New Diablo III screens get their just deserts! photo

Brilliant headline!

More importantly, here are some screens for what promises to be a brilliant game. Blizzard's Diablo III has been pretty quiet lately, but a batch of fresh new screens has been dumped on the Internet's doorstep, showing off the game's desert environment.

These screens will have to tide you over, because there's still no word on this game arriving before 2011. A huge wait, most probably worth it but definitely agonizing. At least that gives you all plenty of time to play Torchlight while you're tapping your feet. Go on, go do that!

Diablo II was a fucking masterpiece. Those screens just gave me a nerdgasm.

With the lack of multiplayer, torchlight is not really an alternative form me. But as soon as there is some kind of patch, mod or something, i will definitely pick it up.

Think I can survice the wait now that I have borderlands to play with.

I don't concern myself with all that Starcraft nonsense. Diablo 3, however, is my heart's desire.

I can't talk about the quality of Diablo series because I'm not a PC player until 2007. But I appreciate the idea of not run to launch the game. Ensures that it is well polished and makes the sequels more relevant.

I read that as "just desserts" even though it says "deserts." I was hoping there was going to be a level where you fight demons and other monsters on top of a giant cake.

Whenever it arrives, I hope it has the same longevity as Diablo II. There isn't another game where the longest I go without playing is about a month. It's still the game I play most with friends and siblings online. I'll take a Mephisto/Diablo/Baal run any day over Borderlands.

I haven't played D2 since about 1.08 (which was like a decade ago), but my little bro still does a few dozen Baal runs every night. Watching him play is like watching a new game; Blizzard added so much with every patch it amazes me. I just hope the same thing happens with D3 (read: non-paid DLC).

I really don't get why everyone loves Diablo so much. The gameplay is so incredibly shallow. The only real gameplay mechanic is left-clicking. All you ever do is left-click things, occasionally right-click, and then collect loot and gear for the sole purpose of making your left-clicking prettier and more effective. I tried playing II, and I couldn't take it anymore, even when playing with friends. That's probably why I like Borderlands so much; it took the addictive Diablo formula and gave it GAMEPLAY.

@leviticus: but its in the constant, rhythmic clicking that I can find peace, tranquility, and the see the face of the one true God.

Borderlands, while enjoyable, did not offer me this temporary Nirvana.

Read your books kid. You're obviously too young to get it...

And the AI in borderlands is about as boring as hell. I love how they will always stand 30 feet away, loosely behind cover, and sit there and shoot infinitely in the same spot. No tactics, no teamwork, same shit over and over and over. And can I please have more than 6 types of enemies?

As excited as I am about Diablo 3, it's a bit depressing to see an uninspiring set of screenies from a desert, featuring your typical horde of skeletons.

I think Diablo 2 has a "you had to be there" factor. I never played it years back when it was new. I bought it a few months ago after hearing all the love for it, and just could not get into it. I played Torchlight a bit and grew sick of that as well after maybe 15 hours of play total. I sort of get the appeal, but it just gets boring after a while.

That said, I'll probably try D3 when it finally comes out, because I'm a sucker for the fantasy genre.

Not that I won't buy this game, but it really sort of looks like they just took Diablo 2 screens and softened them, I don't know how else to describe it.

I'm looking forward to D3, despite my primal fear of online play. A part of me wants to know how easily moddable it'll be, since I have a lot more playtime and enjoyment with modded games as opposed to vanilla D2, and I want to know computer specs too. Torchlight is probably the most recent game to come out that runs damn-near flawlessly on my laptop, and I rather like that, though by the time D3 comes out, I may actually have a computer that can handle it and more...

To those that don't get the appeal of Diablo games. I think it's the simpleness and the fact that it's (at least for me) nearly infinitely re-playable. You can play the game with as little as just two buttons if you choose and yet it manages to stay frantic and fast paced. Also due to loot and environments being randomly generated, the moment you step out of town it's time to explore since you never have a chance to learn where things are.

Think of it like this. In a game like WoW for example, everyone learns what loot drops where so they just do that over and over until they get what they want, that's boring. And in a game like Borderlands, you step out of town on your 3rd or 4th play through and...everything is the same, you know where to go and where things are, this is also boring. Diablo games aren't perfect in these respects but at least it manages to stay fresh even years after release because you always have to explore and it's the surprise of loot drops that gets you places.

Blizzard needs to hurry shit up or else a Torchlight sequel will ride in and impale Diablo III on a glistening unicorn horn. Gameplay videos have been out for awhile now and D3 still doesn't have a release date.

I got the joke. I was saying that when I first read it I didn't notice the pun, because I read it as "desserts" instead of "deserts." Then, after I read the rest of the post, I realized that it said "deserts" and that you were making a pun.

"I think you overestimate the intelligence of your average reader."

He obviously doesn't, since he read what I said and assumed that I had no idea that it was a joke.

I think that while Diablo 3's graphics will probably be dated by the time it comes out (just like the 2nd one), it WILL feature legendary gameplay once more, and I look forward to sinking play hours into that one. :)

Its kinda underwhelming, Titan Quest pretty much still looks better than most D3 screens. Then again, Titan Quest had some of the best textures i've ever seen in a hack n slash (look at the egypt section, the interior walls and pillars with hieroglyphs, fucking spectacular.).

Yeah.. I REALLY loved Titan Quest :)
Diablo 3 is gonna be the bee's knees thats for sure. Too many mediocre german hack n slash games, not enough quality ones like Diablo, TQ, etc.

@KrazyKraut: That's not the way your eyes work. Stare at bright yellow too long, and everything else looks blue.

Also, @Nitex: What exactly are the graphical differences between these screenshots and Act 2 of Diablo 2? To my eyes, they look awfully similar; the screenshots just have a bit more texture and seem a bit less pixellated.

Blizzard said they would release two titles this year, this means StarCraft II and WoW expansion Cataclysm. They also said that Diablo III won't be out before StarCraft II so you do the math.

StarCraft II was announced in 2007, comes out 2010 (or else I will kill myself slowly and painfully). Diablo III was announced in 2008 comes out in 2011... this all makes very much sense, because Blizzard are bastards that take too long releasing games, but you can't blame them when they make such wonderful games.

And to all of you out there who say that WoW is bad (fine, you can have your opinion) there are 11 million other people out there to prove you wrong...

I absolutely loved both Diablo 1 and 2. I remember playing D2LOD back in mid '01.... I kinda played it non-stop for 2 or 3 years. It was my first online game. blah blah blah blah........

Was it October '08 that D3 was announced? I think so... Anyways, when i heard the news, i totally flipped out. MY game had a sequel coming. MY GAME HAD A FREAKIN' SEQUEL COMING! I wasn't in love with the new style but i kinda dug it. After the last BlizzCon, i was broken-hearted to see that this awesome game looked like it had been dragged through a squishy field of dragonball z. So many colors, flashing lights. etc..... My gritty game is dead. I don't think I'll be purchasing Geometry Wars 3.... errr.. Diablo 3.
