New details emerge on Punch-Out for Wii photo

We haven't heard a whole lot about the upcoming release of Punch-Out for the Wii, other than it's going to release in May and have a rating of "E 10+." Why Nintendo has kept so quiet about a game that has the potential to satisfy a lot of the detractors amongst the hardcore Nintendo fans who miss their old games is baffling, but they've finally conceded to offer up a little more info by way of a fact sheet that GoNintendo has posted.

There's a little bit of info on the characters who will be appearing, referred to as the "best of the original Punch-Out! cast" and confirming the appearance of Von Kaiser. "Star Punches" will be returning as well, though we still don't know if they'll be acquired in the same fashion as before.

Most important, however, is confirmation that Punch-Out! will have two control schemes available to players. The obligatory motion controls in nearly every Nintendo-developed game for the console will be here but they've also deigned to include classic, NES-style controls. Yup, just flip the Wii Remote on its side and play the game the way God intended.

Thank you, Nintendo. Punch-Out! is the game I play on my NES more than any other. I was wary of the update at first, but the news of this control system has put all of that to bed.

This is now a day-one purchase for me. How about the rest of you?

THANK THE SWEET LORD DOC LOUIS!

I was really afraid that horrible motion controls would turn this game in to a cry-fest for me. I am so happy that I'm renewing my membership with the Nintendo Fun Club today!

The details on the motion controls are actually sort of disturbing. They sound sort of awful.

I was really hoping for balance board support, and extremely basic but responsive, non-one-to-one motion controls.

Hopefully I'll still get that. If not, I'll just NES it, which will be fun as well.

Multiple control schemes are always welcome. I kind of hate Wii Sports Boxing, since I usually end up futilely flailing my arms about, with about the same success rate as if when I try (which isn't much success), so at least I know I'll be able to play this.

Any worries I had about this game are put to rest. Someone, some one person in Nintendo, is thinking about us.

If it has the Punch Out! theme, I'll be ecstatic.

NES controls when I just want to sit down and play and motion controls for when I'm drunk and feel like looking like a twat, all wii games should be like this.

Nice one, Nintendo!

Mr. Destructoid should allow me to win a Wii from him so I can play this game.

Hey, I think it's a good idea. I'm sure he'd agree!

OMFG NO waggle controls. Holy shit!

Guys, if you're interested, try here in anticipation for the amazingness that is Punch Out!! Wii. I'm pretty sure they'll work on standard games.

Those motion controls do sound terrible. I'm pissed. Wii Boxing was a ton of fun. The controls weren't pitch perfect solid, but if you actually worked to get the hang of it bobbing and weaving and pulling off combos and hooks was a blast (and the only game on WiiSports that actually got my heart rate up). I was so looking forward to a more refined boxing experience with this game but instead it sounds like they actually downgraded from WiiSports.

NES-style controls? Well, well! Maybe they're not completely off their goddamned rocker, after all!

It's a step in the right direction--all that's left is whether the thing's actually any fun.

"Why Nintendo has kept so quiet about a game that has the potential to satisfy a lot of the detractors amongst the hardcore Nintendo fans who miss their old games is baffling"

It's not baffling at all. It's Nintendo's stated strategy.

Having the option for traditional control is very good news.

There's nothing wrong with having more options especially in terms of controls. At least Nintendo was smart enough to include NES-style controls.

I'm also a fan of the original punch-out as well as Super Punch-Out.

I must admit that I am a bit concerned about the use of motion controls for the Wii title.Wii Sports Boxing is pretty fun and the controls work pretty well. I particularly love the ability to dodge via motion control which was a nice touch Nintendo included. Still, the controls weren't always responsive so I wonder why this game is not a perfect candidate in Nintendo's eyes for MotionPlus support. What's the harm in allowing for even more responsive and precise motion controls in a fairly fast-paced game like Punch-Out that requires skill and timing for attacking, blocking and dodging despite having a simple control scheme.

Here's hoping Punch-Out on Wii will be a fun and worthy title in the franchise.

This news makes me very happy. Nintendo-developed Wii games usually have great motion controls (except Twilight Princess, which is more of a Gamecube game) so the motion controls could be awesome, or they could be iffy like Wii Sports Boxing. I'm glad they included the NES controls because they are perfect, although it makes me wonder why they would include them if the motion controls are (at least they should be) integral to the game. If the Wii controls are great, what is the point of NES controls? Fan service perhaps?

I am not kicking the waggle trolling but I don't think the Wii controls are that great, the addition of NES controls are something that as much old and new fans could enjoy thoroughly.

Fan service? I can't say it isn't.

All signs point to this being just a simple remake of the original (which really doesn't even NEED an update) for the sake of raking in the dough on nostalgic Nintendo-philes.

In fact, this is probably the only reasons Super Punch Out isn't on the virtual console. They knew this was in the pipeline and thhey don't want people to get their fix of it before it comes out.

Lame.

I thought a Punch-Out game for the Wii would raise the bar on motion controls. This game sounds more like it will cash in on nostalgia than on creating something new and exciting.

Not to knock your opinion, but it certainly highlights the damned if you do, damned if you don't pickle that Nintendo sits in with its "Revolution" in gaming. Either they do new things at a risk of being brilliant or lame, or they go with what works, which wasn't broken but isn't new.

Splitting control schemes for this one is a pretty savvy move, I think. Punch Out, really, wasn't so much about boxing simulation, but more about boxing based strategy.

@ Monodi

I agree that the waggle controls aren't so great all the time, but certain (mainly Nintendo-developed) games have had really good controls. Wii Sports Super Mario Galaxy, Zack and Wiki, and Metroid Prime 3 among other games have had great controls in my opinion. However, these games are not waggle-fests, they are more precise in their motions (unlike most Wii games).

And of course it the NES controls are there for fan service, which makes me happy :)

@ArrestedDeveloper: That's totally fine. I just want it to live up to my memory of Punch-Out from this past weekend.

Which is actually pretty much the same as my childhood memory, except I'm not playing the game in the living room of my aunt's house.

Sounds like this game should be downloadable Wiiware. If it's not gonna support MotionPlus then it's the same thing as Wii Sports Boxing, and if you turn the controller sideways then you might as well just play the original; aside from newer graphics, I don't understand the point of this remake.

Thank god. Wii Boxing is a chore to play: see how fast you can flail around like a fool! I was dreading that they were going to take a classic, "I still play it to this day" game and rape it with the boxing game's controls.

Now it's on my first-day buy list.

Beating Mike Tyson for the first time still stands as one of my proudest hardcore gamer moments, more than twenty years removed.

I hope this game can deliver at least a shadow of the former's greatness. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

If you flail wildly in 'Wii Sports Boxing' (and you are not drunk/doing it for lulz) then you are doing it wrong. There is quite a bit of depth in the game, especially as the CPU gets harder.

In fact, golf and baseball are the only ones that I find that lack depth.

Tip for wii sports boxing

Punch using short jabs, the wii motion sensor is better at picking these up plus you will use a little less energy and feel less tired. Probably look less like a spastic too ;).

The side jabs and upper cut are still hard to pull off, but they are powerful if you can do them.

Anyway I welcome the old style controles sometimes you don't really want to put in alot of physical effort into a game but at the same time I the motion controles will probably easier (and a bit of a laugh) for non gamers.
