New Final Fantasy XIII trailer is live, includes in-game footage photo

I have to admit that after not connecting with Final Fantasy XII as I hoped I might, I lost a lot of enthusiasm for the Final Fantasy series. You meet people all the time who say there hasn't been a good Final Fantasy since VII, and while I personally loved several of the games following it, I definitely sensed that there was some spark missing as of late.

That being said, it's hard to know whether I'm experiencing a Pavlovian reaction over the brand spanking new Final Fantasy XIII trailer that just went live on the game's Japanese website, or whether I am really am loving what I'm seeing, but either way I think I just tapped into my sense of excitement for this game, and that's a bit of a thrill when you have loved games in this series as much as I have.

Go watch and tell us what you think -- and yes, in-game footage is being shown in there!

Eh, looks alright. Shame about the combat though.

Well, I think I'm officially excited for the game play. I'm still pessimistic about the story and characters though. I suppose my worries of a weak story and characterization won't be put to rest until I can get my hands on a copy, if that ever happens in the next five years.

But if I was a graphics whore I would be all over this game, I'll say that.

I'll ask again like in one of the blogs, was it just me or did that look turn based?

it looked like a combo of turn based/real time to me. Possibly something like the older FFs where enemies still attack while you're choosing attacks, spells, etc. If thats what it is then... came x2

After watching the trailer I am still not necessarily sold, I will have to wait till it comes out and I can see more on it. I personally am not totally sold on the art direction of the game. I am still hoping for the best though when it is released.

"I'll ask again like in one of the blogs, was it just me or did that look turn based?"

Based on how the characters were moving around and from what I have seen of FFXII from my roommate it looks like the FFXII battle system with an altered HUD. I have no idea though aside from the impression I got from the trailer.

I've got a question- The trailer was on the japan website, all the talking and boxes during in game combat were in Japanese, except for the "bonus" bar on the top right of the screen. Any idea why that might be?

I'm pretty sure the developers stated some time ago that it was turn based with real time elements, like in the older Final Fantasy games.

@SWE3tMadness

There's an english translation trailer here.

Looks pretty, awaiting English translation and more information about the gameplay elements. The art direction seems different from the Final Fantasys I played before, and I'm not quite sure I'm sold on it yet. The last FF I played was 10. Anyone else think Metal Gear when the big robot came out just before they showed gameplay footage?

@311grassr00ts

The Japanese aren't shy about using English lettering in their stuff. If you noticed some of the soldiers had PSI-COM above their health bars and then a bunch of Japanese after it. It's actually quite common to find English in Japanese products.

How come at the end it said "For Playstation 3 in 2009." It doesnt mention 360.

Ill have to wait for 2010 for XBox? :( Otherwise the combat looks ep.

Fourth comment, one page for me! The XBOX 360 version isn't coming out in Japan and the release date on the Japanese website is for Japan. European and North American folk will probably get the PS3 version and the 360 version at around the same time.

yeah thats exactly what it means. It will be released in japan on the PS3 in late 09 everywhere else on the 360/ps3 in early/mid 10

Don't know about the rest of ya'll, but I'm pumped for this. I hope the NA version has the Japanese voice-overs availible with english subs, the English voice actors for FF games are great, but I like the Japanese voice overs better.

The combat actually reminds me of Knights of the Old Republic in that the characters don't just stand around in between actions (ala FF XII)--they're weaving and dodging around.

This could break my long-held disinterest in the series. Vanille = <3

Looks like the combat system is similar to White Knight Chronicles kind of, but with more flair.

Eh, i'd like to see more before I get excited, especially with all the recent trash Square has put out.

I'll give them this though, those people jumped in the air a lot like in AC, so they got that down.

Bleh. FF is so convoluted now. They need to go back to the basics and let people ride chocobos. Instead we get these unnecessarily complex CG scenes that look like a fever dream after watching The Matrix and Star Wars.

Looks interesting. I'll probably need to wait ten years before I can play it, but the graphics are pretty and at least the main character (wich I assume is the girl) is apparently something new.
Combat looked a little weird, though.

Seems like a weird mash up of a SO 3 and ATB type battle system. Could be alright, but it could be so so awful like XII.

I think I'm more excited to play this game to listen to the music more than anything.

Which I'm all for. X-2 may have been an average overall experience, but the battle system was still fun.

So, they take a complete step backwards with the combat system? XII's combat was the best in the series and now they go back to ATB. yawn.

The combat seems...interesting at best. I prefer the turn-based combat, and so far have found the system in FFX to be my favorite by far. And from the five hours I've played of FFXII (just got it), I'm not sure about the active battle system at all.

That said, the game looks absolutely gorgeous, and no matter the battle system, I'm buying it day one. I'm excited for this game again now!

@Conan-san, not really. You had great control over every aspect of your teammates behavior without having to press the attack and magic menu buttons every 15 seconds. I personally loved that, because I'm honestly sick of ATB.

Honestly if there's one reason I found ff10 boring as hell it was because Its changed almost none from final fantasy 4 in the combat department, except for adding in such annoying elements as forcing me to use annoying as hell characters like wakka to hit certain enemies.

The cutscenes look much better now. It's nice to see that SOMEONE is finally getting the hang of realistic lighting and shadows.

I can't really judge the rest of the game based on what little is shown, but it looks promising at least.

Also, count me in with the people who wish they'd try going back to the older medieval/steampunk settings rather than delving further into the sci-fi/cyberpunk. I'm not going to hold it against the game but it'd still be nice...

For what it's worth, FF XII was actually my favorite in the series, and that goes back to the SNES series (I've only played the NES/PSP ones for a few minutes). The game felt bigger than anything before it (including VII, which seemed absolutely huge at the time, and still does), and I found the combat to be the most refreshing and fun I'd ever played in an RPG.

The story was a bad ripoff of Star Wars, but with the exception of VII, the stories are always bad. On the other hand, the voice acting in XII was some of the best I've heard, and a big improvement over Tidus and company in X.

Whatever the case, I bought a PS3 for this game, long before I knew I'd have an option. And after this trailer, I'll probably stop following new content. I've always liked the game. Surprises in the past have always been positive.
