New downloadable level revealed for Tomb Raider: Underworld, because it matters photo

Despite the fact that Tomb Raider: Underworld didn't sell nearly as well as Eidos had hoped, that hasn't stopped the publisher from charging ahead with a new downloadable level, exclusive to the Xbox 360. It's called Beneath the Ashes, and it's due out next month.

Beneath the Ashes is set for February 10 and will be one of two DLC levels scheduled for the 360. Lara's Shadow, the second level, will be available on March 10. I'm sure Microsoft are laughing with the hot exclusivity arrangement. Sony is kicking itself.

Full press release is after the jump, and there are a batch of new screens, and by "a batch" I actually mean "two", so check them out. Or not. Probably not.

Thursday 22nd January ... Eidos Interactive Ltd, creator of some of the world’s leading videogame properties, today announced that Tomb Raider: Underworld™ – Beneath the Ashes, the first of two brand new downloadable levels in the continuing Tomb Raider™ adventures of Lara Croft™ will be available 10th February. The second level, Tomb Raider: Underworld™ – Lara’s Shadow, will follow on 10th March. Containing new gameplay levels and content for Tomb Raider: Underworld™, both packs will be available exclusively on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®.

Offering a new adventure specifically designed to extend the Tomb Raider: Underworld™ experience, Tomb Raider: Underworld™ – Beneath the Ashes sends Lara back to the remains of Croft Manor where she uncovers a massive series of never-before-seen caverns and age old crypts used to protect and hide a deadly source of power. The pack will also contain six new costumes and deliver an additional 125 achievement points.

Tomb Raider: Underworld™ seamlessly blends exploration, grand scale puzzle solving and combat, taking players on an archaeological journey to the ancient nether worlds of the Mediterranean, Thailand, Mexico, the Arctic Sea and more. As fearless adventurer Lara Croft, gamers uncover proof of the existence of the Norse underworld and the mythical Hammer of Thor, and embark on a perilous journey towards a forgotten power that, if unleashed, could lay waste to all of civilization. Lara’s latest adventure introduces scores of new capabilities and state-of-the-art gear, including an active sonar map, multi-purpose grapple and an all-terrain motorbike. With fresh moves that are more intuitive and realistic than ever before, players must master these in order to navigate through treacherous environments and defeat a range of hostile enemies.

Xbox LIVE is the largest social entertainment network on TV with more than 17 million members across 26 countries and nine languages. Xbox LIVE is seamlessly integrated throughout the entire console experience, making it easy for users to find the friends, games and entertainment they want from the moment they power on their Xbox 360 system. The online entertainment network offers hundreds of multiplayer games, downloadable games via Xbox LIVE Arcade, free and premium playable game demos, music videos, TV shows and movies, as well as new game levels, characters and vehicles for all their favourite retail games.

Tomb Raider: Underworld™ is rated 16+ and is available now. The game was developed by Crystal Dynamics and is published by Eidos Interactive Ltd and co-published in North America by Eidos Inc. and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Was this exclusivity of downloadable content announced previously? I think it's one thing to announce such plans beforehand in a bid for gamers' attention, like Rockstar did with GTA IV, but if DLC is confirmed to be exclusive after the game has already been released, that does nothing but spite the fans who bought the wrong version, not convince gamers to buy the DLC-exclusive version. Please correct me on this if I'm wrong and I missed some exclusivity announcement from Eidos in the past.

Also, I thought Eidos had confirmed there would be DLC for a while now, separate from any impact of sales, so I doubt a little thing like unimpressive sales would stop them from releasing this.

Since this game is apparently a "flop" by Eidos's standards, Sony probably made the right call not to get in a bidding war with M$ over exclusive DLC. It sucks for anyone who likes the game and has it on PS3, but from a business perspective it looks like Microsoft bet on the wrong horse.

Exclusive DLC is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, especially when you have to pay for it and you know damn well they held this back from the retail release just so they could sell it later. The game was supposed to be twice as long as Anniversary, according to the head developer dude, and strangely enough it wasn't, but lo and behold extra paid-for content magically created in a month from scratch is available, who'd have thought?

Having bought the PC version, I maintain some small hope that I will eventually get this, and I will get it for free. If not, well, that's just another nail in Lara's coffin. I always did want to nail her, but before now it was in an entirely different way...

I like Jim's articles because he doesn't fake enthusiasm for every goddamn little thing that shows up. Some blogs seem like a freaking shopping channel, but not this one.

@cbunn: Hell ya! All hail Destructiod! This site also has way less fanboy trolls than just about any other videogame blog I know about..

It didn't sell as well... maybe, but the DLC here is MUCH less costly than Legend's, which was an entire game.
Regardless, I will always have the new tomb raider in my collection, unless something incredibly terrible happens to it in the future, like it did with Crash Bandicoot.
