New DSi with bigger screen to hit Japan this year photo

For those of you straining your eyes to see the Nintendo DSi's 3.25" screen, Nintendo hears your cries.

According to Japan's Nikkei post, Nintendo will be releasing a Nintendo DSi with a 4" screen in Japan later this year. The functionality, according to the paper, will remain identical to the current DSi... the screen will just be a bigger. The price will also remain the same, at 18900 yen.

No word on if this will completely replace the current 3.25"-screened model, or if the new version will hit retail outside of Japan.

My take: There may be more we don't know about this new model yet, but isn't a bit soon for this? The Nintendo DSi was released in Japan less than one year ago, and earlier this year in North America. I've yet to hear anyone complain about the size of the screen; it's actually .25" bigger than the original DS, which was 3 inches.

What do you think?

OK Nintendo. Stop already. Admit that you've got a good thing and back the fuck up. Slow the fuck down with all these new DSes. Wait 2 years, release the DS2, and be done with it. Oh, and MAKE SOME FUCKING DSI GAMES!

this is bad news for me. just got done replacing the dsi i had stolen. now there's going to be an update with a MUCH bigger screen. just stop already nintendo. why don't you focus on the software side of things for a while? you are not apple, and you can't update your hardware twice a year.

I think every console -portable or otherwise- on the market is suffering from a case of "too many damn SKUs" right now.

I'm guessing this is for the gray gamer market. You know, all the old people who want to play Brain Age but can't see the screen.

Extra inches is always nice, but I'm not buying it. waiting for DS2.

Also clocks.

@WAIW
The real question is 'will this make the clocks uglier'.

I'll bet the only reason they're doing this is to stop homebrew.

Which won't happen.

Bigger is always better. Which is exactly why I can't stand portable games to begin with. I want all games playable on my 42 inch HDTV.

So, if they want to do 4inches, that better, even better? 10 inches? But I won't be happy until it's well into the 30 something range.

But yeah, seriously, screw portable games.

Well, if Nintendo had released the DSi with a 4" screen from the beginning, it would be a much more reasonable update against the Ds Lite. Nowadays, with some news already regarding the DS' sucessor, I just don't know.

But y'know, having a 4" screen would be really nice for people that likes to not-watch videos on their DSes using not-flashcarts...

If it pushes the price down of the regular DSi, then I am all for it!

The DS Lite has been sort-of teasing a lower price through various deals over the past few months (like a $100 lime green/cooking game bundle). Assuming it is released over here at all, this could push the price down on the other two SKUs.

C'mon guys. Nintendo is really financially strained right now. I hope a new DS redesign might be able to move a couple of handhelds. The PSPgo is just so too good a deal for a cheap $250 for the average consumer to pass up.

Nope. Still not interested. Not until we get specs on what this does to battery life.

Also nintendo's really looking to kick their early adopters in the nuts aren't they?

Hah. I hope they announce larger Clock support so I can go buy my clocks in HD.

why do we put up with this shit. if Microsoft of Sony make a new SKU ever year we would freak out: adding a bigger HDD, removing card readers and backwards capability.

@Strife:Sony kind of does. But it is limited to its handhelds. If you stop to think about, there have been 4 PSPs around. The 1000, 2000, 3000 and now the Go. Nintendo now also has 4 versions of the DS. And it sucks exactly the same way. Except you can transfer any non-DSiWare games. But it still sucks.

And I bet that if Microsoft were on the handheld business it would do the same. And actually, it would only work properly without melting some component on the fourth iteration.

As stated previously, fuck this shit. DS2. NOW! And the Wii successor while you're at it.

What do I think? I think I'm pretty happy for not buying a DSi after selling my lite. But I still want to wait a bit more for a DS2, as will a lot of people here. I want a new system, not the same but cosmetically different!

Doesn't it seem silly to use decimals when talking in inches? I mean... in a system that deals in sixths and quarters and other fractions, using decimals seems rather... missing the point doesn't it? Base 12 is much more sensible.

I bet that current DSi becomes the NDSL. I know, GBA slot, but I suspect that either the new version will have GBA or they retire the NDSL.

So have they had 3 models of the portable on sale at the same time?

Sounds like another kick in the balls. I'd rather have a DS2 that has everything this 4 inch DSi has and a hell of a lot more(more powerful, better online features, better touch tech). I still have an original DS.

If true, IMO, this is Nintendo responding to the sales of DSi dipping alongside worrying about the rise of the iPhone. Apple update their iPhone/iTouch models every year, so I think this has Nintendo on edge. Add PSP Go to that equation and DSi may seem to be lacking.

I agree that if this is true, its better to wait for tech specs, however, I too would rather have Nintendo give us a more technically beefed up DS2/GBDS2, on an even footing with iPhone/touch and Zune HD.

Kind of getting sick of these updates, though. I'm lucky I stuck with my DS Lite (I'd love Flipnote on cart though). Come on, Nintendo, stop messing around and give us DS2, and get yourselves back to creating hot games.

This is pretty typical for Nintendo: release a handheld console one year and then release a slightly improved version shortly after so everyone who bought the first version feels like shit for not waiting a little longer and lots of hardcore nintendo fanboys end up buying both versions. The same thing happened with the DS and the DSlite. As if the technology didn't exist to make the screen a few shades brighter in 2004. However, this does seem pretty soon even by Nintendo's standards. The 4" screen does sounds pretty nice, though but like someone said before me, I'm not touching the DSi unless the GBA slot returns. That might give me enough reason to consider trading in my DSlite. It would also be nice if this new DSi had some other new features as well but I'm not holding my breath.

@Phalanxxx - oh absolutely, in base 12, using the duodecimal point, the current size of 3.3" reads sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better ;p

What are you dividing an inch down into anyway? I've seen things measure in eighths of an inch, or thousandths of an inch...

The folks at Nintendo are taking way too many cues from Apple right now.
