New Final Fantasy XIII battle screens looking good photo

Call me crazy, but I just haven't felt a lot of excitement this year about Final Fantasy XIII (or last year, for that matter). Square-Enix has fallen short of my expectations more than they have met them as of late, and I just didn't want to expect too much. That is, until I saw this trailer. At that point, for some reason I found all the excitement at the same time, and ever since I've been genuinely hyped for this game.

You can see a few of the new battle screens in the gallery and the full batch over at Famitsu, and there's a lot to look at. They look great, but best of all, fairly uncluttered, which is an issue I've had with a lot of recent RPGs. If I could somehow play one Dead Space style with my health displayed physically on my body, I'd be absolutely thrilled, although I'm not holding my breath.

According to Square, the game is still slated to come out sometime this year. Excited?

*shrugs* I'm still not really interested, but that's probably because I own neither system the big title is coming out for. =P I may give Agito a spin sometime, but apart from that, I can't see myself buying either console because of this game.

I'm very excited for all the games in the Final Fantasy XIII series. They all look amazing (even though we still don't know anything about Versus XIII).

I've done nothing but salivate for FFXIII since the very first teasers came out for it. The notion of combining a more lively combat system and world via XII with a futuristic setting, wrapped up in rebellion via VII has me all kinds of excited (some of which I'm simply not willing to discuss on such public forum).

I just hope it's not another gorgeous game packaged around an awkward teenage drama. I think we're all over that.

I'm semi-excited, but nowhere near as much as I used to be. Square's really let me down with how long it's taking to get this out, and as a long-time fan it's kind of depressing to know this is likely the first console generation without three main FF-titles.

I'm still keeping an eye out on AC:Complete for the demo, though, and I'll be scouring ebay for one if it doesn't come in the US version.

Square has had a terrible track record, but most of those games are not even really theirs, they just publish the titles. Also, Square has failed to drop the ball on a major Final Fantasy release. Sure, we all have our favorites, but overall the masses are pleased with each release. I have no doubt that 13 will be an amazing title.

I think Niero hit the nail on the head. This looks (visually) quite stunning to me, but I'm extremely skeptical of how they will handle the story elements. The whole "androgynous man-child who acts like a 14 year-old girl" thing is getting really old...and I like JRPGs.

I'm optomistic, but my personal hype meter has been dropping because they still haven't announced a release date for it, or even when they think it'll be ready. Which leads me to believe we won't see it this year, hell I'm not even sure about next year.

I will probably get this game. Hopefully I have enough $ by then to get a PS3. I just can't play rpg game on a 360 controller.

I'm hoping that this will be the revival of Final Fantasy for me, but I honestly wouldn't be too disappointed if it wasn't.

I think the new combat system, with turn based combos, is going to be incredibly satisfying. I have never disliked any Final Fantasy battle system innovation; I even loved 11 and 12. This looks like it could be realistically awesome.

You're in luck! This time, the hero is a girl, though I'm sure she's not 14. But she's also girl-Cloud. ....yeah...D:

It looks as superb as I expect from Square, and I'll more than likely end up buying it. I just hope the story is not more andro-hero cheese. I've had my fill of it in anime, manga and games.

Square, you have a lot to do, to trump Persona 3 and 4 and really impress me. I'll keep my fingers crossed, after Infinite Undiscovery and Last Remnant.

The game mechanics looks interesting. Is it real time? I don't know, but it looks cool. If it has guns in the game, I'm sold. I could care less about the story.

Yo dawg, we heard you liked RPGs, so we put a girl in yo' RPG so you can role-play all day. Game even comes with a wig, dawg.

Lame, I know. But anyway, I'm looking pretty forward to this. I think Square is done with their man-girl games for a little while. Star Ocean is out the door, and Final Fantasy 9, 10, and 12 were a long time ago. Plus, with a girl lead I have faith that some maturity could be brought to the series.

Just look at Final Fantasy 6. That one had one of the best, most mature stories in the series with characters that... well... there was a homicidal clown, a ninja, a grungy thief and a perv king! COME ON!

Is that a male or female? I'm trying to figure out if I should be attracted to it. Thanks Final Fantasy.

Hmm, I want to be excited for a new Final Fantasy, but the fact that I don't plan on owning a PS3 anytime soon severely limits my excitement factor.

NO no no no no no, sorry Squeenix but this really is not exciting at all. Sure the battle footage looks fluid and the graphics purty, but it's the whole typical rebels against evil empire/corporation/army/kingdom it's all very generic now. They're designing this for the Japanese market and we all know how much the Japaners like to deviate from their RPG formula's....
