hate Halo because of its overzealous and uninformed fanboys. Much like Citizen Kane, the Beatles, etc. I wasn't serious when I pwn'd Ace Flible earlier, I was just teasin' but I do have contempt for anyone that purports Halo to be the second coming of Jebus.
Okay, first off, back off Citizen Kane ;)
Second, I can fully understand that, but you have top admit it did some things differently. Hell, regenerating health (*or shields, whatever) was practically unheard of in the mainstream until Halo. Of course, whether it's a good thing or not is questionable, but it resulted in a relatively unique gameplay style. Unlike CS or most military shooters, fast reflexes and twitch gaming was only half of it, and at the time, that was pretty new and awesome (particularly to the console crowd. I can't really speak to the PC guys).
Now of course, if it isn't a 'realistic' affair like CoD of Battlefield then it probably features big men with altogether far too much vitality and the ability to shrug off mortar fire. That and the fact we're now on the fifth iteration of Halo means that it all comes off a little stale.
Genuine question time now though: Is there something special about Half-Life that the secon game didn't have? What makes it so amazing? Because, without trolling here, I played the second one, and I do NOT understand the hype. It was alright, don't get me wrong, but it was hardly stellar. Is the first one simply better than its sequel (as is so often the case)?
DISCLAIMER FOR ALL YOU FOLKS WITH IMAGINARY SCORES TO SETTLE: No, I'm not comparing Half-Life to Halo in a bad way. That Halo was new and interesting is a completely separate point to the fact that I don't 'get' Half-Life.
