The crew over on
FileFront pointed our attention over to this
new develop diary on
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. The developers talk about the important characters in the game, background on the Secret Apprentice, and how this game fits into the Star Wars timeline. It's interesting to hear that the Secret Apprentice is basically what Luke
Skywalker would have become had he joined Vader.
Among the interviews with the actor and developers, we're also shown some snippets of
gameplay footage. It's not much, but it's looking good. George Lucas also had a hand in the story line so for you Star Wars fanboys out there, you can rest assured that it will be good.
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I don't want guns. No more blasters, no more thermal detonators, no more fucking Bowcaster. I want to wreck shit sideways with Force powers.
"Everybody dies."
Everybody?
EVERYBODY.
Also, this could use more flamethrowers.
Anyway, not a big fan of Star Wars at all, but I am really interested in this game. Extended universe shit is very interesting.
Basically, Lucas - in my opinion - laid the groundwork for some very interesting CHARACTERS, and the universe itself as a stage, but his writing and storytelling ARE quite average, if you REALLY watch the movies (the original trilogy). In fact, all of my interest in the original Star Wars trilogy came entirely off the strength of the talented writers who expanded on Lucas' groundwork. And repeatedly, Lucas has done shit to totally undermine them. Is it HIS franchise to butcher if he wishes? Sure - but in my opinion, it makes him a very weak writer AND businessman if he doesn't understand just how much the people who have elaborated on his original idea have helped the Star Wars franchise.
This game still looks pretty rad though.
I couldn't agree more. I didn't realize that this game had this much potential. I love the ILM face acting stuff, and the destruction just looks awesome. Is this coming out for PC? Please say it is. The website only mentions X360, PlayStation, and (of all things) the DS.
I'm a Star Wars fiend so I'm gonna be getting this anyway. I'd love to stab someone in the face with the Force.
(wets his Ewok sheets)
Han Solo is a typical wisecracking rogue, Luke is a whiny bitch who becomes a Jedi with zero personality. Leia's character has been done as far back as monochrome movies.
Any characters that people latch onto, like Boba Fett, have only been made as good through other people writing for them in books and comics. In fact, once George Lucas got his filthy hands on Boba Fett for Attack of the Clones, he went right ahead and introduced Jango, said he was a clone and shit over all the hard work people had done in making Fett a mysterious but awesome character.
I have never before claimed that a person doesn't understand their own creation, but since Lucas let so many people improve his franchise, then systematically undermined all their hard work, I have to say that he does not understand his own creation.
Oh, and Darth Vader stopped being a badass and turned to the fagside when he screamed "Nooooooo" in Revenge...
that was so ghey.
Flawed argument is flawed. They can't fit every goddamn thing in the movies. And you can't trust Lucas to write anything good, these days. The extended universe has added more to the mythos than Lucas has, since the first three films.
And Jim is mostly right. Star Wars is a very simplistic story. All the characters are fairly simple types. However, with the original trilogy, the actors and the heart behind the story made it work. The first three are, for lack of a "cooler" word, delightful. Lucas couldn't duplicate it with the prequels, even though he was using a very similar forumula, because his actors didn't know what to do with the material and Lucas is an out-of-touch twit who can't write anymore. "Comic sidekick"? Ugh, die.
Anyway, this game looks great. The story sounds much more believable than I thought it would, and we could have a great cross between Jedi Outcast and KOTOR here.
As far as Lucas goes, yup he did take existing ideas and spun them in a sci-fi universe. While the story type is not anything new, even when they were first released, the way the movies looked and the action they had in them was something completly new. My uncle still tells me stories when he saw the first Star Wars, it was the first time he remembers saying "woah" during a movie. The movies we have now have the origional triology to thank for much of the technology used to create them. But that seems to be Lucas' thing, overwhelm the auidence with new technology and prettier looking effects while recycling the same story and characters that others have used for centuries.
