New Disgaea 3 screen shots emerge photo

The best game that permits standing-on-shoulders-totem-pole-style attacking, or, as our very own Ron Workman would say, "one of those games with words and numbers," has some lovely new screen shots hitting the internet now.

PS3 strategy RPG Disgaea 3 looks wonderful if you're into that kind of thing. Jim Sterling dug up a nifty trailer, but these high-resolution screenshots from Gamersyde can't be beat for geeking out to.

It's a big strange to see high-res backgrounds and menus against lower-resolution character and enemy sprites, but the game still looks great. There's still plenty of numbers, words, and totem poles to keep Disgaea series and SRPG fans happy.

Japan will see Disgaea in January 2008. We're still waiting for word on an English language version.

Check out the screenshot highlights in the gallery below.

Why would they even bother releasing this on PS3? It takes advantage of nothing the PS3 has to offer technically, and there's still plenty of PS2's out there, so why bother paying the additional cost to develop on Cell? Weird...

there is NO EXCUSE to use low-res sprites anymore

This is laziness pure and simple.

I loved the original, but cmon, the sprites detract immensely from what could be a great game IMO

*sigh* I wish this was just for the PS2... as everyone said, takes no advantage of the PS3 hardware... they really need to upgrade those sprites to, i dunno Odin Sphere quality? But whatever, this is the reason I'm buying a PS3 (that + MGS4 & Littlebigplanet hehe)

Did Sony pay them to have it on PS3 or something? Also Soul Nomad is awesome.

@BottledDark

its sad but i would too...

seriously though i think they are going to release the Disgaea anime on the bluray with this...other than that its a waste of disc space...or it may just be a downloadable title in the same vein as Warhawk and tekken

also i wonder what kind of DLC this game will have..

Ugh, low-res sprites and hi-res backgrounds are super distracting.

Seriously, if they hi-rezzed the whole damn thing, it would probably sell tons more. Sure the hardcore will still buy it, but the current look won't grab any news fans...

It's a shame they haven't gone to the trouble (and I guess the time and expense) of increasing the resolution of the character graphics to match the backgrounds. It does look very odd and offputting - it's like putting a PS1 game into an emulator and being able to increase the resolution of the poly stuff but the bitmaps remaining the same.

Still, SRPG fans will lap it up I'm sure.

Those aren't "hi-res" background either, wtf are you people talking about? They're marginally sharper than the PS2 ones, but they're still the same graphics. The whole thing is still a fucking PS2 game.

Wedge's guess is probably right. Sony probably offered them a nice deal for PS3 publishing over PS2.
Hell, with those looks they wouldn't really need to work hard for optimization anyway.

OK, maybe I should have said it's about time they upgraded the resolution on the sprites to fit in with the backgrounds. 'High-res' or not, there's still a huge and jarring discrepancy between the characters and their environments.

I don't find the sprites disrtacting at all, just disappointing... really when i first heard Disgaea 3 was gonna be on the PS3 i was fuully expecting them to seriously boost the quality with high res sprites, at LEAST to the level of odin sphere to anywhere as high as Street fighter turbo HD remix(though that might be pushing it). Really, Nis could have atleast tried to make it look like a PS3 game... really, this is a lot like the new fire emblem coming out for the wii, which as i heard, was orginally meant for and still could be done for gamecube but was turned into a wii title just for the sake of it... only this is much more obvious

@bottled dark
pheh... if you really were a NIS whore you would buy a PS3 just to have this game... which maybe one of the reasons i myself might eventually breakdown and get a PS3 XD

I'm a big fan of sprite graphics, and the character sprites here do look great... But, Christ, where the hell was the art director on this one? The character sprites may be well made but they still don't match the rest of the game visually, from the backgrounds to the hi-res cels. And when the clear majority here find it worth complaining about, it's not just a matter of art styles or preference, it's an actual problem for the game.

Gah, Nippon Ichi had the perfect opportunity to set the bar for what a next-gen SRPG should look like (they've definitely got the talented artists for it), and yet they didn't. What a shame. :(

Low-res sprites make me cry. If you're using sprites in this day and age (which I totally think people should), you should be making them super high-res fully-animated sprites that blow my mind.

Unless this game has hi-res cutscenes up the wazoo, I see absolutely no reason to bring this to PS3 when a PS2, or even PSP would have been absolutely acceptable. Either ditch the hi-res menus and put it on PS2, or update the sprites and justify it's existence on PS3. I love you NIS, but this is such a boneheaded move...

D3's the only thing that remotely interests me for the PS3 or on the PS3's horizon, so since I'm not made of money, I'm not going to sink a couple of hundred just for this, even being the NIS whore that I am.

I think this game would be great as it is as a PSN downloadable title. I don't want to hear NIS try and pass this off as a full Blu-Ray release, if LittleBigPlanet looks the way it does and it certainly seems at least as awesome as this game, then we sohuld see this visual disgrace of a BD release become a really great PSN release. I don't care if it has a bunch of special features like the anime, this should still be a downloadable title and if they wanna try and make the value up for people, go the dual release route like Warhawk. I doubt many of us complaining here would have such harsh words if this came out for ~ $30 on the PSN.

Yeah, the sprite do look quite odd against the background. Mind you, it's Disgaea, and if they don't fiddle with the gameplay too much, I'm very well likely to get this. Once I have a PS3. Yes.

Here's a thought. Don't be graphics whores. And think of the humongus Item / Class / Spell / Technique database they can get on a Blu-Ray.

There's a difference between being a graphics whore and expecting a reasonable presentation. Those sprites do look decidedly blurry and low-res. Definite room for improvement without too much effort there.

Also, "up the wazoo" is a term not coined nearly enough.
