We haven't heard a whole lot about the upcoming release of Punch-Out for the Wii, other than it's going to release in May and have a rating of "E 10+." Why Nintendo has kept so quiet about a game that has the potential to satisfy a lot of the detractors amongst the hardcore Nintendo fans who miss their old games is baffling, but they've finally conceded to offer up a little more info by way of a fact sheet that GoNintendo has posted.
There's a little bit of info on the characters who will be appearing, referred to as the "best of the original Punch-Out! cast" and confirming the appearance of Von Kaiser. "Star Punches" will be returning as well, though we still don't know if they'll be acquired in the same fashion as before.
Most important, however, is confirmation that Punch-Out! will have two control schemes available to players. The obligatory motion controls in nearly every Nintendo-developed game for the console will be here but they've also deigned to include classic, NES-style controls. Yup, just flip the Wii Remote on its side and play the game the way God intended.
Thank you, Nintendo. Punch-Out! is the game I play on my NES more than any other. I was wary of the update at first, but the news of this control system has put all of that to bed.
This is now a day-one purchase for me. How about the rest of you?

I was really afraid that horrible motion controls would turn this game in to a cry-fest for me. I am so happy that I'm renewing my membership with the Nintendo Fun Club today!
I was really hoping for balance board support, and extremely basic but responsive, non-one-to-one motion controls.
Hopefully I'll still get that. If not, I'll just NES it, which will be fun as well.
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallelujah!
Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!
Halleeeeeeeeelujah!
Any worries I had about this game are put to rest. Someone, some one person in Nintendo, is thinking about us.
Day One Buy indeed.
Nice one, Nintendo!
Hey, I think it's a good idea. I'm sure he'd agree!
Guys, if you're interested, try here in anticipation for the amazingness that is Punch Out!! Wii. I'm pretty sure they'll work on standard games.

It's a step in the right direction--all that's left is whether the thing's actually any fun.
It's not baffling at all. It's Nintendo's stated strategy.
I'm also a fan of the original punch-out as well as Super Punch-Out.
I must admit that I am a bit concerned about the use of motion controls for the Wii title.Wii Sports Boxing is pretty fun and the controls work pretty well. I particularly love the ability to dodge via motion control which was a nice touch Nintendo included. Still, the controls weren't always responsive so I wonder why this game is not a perfect candidate in Nintendo's eyes for MotionPlus support. What's the harm in allowing for even more responsive and precise motion controls in a fairly fast-paced game like Punch-Out that requires skill and timing for attacking, blocking and dodging despite having a simple control scheme.
Here's hoping Punch-Out on Wii will be a fun and worthy title in the franchise.
I am not kicking the waggle trolling but I don't think the Wii controls are that great, the addition of NES controls are something that as much old and new fans could enjoy thoroughly.
Fan service? I can't say it isn't.
In fact, this is probably the only reasons Super Punch Out isn't on the virtual console. They knew this was in the pipeline and thhey don't want people to get their fix of it before it comes out.
Lame.
Not to knock your opinion, but it certainly highlights the damned if you do, damned if you don't pickle that Nintendo sits in with its "Revolution" in gaming. Either they do new things at a risk of being brilliant or lame, or they go with what works, which wasn't broken but isn't new.
Splitting control schemes for this one is a pretty savvy move, I think. Punch Out, really, wasn't so much about boxing simulation, but more about boxing based strategy.
TAKE IT BACK! I just realized that all the unveiled characters are just the first few from Punch Out!! 1. Oh God what have you done?!
I agree that the waggle controls aren't so great all the time, but certain (mainly Nintendo-developed) games have had really good controls. Wii Sports Super Mario Galaxy, Zack and Wiki, and Metroid Prime 3 among other games have had great controls in my opinion. However, these games are not waggle-fests, they are more precise in their motions (unlike most Wii games).
And of course it the NES controls are there for fan service, which makes me happy :)
holy. Fucking. Shit. YES
Which is actually pretty much the same as my childhood memory, except I'm not playing the game in the living room of my aunt's house.
If the controls ain't broke then don't try to fix them.
mario galaxy , brawl , and now punch out they all dont use waggle or is optional.
only use waggle when it makes sence.
because its awesome
Now it's on my first-day buy list.
I'll still wait for reviews, though.
This news is fantastic!
I hope this game can deliver at least a shadow of the former's greatness. Can't wait to get my hands on it.
In fact, golf and baseball are the only ones that I find that lack depth.
Greatest news I've heard all got damn day!
Nintendo giving the player options! Wow!
Nice change... Thank you, Nintendo!
Punch using short jabs, the wii motion sensor is better at picking these up plus you will use a little less energy and feel less tired. Probably look less like a spastic too ;).
The side jabs and upper cut are still hard to pull off, but they are powerful if you can do them.
Anyway I welcome the old style controles sometimes you don't really want to put in alot of physical effort into a game but at the same time I the motion controles will probably easier (and a bit of a laugh) for non gamers.
I'll surely have a blast with Punch Out Wii especially with its awesome control schemes.
