New Final Fantasy XII: Remnant Wing scans photo

New scans of the FFXII spinoff DS title are spreading on GAF like herpes on South Beach. We brought you the details of the game yesterday along with the concept art, so if you're keeping up with us you're ready to see what the in-game graphics actually look like -- and for a retro style game they are sick. I'm already sold; take my wallet and let me know where to sign. The visual depth and detail is impressive -- more gorgeous sprites on the screen at once and an engaging combat screen sure to keep up busy for weeks.

I wouldn't be a blogger if I didn't have gripes to share, though. My beef with this preview is this -- it's right out of the Squenix playbook.  Graphical upgrade aside, it is yet another classic Fat-head Fantasy style. Let me just voice an unpopular but necessary thought and chalk this up for debate:

Why must Square ping pong between the little fat heads and the hyper realistic characters? The fact that this is supposed to be an older Vaan is why I'm questioning this art direction.  It just seems stupid and confusing for the cast to be stylized like children. It makes no sense. How about some middle ground, Squenix?

It's been nearly two decades of cherubs, let's see some mature looking retro graphics already for a change. It is not a limitation of the DS at all -- it doesn't have to be this way.  For example, Phantasy Star games pulling off great looking anime style characters that actually better resemble the non watered down original  FF12 concept art -- and they were doing it on a 16 bit platform that's ten years old.  Nei = the rabbit lady.  They can bring it if they wanted to. An art director over there just needs to get the big chocobo nads to make it happen.

You shut your filthy mouth, Niero. It's FFXII that looks like FFT, and there ain't nothing wrong with that. Goddamnit!

... I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I don't mean to fight with you, baby. I'm just so tense -- come back to bed. Please? No, don't leave, baby! I'm sorry!

It looks quite a bit better than I expected it would.
But yeah, Vaan looks like a child.

......wow.

Anyways.... big chocobo nads? You and Aaron are apparently made for each other.
(but does agree about the childish animation)

Lol I said I'm buying the game no matter what, but it makes no sense! I'm saying everyone should have pubes in this game, but I don't want to see them. Ever. Not even on the floor in the bathroom.

Random battle encounters, yea or nay?

That's the deciding factor.

DECIDING!

I say poo on random encounters. They're so disruptive and irritating, nostalgic or not.

While you guys are here, I'll give you a cover sneak peak to a new feature of Destructoid we're working on today. It's ugly as Britney's roast beef but some of the features are already working:

I like the art style. I'd buy it just for that.

Nice to finally see what the actual game screens look like! And the comment watch feature is pretty much something I've been meaning to request for a while now. :)

Comment Watch feature will be awesome. Nice addition Niero! Even better because I'm currently highlighted on it twice!

Good grief ... I had such high expectations of this game, but now I'm feeling rather skeptical. Why the hell can't we just get a normal, non-cutesy Final Fantasy for the DS, damn it?!

I'd really like to see a protagonist in a FF game who is older than 15. Maybe that will lead them to non-cutesy graphics.

Well this idea's shot for XIII but if (see when) they pump out XIV, the main character should be a middle-aged guy. Or at least someone who's age doesn't start with a one.

While I agree with Niero's assessment of the art style, is anybody really surprised? Most DS graphics tend to feature really bright and colorful, kids-books graphics.

The comment watch is a great idea, Niero, I like it.
Beats the hell out of getting 27 e-mails a day.

Wait, nevermind, I'm thinking of the forums.
Scratch that last sentence. Still a good idea, though.

Revenant Wings, right? Not Remnant?

Anyhow, the game looks awesome. But there are simultaneously some new screens out for Legend of Mana, and they look REALLY similar: http://gonintendo.com/wp-content/photos/86402_m2_122_345lo.jpg

REALLY.

Wasn't the world in Final Fantasy XII based on Final Fantasy Tactics Advance? If so, then this is just going back to its roots.
