Honestly, the PlayStation 3 has been lacking quality titles, but after watching the just released, brand new trailer for the just released, brand new Folklore (see above), my hopes for Sony's baby have increased triple-fold. I thought I had grown out of this sort of Tim-Burton-meets-Hironobu-Sakaguchi RPG epic until I watched that clip up there and soiled myself with glee. Absolutely everything about that film screams joy, happiness and golden apples, and honestly if I could procreate with a piece of media, it would be that clip.
One quibble though: that PS3 'This Is Living' font at the end still sucks. It belongs on a sign for a chain of family restaurants, not at the end of a classy clip like the above.
[UPDATE: Full disclosure time, the above video is a lie, people are gullible, and I'm a terrible person. Hit the jump for an explanation.]
Two days ago one of the PR guys I've been e-mailing asked me to review the above clip. After watching it three or four times over, I responded in an extremely professional manner: I thought the pacing was odd, there was too much footage of walking around, and of course, the mind-bending horror.
Only later, after speaking to another writer friend of mine was I informed it was actually a hoax. I felt humiliation the likes of which I hadn't felt since all those other kids in high school laughed at me on prom night after drenching me in pig's blood. Of course, lacking the ability to pyrokinetically ignite a gym full of PR folk, I opted for route number 2: congratulating them on making me look dumb, and praying they'd let me screw with the entirety of my audience. Of course, since they'd recently developed an evil sense of humor, they were up for it, and sent along the above clip for my use.
Of course, you realize what this means right? None of you can ever trust anything you read on the Internet again. Thanks to that above Folklore trailer, we've entered an era of lost innocence. You're welcome.
The 'This Is Living' font still blows, though. That part was not a lie.
Dammit Nex! This is the second video you've posted that I really want to see and that tells me it's no longer available! I'm sure you're doing it on purpose just to fuck with me! ;) It couldn't possibly be something to do with my computer.....
It works! I swear it works! If it doesn't, refresh the page. The issue is with Youtube's uploading stuff that gets all pissy about things from time to time. It is now fixed permanently.
Yeah Nex, it probably does work for other people, I was just joking about it being your fault. When I get home I'll try it on my system there. This work one is probably just messing things up. =)
This game's cgi cutscenes are AMAZING. The game's only fault... It's a bit linear. Too mix it up they have a couple choose your path "mazes"... The colors in the game are off the hook! & the "Folk" are very well imagined!
BY the way it makes 100% good use of SIXAXIS... If you're in to RPGs its for you... Collecting clothes (Serves a purpose gameplay wise), Pages to boss books, Leveling up, & DL'able quests & Clothes & maybe Folk!
There's nothing more enjoyable in this game than sucking up multiple IDs or Folk's Souls @ one time! With the use of the SIXAXIS!
The music is excellent to comical & sound is great THX!
Huh? What does it mean for it to be a hoax? Is it not actually Folklore footage? Or was the gushing description the hoax? I don't see anything wrong with it aside from the freaky girl knocking a year off my life.
Played it and.....I thought the game sucked. Text instead of audio, hardly next gen, there is a stunning amount of loading (every few screens) and lame 2d/3d conversations which look ps1. The game looked ok at best. As for the for the game setting, it is clearly a japanese view of Ireland which is embarrassing to say the least. If it was on the ds it would be a great title. I expect MUCH more from the ps3. Video cut-scenes are all very well but it is not enough. If you are desperate for a game then go ahead as there is some fun to be had but this is no system seller. Image Medieval meets Final Fantasy 7 on the ps1.
I've been playing this the last few days. lot of load points, but the load times are pretty short so I don't really notice them. The game isn't groundbreakingly awesome, but it is still alot of fun and I have been enjoying the experience.
Wait, so if this is a hoax, then does this mean that Sony [b]isn't[/i] getting what looks to be a beautiful looking and hopefully fun game? How can making hoax trailer that looks good possibly be good PR? This just makes me hate them.
Thanks for posting this Nex, you've made me have one of those great realisations. I dunno if anyone else gets these, but I'm talking about times where you just can't justify something you know is right or disprove something you know is wrong; like trying to separate lego pieces, but then you stumble upon the reason why.
Said situation applies with hoaxes. I've never been able to really work out why some hoaxes are funny and clever, and some are just apathy inducing. Until just now, of course, so here goes.
Tricking people is easy. If you trust someone, it's a sign of faith and care that they are willing to take what you say for granted. There's no great amount of intelect or personal charisma required to trick someone into believing something mundane, especially when you're in a position of authority or assumed knowledge. The best hoaxes and cons are ones that have some kind of marked effect using such a hollow premise.
You have no reason to feel embarressed if a bored PR guy sends you a poorly made video trailer and calls it an actual trailer. You do however have reason to feel embarressed if you think forwarding the video onto a load of other people to incite the same effect is worth a damn.
It's like saying they've discovered a new type of bird and called it the testiprepubis. It's no more ridiculous than the tit, boobie, woodpecker or the cockrell, so why wouldn't people believe it?
Ok, so I watched it before the update, I'm guessing that the girl was supposed to scare you? is that the hoax?, cuz everything else is real. I didn't jump or anything btw, I don't get involved enough in internet videos for that to happen.

no longer avail, suckz
yup. video is gone.
wow that girl was freaky.
Bizarre. It was showing up fine for me. I tweaked the settings, so it should appear for all of you. Try again.
That video sucked.
fixed thx, still not sure if I'll get this game, too many damned games coming out right now.
Every time I see a new trailer for the game all I can think about is the music, they totally jacked it from Fable

/hates you

Worked for me.
Also, GAHHHHH
Yep it works for me and that girl scared the shit outta me!
Hmmm, didn't excite me that much...not sure this is a system seller for me at least.
Yeah Nex, it probably does work for other people, I was just joking about it being your fault. When I get home I'll try it on my system there. This work one is probably just messing things up. =)
Nope no video.
I haven't been following this game much, but from what i've seen it looks unique.
That screaming thing scared the fuck out of me.
If this game ends up being really good, then perhaps I shall put it on my list of games to buy when I can afford a PSTriple
That little girl was one of the creepiest things i've seen in a trailer for a while, thanks for the nightmares nex
Wow, that scared the crap outta me. Awesome, vid though. Has anyone played it yet, and if so, what did you think?
This game's cgi cutscenes are AMAZING. The game's only fault... It's a bit linear. Too mix it up they have a couple choose your path "mazes"... The colors in the game are off the hook! & the "Folk" are very well imagined!
Yep. That game will definitely sell a few PS3s. I can see the PS3 doing really well some day.
sorry tis highly improbable that it is better then sex

You're a bad man Nex.

When PR folk decide to prank people, they make up false trailers and disseminate them to journalists.
Apparently.
I want it! I don't really have time for it now, but I still want it!

What wonky360 said is true...
The load times aren't LONG & that's if you install 810mb worth of whatever it is on your HD.
The 2 playable characters are gameplaywise different.
It does get repetitive but you do have to go through different Folk to solve puzzles & beat bosses. But you have to realize it is a RPG!
@holyetheline
Someday indeed... *oink, oink* where did that come from...the sky?
I've been playing this the last few days. lot of load points, but the load times are pretty short so I don't really notice them. The game isn't groundbreakingly awesome, but it is still alot of fun and I have been enjoying the experience.
I still don't get it... wasn't it just lame?
Damn freaky little girl! >:[

When are we gonna get a freakin preview button for the comments!?
UglyPhil is upset.
Screamers are silly.
...prank trailers? What has the world come to?
Saw this at Target last Week.
It was the first time I kinda wanted a PS3
Instead I bought a Zune, no seriously!
It's candy apple red .
I haven't seen a thing like this on the internet in at least 5 years.
Nex got PRanked... Yuck! Yuck! Yuck!
That didn't scare me, am I fucked up in the head?
Sony's PR people really think they're smart and funny, don't they?
Ok, so I watched it before the update, I'm guessing that the girl was supposed to scare you? is that the hoax?, cuz everything else is real. I didn't jump or anything btw, I don't get involved enough in internet videos for that to happen.
Usually I'm scared shitless with screamers, but this one didn't get me. It was a solid "Meh".
Let's see what happens :D.
Oh, and do have 1999 give them a call to explain that screamers have been lame since 1999.
