New Fatal Frame Wii screenshots and details photo
     Nintendo

I'm sure you'll agree that Tecmo makes a damned fine videogame, but my favorite of all their works is the Fatal Frame/Zero/Rei series of games. While it isn't the most popular of the survival horror games, I think it manages to be one of the scariest, and I've been looking forward to details on the upcoming Wii version since we first heard about it last fall.

Famitsu has new details on the title that they're calling Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (or Rei: Tsukihami no Kame). This Nintendo/Tecmo/Grasshopper Manufacture (No More Heroes, Killer 7) collaboration brings back Fatal Frame 3 producer Keisuke Kikuchi, who says that "the moon, a mask, and memory play a major role in the title," the fourth of the series. It looks like Suda Goichi (Suda 51) will get his hands on the title as well.

At an event, two minutes of footage from Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was shown off. It seems that the game features a girl who lost her memory. Famitsu says that not much was revealed, but the girl does sneak into a old house (of course!), and they say that the game looks like a Japanese-style horror film.

Kikuchi says that he thinks the Wii control scheme and horror games are a good match, and that we should look forward to this new Fatal Frame. What do you think? Do you think the pairing will work?

I seriously do not like playing Fatal Frame games by myself. It's the only reason I haven't finished FF2. This looks very promising. Those screens are fantastic, for a Wii game, of course.

I've always had a soft spot for the Fatal Frame games. They could always make me scared and I love them for that. Hopefuly Suda51 can make this title great, already loving the visual style!

This is awesome news.

However, I want to get this game... but the Fatal Frame titles are widely regarded as the scariest shit in gaming... and I'm a huge pussy.... =(

Why is it that whenever Destructoid reports on a Wii game, they rarely give it the benefit of the doubt or talk about how excited they are for it (when many times they obviously are or should be), instead always asking the "what do YOU guys think? Will it work?" question at the end of the article?
It's like they don't wanna say anything good about the Wii and ask us to say it instead. Or maybe they're hoping that we bash the title. Either way, they always let us do the dirty work of judging the title. It's just a bit odd is all.

As a fan of the series (I own all three, including the first two on both xbox and ps2, and have played through the first two about five times each), I am very excited for the next title in the series, and I think that the wii is the perfect place for it (the idea of controlling the flashlight with the remote makes me happy)

3rd one was really hard to get into, I didn't find it scary or ...good...frankly. It's the only one I've played so the series is somewhat tainted for me... Hopefully the move to Nintendo hardware for the fourth installment in this japanese horror game can be as successful as the last that was in the same, exact, position.

I hope you all know what I'm talking about.
+ Suda/Grasshopper on this game has me really excited

The whole 'will it work?' meme does come across as an opening for Waggle-bashing, really.

As if the people here need an opening? :)

I don't know of any game where the Wii controller 'won't work'. There are PC games where it would be hard to make any console controller work..but there really isn't enough difference between Wii and traditional controllers to make it 'not work'...it's just 'different'.

Maybe you are referring to software design choices? (Like completely unnecessary motion controls?)

Love the series as well, but I admit I have only played FF2 through once. I'm not die hard, for instance I hear FF1 was really good, so one of these days I need to play through that one.

Looking forward to this one though.

Gah!

The Wii?! I stopped playing fatal frame 2 because Silent Hill 2 came out on the Xbox and it looked so much better.

I agree that this game is scary as hell, but for a game that realize so much on images and visuals to create its horror, I'd have hoped they'd have upped the ante with high res ghosts and school girls.

No, I don't think the pairing will work at all. I mean who wants to have 1:1 control over things like a flashlight or camera view? And Suda 51 having anything to do with a strange horror game? I just can't imagine that working out.

=)

Actually, I don't think there is any way that this could even come remotely close to failing. It's EXACTLY what the Wii was made for. I will be there in day -1.

They ALWAYS do that, not just for Wii games, but pretty much everything that gets posted, unless it's a review. Pay more attention.

Port = Not coming.

I'm sure the assertion that the Wii is perfect for Survival Horror means that we're probably going to be using that remote as a flashlight or a torch or something. Besides, when does it make sense to port a game from the most popular thing since oxygen to a handheld that's taken years and a redesign to begin to build steam?

This is one of the two reasons I wanted a Wii...and that was back when the game was just rumored to be in the works. I'm glad that the screenshots look awesome, after the news that we Wii owners are going to get a more cartoony version of Ghostbusters (not that it's a horrible thing).

BTW, the second reason I wanted a Wii was for SSBB. Not that anyone cares...just mentioned there were two reasons, so...yeah.

Continue!

I just BARELY got into this series when I found a copy of FFII: Director's Cut for the Xbox randomly sitting on a shelf at a local electronics store. It's one of my favorite games I've played recently. I'll definitely be grabbing this as soon as it comes out.

This is exactly the type of game the Wii needs. Something that's dark, not full of minigames, and actually has the potential to use motion controls really well, at least in the puzzle portions of the game.

It's not tech that drives a horror game. It's art direction that happens to utilize tech. The difference is that scares come from talent, not from a minimum polygon count or texture resolution. Look at some of the reviews for Dementium The Ward, a freakin' DS game. Even the publisher of that game went the extra mile to praise the work of the development studio.

As for this game, I noticed the lace on her dress looks like lace. It may seem like a small detail, but how easy was that to do last gen? The Wii has about twice the memory and twice the power of the 6th gen systems.* This is just another indication of what it can do.

*The Wii, according to the leeaked specs (which were largely confirmed by people looking at the insides of the Wii), has the three combined attributes of the 6th gen. The Xbox's speed (with fewer transistors, to keep power low), the PS2's flexibility (the reason its graphics could even come close to those), and the GC's memory management (how Factor 5 could set the 6th gen polygon record on that system).

There were two things that immediately caught my interest: horror game and Suda 51. I'm surprised Nintendo is the publisher. Come to think of it, Eternal Darkness was the only other mature title I think Nintendo has published before.

I haven't played Fatal Frame games, but hopefully this turn out to be a great.

I'm guilty of having not played any of the FF games, after being too much of a Resident Evil fan. It seems I'll have to track them down to collect.

Another cool game coming to Wii. Pretty soon some of those people who sold their Wii's, during drought time, will be picking new ones again, if they can find any to buy.

Glad to see Suda 51 onboard, the guys a star on an Itagaki level. What's also good is that FF is coming to Wii, when certain Konami employees recently said crap about not doing Silent Hill 5 on Wii. Bravo for Tecmo to fill that gap then, as FF deserves more fans, praise and appreciation.

Fatal Frame and Alone in the Dark on Wii, things are looking up.
