Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Good morning, Destructoid. Toast yourself a bagel and have a look at the new extended trailer for Final Fantasy Versus XIII. It's like a blueberry bagel itself, really. Dark and crisp on the outside, but with a subtle promise of rich sweetness should you decide to dig in.

The trailer opens with the phrase "This is a fantasy based on reality." It's interesting to ponder what that could mean, and you can clearly see in the video that the game features cars and buildings that look more like what you'd see outside your window than what you would in a typical Final Fantasy title. Seems deep and intriguing, kind of like this coffee I'm enjoying right now.

If you prefer plain old white toast to the darkness of blueberries, you'll find the new extended trailer for FFXIII proper after the jump. Not quite as unusual as what you see above, but delicious nonetheless. I probably should have finished eating breakfast before I posted these.

[Thanks to JimmyHACK for the tip! Yes, I know it's in the Cblogs, too. Good job there.]

Mmmm, toast.

Why the heck isn't there an HD version of this? And Cloud looks seriously bored.

Impressed! HOWEVER, SONY, bring back 60GB PS3's with Backwards compatibility here in Australia, and we'll talk. You seriously fucked us with that. Sadly not even an FF title can bring me back to you after your raping...

I wonder if there was any second of real gameplay in there...

Sure is pretty though...

@Newsworthy: 80GB is just about the dang same thing. I have about 100 PS2 games and about 30 PSOne games and all but 2 of them play fine on my PS3.

@Zeag: In the girl's battle with those guardss, there is some in-game sequences. Shows us how fast and dynamic battle is, I guess.

Looks pretty cool. I'd say the Versus trailer was infinitely cooler.

@loki_d20: I'm a bit doubtful that thats real gameplay footage, I'd expect that to be just cut outs from after each attack has been started or something, but I'd love to be proven wrong by them.

Not seen any trailers for FFXIII before as I try not to buy into the hype surrounding games too much, but watched this one and am wondering, could it be tied into the Ivalive Alliance in anyway as the guards she was fighting had similar helmets to the dudes in Final Fantasy XII

Fantasy based on reality? Hmm. Yes, they certainly have gone the subtle route with this fantasy.

If they didn't have the moody prettyboy easily wasting scores of cheesy generic soldiers, I probably would have been more drawn in by it. Seriously, why not actually have him fight instead of stand around and throw swords at people with mind control or whatever? Absolute cheesesauce I say.

They both look really good. I hope there's a substantial time difference between the releases for both of them; I don't want to have to buy two games at once, just to neglect one for months. :/

Final Fantasy XIII looks like it could do some nice stuff with the RPG genre, at the very least with the presentation, if not the battle mechanics themselves. However, am I the only one who is more intrigued by FF Versus XIII's setting? The whole "fantasy based on reality" thing looks much more interesting than the cyber-fantasy stuff that's becoming so prominent in JRPGs lately.

I'm honestly much more intrigued by FF vs XIII than FFXIII as well. Lightning doesn't seem all that interesting to me, but the other guy (forgot his name) does.

Plus Yoko Shimmormura is doing the music. Is it sad that I want to play the game based on who the composer is?

With what they are doing with GT5 series, its not hard to imagine that the finished game will look as good if not better than this.

and besides, its SE. they have become as irellevant to be as capcom was until they makde Re4

I think Sora, Riku, and Roxas want their trailer back too.

@Awesome Locks

Its bothering me too. Hopefully, they just did it to attract attention or maybe it is an acronym for something.

It needs to be HD FFXIII trailer tiem, NAO. I do find it doubtful though that the fights shown are real-time, thanks Guerrilla Games for destroying my trust in PS3 trailers.

These trailers came from the Cloud DVD, hence the reason for Cloud at the top.

And Versus XIII looks cool as hell. Looks like Kingdom Hearts without the restrictions of a Disney licence. I'm hoping at this year's jump fiesta that we get in game footage.

Vs. XIII: Crap. Only thing I liked about it was the music. Yeah, it's pretty, but I like things with more than eye candy. Probably why I've totally deserted Final Fantasy since IX (though I felt X had some good qualities).

FF XIII's trailer was all right, but I wonder about the actual gameplay. Maybe a lot of people love the MMORPG-lite battle system XII had, but to this day I think it was a bad idea. Oh well, more power to you if you like FF going with real-time combat (I'm doubting XIII returns to turn-based).

@novakaine, You do realize that FF has been real time since FFIV? ATB, which is real time. FFX was the exception as that was truly turn based.

It seems on fist impressions that its' more important to become like Spirits Within: beautiful and meaningless. There is no offering given to show that there are characters or story worth giving a damn about. SE here is selling their game exclusively on the FF brand, lazy.

As an aside, when EvilCheese writes that we need more Auron, I couldn't agree more.

This is all well and good if they're trying to wow me with "pretty." But when I remember that this is a RPG not an action/adventure it brings me back to Earth. So unless there's new fight prompts that go something like Fight -> Run up futuristic looking building -> Spawn thousands of floating swords -> Impale generic enemy with sword while free falling from building, I'll probably be skeptical till I see some 100% authentic gameplay.

God damn you Square Enix. Despite being a huge Final Fantasy nerd in the past (given that I actually liked X-2), I thought that I may have finally weened myself of Final Fantasy after not bothering to finish XII, but then you go and release these awesome videos. Why, those cutscenes were so... so... wait... cutscenes... ...um, yeah. Okay, never mind. Get back to me when you're showing actual gameplay.

(Though, admittedly, a bit of that in the vanilla XIII video looked like it might have been gameplay, given that there were numbers all over the place at one point, and if so, hot damn. I'ma get me a PS3 when this comes out. Probably. Maybe.)
