New FPS heading to the Dreamcast: Nostalgia FTW! photo

Asking videogame nerds if they like the Dreamcast is akin to asking Roman Polanski if he likes a trail of candy leading to his bedroom. The system that has only gotten more popular with hindsight has a brand new shooter coming out for it, thanks to a team of plucky Homebrewers. The game's called Hypertension, and it's based on the ludicrous PC FPS Blood.

While homebrew Dreamcast games are nothing new, Hypertension is particularly interesting because it's not a puzzle game or a scrolling shooter. It's not often the Dreamcast gets an FPS, so those who want to do something other than pilot little spaceships and move colored blocks around might be interested.

As well as basing itself off the Blood series, Hypertension also uses the EDGE Engine, which is in turn based upon the DOOM source code. Nostalgia fans will have plenty to indulge in with this shameless throwback game. Also, if you don't own a Dreamcast, never fear. The game is due to hit PCs and Linux too.

There's a video after the jump, but be warned that the game is still in Alpha build so it's not looking quite as good as it could and hopefully will. Still, it'll give you a good idea of how the game runs. Let us know what you think.

Blood is my favourite FPS EVAR!

It's been too long since I played some blood, Tommy guns akimbo and the old aerosol can! Fuck yeah.

I want a HD Blood remake to hit PS Store NOW!

What an obscure source material. Still, Blood was pretty awesome and the early build of the game is looking pretty spiffy to boot.

Hey, if the PS2 can still have great games coming out for it, why not the Dreamcast?

Blood is fucking amazing. This is... an awkward combination of too dark 3d graphics and sprites taken directly from a bunch of old games. Damn, I was all excited too.

I fucking love Blood. Awesome game, and the included Type O Negative video for "Love you to death" was an awesome bonus. Introduced me to Type O Negative, who I still love to this day.
