Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Good morning, Destructoid. Toast yourself a bagel and have a look at the new extended trailer for Final Fantasy Versus XIII. It's like a blueberry bagel itself, really. Dark and crisp on the outside, but with a subtle promise of rich sweetness should you decide to dig in.

The trailer opens with the phrase "This is a fantasy based on reality." It's interesting to ponder what that could mean, and you can clearly see in the video that the game features cars and buildings that look more like what you'd see outside your window than what you would in a typical Final Fantasy title. Seems deep and intriguing, kind of like this coffee I'm enjoying right now.

If you prefer plain old white toast to the darkness of blueberries, you'll find the new extended trailer for FFXIII proper after the jump. Not quite as unusual as what you see above, but delicious nonetheless. I probably should have finished eating breakfast before I posted these.

[Thanks to JimmyHACK for the tip! Yes, I know it's in the Cblogs, too. Good job there.]

Mmmm, toast.

My guess is that part was actual game footage, what with the bars, numbers and what looked like damage indicators popping up when people we're hit... My guess is that the footage is edited to take things out of context to make things look more dynamic... it starts with a CGI entrance, moves into gameplay, and then ends with CGI... in the game you get the same thing but it doesn't flow as nicely; like lightning makes her entrance, then there is a series of battles, and then there is a cutscene that starts with Lightning finishes off the enemy and continues on with the story from there...

The question is how much does the player control during that bit of gameplay footage... does the player have some control over all the stuff going on there, or is something more like a limit break where it's kind of turn based and all the player does is start the move and let the game handle the rest... we have no way of knowing for sure... the later is more typical of final fantasy and it would be well within their means to make use of such dynamic camera angles while fighting, however the former would be quite awesome and is probably still possible for them to make... afterall, i think games like god of war, assassin's creed and so forth have shown you can to some nice cinematic fighting in real time (imagine Assassin's creed's dynamic kills, but being able to do them back to back or something =P)

So ya... it would be nice to see some gameplay footage without the cinematic trailer work... it is kind of a pain to wait for such things; i mean we had to wait this long just for an extended trailer, how long till we get some actual details!

Looks nice, but turned based RPGs bore the crap out of me, I'm more of a Oblivion, Fable kind of guy. In high school I was addicted to FF though...mostly because of the stories. Working full time and being married, I don't have the patience or time for turned based story driven stuff....I want instant beat down people action like in Halo.

Like the modern direction, looks a little like FFVIII, my personal favorite.

Looks to me they implemented the Gambit system so in the next one, we can just program our characters, sit back, and watch plenty of Gambit Based auto-action.

That's right. Both trailers showed gameplay. Watching is playing.

This is living.

Great, so there's what still virtually no information about the games at all? How can somebody belive that the CG trailer is suddenly gameplay because they overlaid it with a HUD and some damage numbers? Didn't they do this for FFXII as well? I'll wait until Square Enix is ready to actually show me a game and not a Pixar clip.
